Well, translation is a different skill from language, but it’s not unrelated and you still get exposed to new vocab in context that you’re interested in. Though it’s really only viable practice for intermediate and above learners
That reminds me, get a voice to translate app. I use a free one called VoiceTranslator which is not too bad. Then you can speak phrases into your phone and roughly get back what they said. Useful if you’re watching a movie or a TV show and a character says a phrase you don’t understand. Goes without saying that subtitles are often lazy as hell and not worth taking as gospel.

dawg i was studying this year from like text books. I had about half of Hiragana down and got lazy. My best bet would be to study at home in terms of wirting, no diff than learning the alphabet. But for speaking obviously you’d need something like a audio teaching, or etc. It would help to find a penpal or something you can skype with.
And idk if you like anime, but watching that subbed, and/or listening to Japanese music, can help alot in adjusting your ears to the language, even though of course someone rapping or isnging isn’t the same as like them talking to another person lol
Its not uncommon for Japanese singers and rappers to chop entire chunks of words out, in order to compress things to fit in their songs, so be wary of that. Mad Capsule Markets spring to mind.
Yeah early on don’t use it to learn grammar necessarily, just listen with the intent to be hearing the language. That alone is incredibly valuable
