JAPAN THREAD 2007 (Konnichiwa B!tches!)

Nah, you need one of those two in order to get a prepaid phone. The only places that sell prepaid phones to tourists are the places in the airport. Just a little tip if you ever come back to Tokyo again. You may want to try actually going back to the airport too but I don’t know how much of a hassle that’ll be for you.

Faight, I’m up for 3S action, I just have no idea where Ikebukuro is.
I live over in Atsugi, kind of near Tokyo.

Actually, for that matter, if anyone is up for 3S action, I’m down. The only arcade i’ve been to is in Edina(think thats the place), a couple train stops away. And they only had one 3S machine, to which I had to play the computer. Still felt good to play the game again though.

I merged the Tokyo thread with the “Arcades in Tokyo” thread since I posted a list of good arcades in the Tokyo area. Hope it’s useful.:wonder:

Yo’ fight it was good to met up yesterday. Sorry if I drug you around Westside Tokyo too much. Club Sega had a desent selection but I just cant believe that no one was playing Tekken yesterday! The gamecenter in Shibuya is the cheapest gamecenter in that area, it’s close to the GAS PANIC bar, and that place is good for the eyes. Try to hit that bar up on Thursday night it should be pretty packed.

Next time we go there… We will have to go back to TGIF cause I gotta meet that bartender. Sarah said Thank for last night too and I’ll ask her to find out some more info on a phone.

Man, don’t hit up Gaspanic lol that place is such a dive compared to the other places around the area. You oughta go to Vanilla, Muse or Yellow in Roppongi, or if you’re adamant about staying in Shibuya, hit up Womb or Xanadu. Both clubs are close to Love Hotel Hill. Those are probably the best places to go clubbing in the Shibuya/Roppongi area.

Yes, the game center up from Gas Panic. I am none of Alan, Leslie, or Kyle. I’m a Dave. I’m pretty rusty but usually play Zangief or THawk, and pretty much only play SSF2T.

Someone else mentioned Gas Panic. Man, if you are looking for skanks I guess that place is ok, but that is not where you go for atmosphere, music, or hot chicks.

If someone wants to organize a day to meet up drop me an email: fugu at fugutabetai dot com.

I’d like to organize a get together. I’m pretty lost in this city. Spent a lot of today at Shibuya Game Kaikan trying to play games. Do Japanese people just have a superiority complex? I played like 3-4 games of Arcana Heart against this one guy and despite the fact that I’ve only played for maybe a week and can barely combo, he never let up. I think he perfected me about 3 times (matches were 3 out of 5) in the entire set, and when I did hit him I couldn’t do anything beyond the most basic combo. I finally started figuring out how the Homing Cancels work in the game towards the evening, but I still can barely do anything in the game.

So like, you demolish someone 4+ fights in a row, and instead of easing off on a fight you know you’re going to win you play harder? I’m seriously confused. Also, it’s really hard to practice anything in an arcade here. I showed up there before lunch and the place was already packed and it’s a Wednesday. I was just trying to learn the game and it ended up with me feeling like I never want to play it again (though I know I will) due to getting stomped as hard as I did.

Anywho, I’m extending my stay in Tokyo until Monday. After that I’m heading to Osaka. If you guys want to do anything let me know. I don’t have a cell over here but you can contact me on AIM or MSN, or on here.

I don’t know about a superiority complex, but I think they play games to win here. The way I look at it is that if you go up against the best every day, you are forced to get better. If people go easy on you, what are you really learning? How to win when someone is just screwing around with you?

I would also say that it would be rude from the Japanese mindset to “go easy” on you - the person on the receiving end would think that they are not being respected, so perhaps that is even worse than just getting beat down.

I like the way they do it in Japan myself.

I look at it more like trying to cultivate competition; if someone can’t get any sort of learning out of a fight why bother playing? If you’re not even going to get a chance to hit your opponent because they’re that much better than you. I’m not talking about letting someone win or throwing a fight, I’m talking about maybe not doing that full Lilica loop in the corner for 50%+ damage and then setting up an unblockable using arcana and those neato specific ground moves that can’t be airblocked, the ensuing combo which kills your opponent. As much as I appreciate the fact that I’m being treated like a worthy opponent I kind of know I’m not. And if it’s some matter of ‘honor’ or ‘respect’ then I guess that’s that. I’ll continue to feed their win streak while learning nothing about the game because I never get a chance to do anything other than be a punching bag.

