"It's a good day to die!" T. Hawk Match-up/Strategy Thread

Ugh, played some more matches.

Sim:
Sim’s knee pwns the dive. If I space properly to neutral jump into a crossup dive, I’ll get hit with footsies in the air. Only way to get in is a random TB when he sticks his limbs out. This is an anticipation game. Seems hopeless when you are getting zoned properly. However, once you get in (hard part) and mix up, Sim is done.

Gouken:
Another guessing game. If Gouken decides to high/low fireball spam, prepare to have the time run out on every match. Absorb fireballs to get in and hope he doesn’t throw out an EX or charge it. If you have the patience of a rock, you might win. :bluu:

Juri:
Her fireballs aren’t that bad. It has no range, so you can get within range and EX CS and start the SPD/TB shenz.

So everyone I play is jumping around a lot to get out of SPD range. It’s annoying. They are using the same strategy they do to beat Gief.

Man, it just seems like terrible match up’s all around. Hawk either sodomizes or gets molested. There’s no inbetween. I hope this changes once everyone gets enough practice with Hawk. I’m not sure what to do, some match up’s seem hopeless.

I def feel you on that one randomuppercut… I was playing at my friends and while matchups where the opponent has no fireball feel like t.hawk has a giant advantage I feel like any character with a fireball will just be a pain to deal with.

Played 7 hours last night against good competition. T.Hawk is so fun.

Ibuki: Raida beats everything. Don’t jump in, ever. Raida beats every jump in and dive for free. That move is so sick. Wakeup reversal Raida seems good so you have to play the game like it’s a mirror up close, except for the fact that, you know, she has kunai toss so first you have to get in. And if you get in, pray to god you stay in.

Juri: Get on her, safe jumps work best. You can beat out a reversal wheel with 360 because she’s still grabbable on startup. Getting in is annoying, just like how I imagine Gouken to be for Hawk. Bad matchup for Hawk, but crossup splashes and crossup block after a knockdown and you’re good to go. I’d say store a U2 for this matchup, but the motion is so shitty nevermind. You’ll never beat dive kicks having to do two hcb.

Dudley: Hawk Dive is punishable only by ducking upper, thunderbolt, and Rolling Thunder. That’s all we tested, but if I were to speculate (I think I’m allowed…) mk duck into Corkscrew might work. EX MGB will be blocked, or it will whiff because they did it too slow. Don’t worry about that move. Just enjoy your 360 animation afterwards. Fuck his stun damage too. j.hp s.rh ssb does 500.

Sagat: Overall it seems like a decent matchup, nothing seriously major. s.hp at the start of the round trades with all of Sagat’s everything but EX Upper and Angry Scar. And you have more health, so keep trading and doing damage. 720s should be easy to come by here, as EX CS should scare the crap out of mid range fireballs. And you have better long range pokes due to awesome hitboxes. s.hk is going to go down from midrange unlike how Gief is eaten alive by them.

Abel: Abel is a beast. Watch the fuck out, he has anti air now. Always jump in crossup splash on oki and OS a 360 on whiff to punish reversal roll. Abel’s only way to deal with crossups right now is to either EX CoD, Roll, or block. He can’t straight beat it. (Feels like the old ST loop without the j.lp) If he activates U2, immediately do a high arc hawk dive. You’ll beat him, or fly right over him.

You must be playing some bad hondas if you think honda is even. Have they forgot about stand fierce which cleanly beats just about every single normal hawk can throw out? I havent found anything that will beat it. I traded a few times with cr.rh but after that you cant set anything up besides empty jump in which case honda will always ex headbutt (really why wouldnt they?) and youre at square one. sure its theory fighter but i really cant tell you how often this situation happened. Also neutral j.rh was beating j.fp from honda, mainly because its faster.

Sounds like this is ST all over again, except Honda’s s.fp is good.

Shit :frowning:

Probably common knowledge at this point but I’ll throw it out there.

Blanka: You can punish Blankas U1 on block by dashing forward as he bounces away and 360 or 720 him.
Tomahawk buster beats his horizontal ball (I think this is his highest damage option) I also used Cr. lp on reaction if I didn’t have time to DP it.

I played around with Hawk today (mained Viper in vanilla), thinking about actually getting into him but the way my ass got handed to me so bad really makes me question that. Ill keep trying though and THIS MAY BE CRAZY TALK but I think Guile is bordering on broken.

I really hope not
Guile has always been my worst matchup, no matter what character I’m playing. Not sure what it is, but I either seem to make very poor decisions on when to jump in, or I sit there and eat sonic boom buffet.

