i played with american sticks all my life. i loved the concave buttons and the bat top stick. that all changed the first time i used a hori. i have never been able to cancel moves the way i can with my hori real arcade pro with sanwa buttons. i can roll cancel(sort of) and hit my dp 100%, somethig i could never claim with an american stick. now, i’m a total scrub, no skill what-so-ever, but the timing and precision of the japanese stick has improved my game totally. try em both out to figure out what feels right.
japanese sticks are faster because they have no resistance AND takes very little effort to do motions. You barely have to tap it, where it’s the same with american sticks BUT even after the cherry clicks you can still move the stick a bit more. Bleh sorry for a crappy explanation but some may know what i’m talking about.
It’s just way easier to pull out a neutral 720 on a jpn than an american one.
So the final conclusion is that if you start playing on a Japenese stick you wont have any problems, they are only hard for people who started on American sticks. Correct?
Love 'em like driving wheels, the tighter the better. Years of playing red mvs arcade got me used to them.
TDC’s right about 720 though, but luckily I don’t play the grapplers
i wouldn’t agree with this statement. i started on american and going to japanese was like a natural progression, i had mastered the ‘training wheels’ part of using a stick, now aboslute timing became more critical. i still sometimes accidentally brush over the HK when trying to hit HP, its that sensitive. if anyone here is into bowling, i have a total redneck analogy. when people start bowling, usually they drill the holes in their ball to fit their entire fingers, but the more advanced you get, you push toward holes that only fit your fingertips cuz it goives you more play and control of the spin. thats how american vs japanese is. when you start off playing games, you probably won’t exploit the differences, but as your game improves, you need higher quality and more sensitivity.
jap stick with a bat top = best of both worlds… though the “leeway”(as stated earlier) of an american stick is nice to have in the vs series… namely mvc2.
Us, J-style…Who cares.
I play just fine on any stick so long as it works…& does not have any sharp corners.
I prefer japanese stick. They’re more responsive.
I use a japanese stick at home to practice and a 360 in arcade.
Then I was forced to use Japanese style for a little over a month because my arcade didn’t have CvS2 for a little over a month. Now I have a hard time on 360 because I used Sanwa for so long without using the 360 every other week.
It all comes down to personal preference.
Ask DF for a japanese stick. He pretty much makes the best sticks here besides Darkside, but Darkside’s more of a limited edition art piece sort of deal.
Cool thanks everyone. Now to actually get good at this game.