I guess not knowing how to play the game at all kind of puts a damper on my enjoyment of playing the game. That and I can’t for the life of me EVER find a vacant machine to practice on. Usually within the first match I play someone shows up. I’ve gone at all times of day, from 10am to midnight (not in the same day) and there is ALWAYS someone there. While normally I get super stoked about playing other people in games, it makes it really hard to learn this new system for me. I wish people would play CvS2 with this amount of gusto; I’ve played maybe 3 matches against another living person despite having spent several hours playing against the computer. At least I can usually find a good match for SF2 though, and that makes me happy. However for this game I’d like to get some time against an opponent who doesn’t really fight back (read: the computer since either the AI is horrible or every place has it crazy turned down) so I can figure out how this combo system works. After a week of playing against other people who have it down pat I’m finally beginning to understand how it works (reading is one thing, experiencing is another) and how to use it.

I dunno, I can see it from the opposing point of view. I understand that people want to fight stronger opponents for the challenge and to improve themselves. I’ve been on the other end and it’s something you don’t really notice. I can’t count the number of times I’ve wiped the floor with someone and never really cared that they were new to the game. However, after a few matches I try to ease off and let them learn a little bit. Maybe I’m too nice?

No, that can’t be it. My biggest handicap has to be the most obvious thing: I’m white. It’s scientifically proven (by scientists) that white people aren’t as good at fighting games as other races.

The tl;dr version: If I knew how to play the game I wouldn’t care. I’d prefer it if they went all out. However I don’t, and it makes learning it very frustrating.

i live in nagano right now, got some decent competition. if i take some time off and head to tokyo (shibuya kaikan), what are the best days of the week to go for CVS2 competition. unfortunately that’s the only game i can sorta hold my own at, and i hear that arcade has the best competition/players. are there regular tournaments? if not, should i just hit it up some weekend? (fri/sat/sun)? thanks for any help!

Hey guys. I’m planning on going to Japan in May.

Which is a good arcade for MvC2/CvS2 competition? And also can you post up directions from the closest train station.

From what I’ve read of the thread, alpha station, Shibuya game Kaikan, and Club Sega (akiharbara/shinjuku/ikebukero) are my best bets?

Yeah, Friday/Sat/Sun are the best times to go since everyone will be out playing. Basically if you go during the evening you’ll find competition.

Shanghai Kid: Shibuya Kaikan is a good place, although I’m not too sure if there’s any other places that are good… 2D seems to be dying off if you’re only into Capcom games. There are a couple of good arcades in Akihabara other than Club Sega (Hirose, and another one behind Messe Sanoh) that have good 2D comp but for Capcom games I think Shibuya is your best bet.

P.S. Gonna change this into the Japan thread instead of Tokyo… the Jap-o-philes need to stick together. :stuck_out_tongue:

I gotta go my twice a month burger in shibuya…if anyone want to play some games… I’ll be in Shibuya Kaikan around 7pm today…

all the gaspanics are garbage. as mentioned above, the love hotel hill area is the best place for clubbing, no doubt. i asked earlier in the thread if any of u guys liked clubbing cuz im basically living here in tokyo as a DJ. ill drop some promo if u guys are interested.

on an mvc2 note, i checked out alpha station in shin okubo again and they have 3 head-to-head cabs up on the third floor. and the comp is nasty… dont fuck with japanese IM’s. im up in shibuya almost daily but i tend to blend in, haha… if u see a chinese guy getting owned with the yellow makoto, say wussup…

so my family and i are going on a tour in japan over the next 4 or 5 days… we’ll be going through osaka, kobe, kishu, uji, and kyoto… and i really don’t know a whole lot about japan or what those areas are like, so i’ll just ask: where can i play 3rd strike in those places?

At any arcade. They should be fairly plentiful, just walk around. Do not be confused with Pachinko parlors, which might at first look like arcades, but instead are a very boring gambling type institution where you try to make balls fall not in a Poisson distribution.

Does anyone know when and where SBO is taking place cuz im looking to around that time??

i might be running around akihabara this coming saturday. pm me if you wanna meet up and accelerate death with second-hand smoke.

What station in Saitama do you live near?

Thanks for the info guys.

Looks like it’s Shibuya Kaikan and Alpha station if I want CvS2/MvC2 action.

Can someone post directions to Shibuya Kaikan? I think the Alpha station directions were already posted.