For guile: From my exp. Condor dive over sonic booms does NOT work. With his lowered charge time and already fast recovery he can just throw another that seems to hit you more often than not. Not sure about crossup dives though. Should work, but I can’t play until tuesday >.<

I was a Guile main in vanilla. His main weaknesses are cross-ups and high-priority low normals. His normals are easy to FA as well. I expect Hawk’s cross-up and cr.mk to cause trouble, but you need to get into that range first. I bet this will be frustrating match-up.

Playing against Gouken turned out to be a nightmare. With Gief I could Lariat and ex-green hand and deal with fireballs but man it’s a nightmare to deal with using Hawk.

Ex Spire goes through fireballs! woot! I’ve been trying to master my spacing so I can backdash 360 on peoples anticipated jump-ins also.

From what I’ve played, Juri and Gouken shut down all of T.Hawks moves.

Juri’s high level fireball can stuff your dives, but I’ve found most random players and some friends using her to be relatively easy. The huge life difference really comes into play here. Her pinwheel kick can be punished with 360 on block. Can’t play right now since @ work but seemed like LP 360 if she uses from max range, any version + 720 if she did it right in your face. You can’t use the EX 360 on the LK version though, since it has slighty higher startup then the other versions. Since her fireballs can’t go all the way across the screen, it feels very much like a turtle match. Stand back and build up meter and if she jumps in on you, go with a Neutral Jump into appropriate response (Dive or land and throw), or a well timed DP. If she closes the gap a bit and tries to fireball you, use an EX Spire to bust thru and score the knockdown.

Gouken, idk. I’ve only played one person on Gouken so far and it was rough. The best bet seemed to be using EX spires or Focus Attacks to absorb his fireballs and close the gap. It was possible to Dive over his HP fireballs, but it was a complete crapshoot on actually succeeding. Once you’ve closed the gap, the match improves alot. Dive being armor breaking can stuff his Counter Attack, but I think once Gouken’s learn this matchup they’re not going to touch his counter. Otherwise, close up was basic Gief tactics, cross ups with Jumping D+HP, yadda yadda. I lost the match 2-1, but that’s at least what I got during my sole Gouken match.

Either way, Gouken - Sucks, Juri - Turtle!

REALLY hating the Vega match up. Tips?

Sim and Honda is BAD, especially a good sim. Honda you can trade but, its never in your favor. Gotta bait headbutts. Sim is really really bad, new version of VSF4 Seth vs Gief. Worse than ST.

Played today for roughly 8 hours. Only matchup I had a hard time with was Sagat. I really didn’t know how to get in.

I believe Condor spire goes over low tiger shots. Should help a little.

Can’t test at them moment, but I will when I get home unless someone beats me too it.

ok after playing the game for a few days I can now give some input on some of the match ups

Sagat: Right now I’d put it 6-4 in favor of Sagat but the more I play him, the less I fear him. EX Spire is your best friend in this match. It’s also possible to nail him with a Condor Dive after jumping a low tiger shot. St FP and St FK both beat Sagat’s St FK. And if you happen to hit him a cross-up splash, you can combo a st jab, st mp into Fierce TB for over 300 points of damage.

Gief: This match up is a 6-4 in Hawk’s favor because of his high priority pokes. St Fp and St FK beats almost anything gief does. Only thing he can do on the ground to get through that is EX green hand which is very risky. TB stop all of his jumpins dead and air-to-air condor dive beats anything that isn’t a headbutt from Gief. Dive also beats Lariat w=if you hit Gief square in the head.

I’ll have more tomorrow. I’m about to pass out =/

Just random things I’ve been picking up on a fight to fight basic.

Akuma - Since Akuma will more often the not follow the standard grappler rule of “teleport the hell out of here” when you score a knockdown and go for a crossup… Start your jump, right as you start to come down from the Apex of your jump, Hit a Dive. If Akuma does a Backwards teleport, you’ll hit him on the way down.

Characters that throw double EX fireballs, if they try to lock you down with them after a wakeup from anywhere in the midscreen neighborhood, EX DP on wakeup, you’ll fly thru the fireballs and should come down and recover before they can, and proceed with shenanigans. If they’re at just about exactly midscreen, you’ll come down right on top of them for primo throw opportunity. I’m 100% on this working on Deejay, Seth and Gouken I can’t say for sure. I’ve landed it on Seth but I don’t know if was a guaranteed situation or not, and I don’t know how long the invul on EX DP lasts to make it thru Gouken’s.

Blocked Machinegun blow from Dudley is free 360/720 100% (should theoretically apply across all the grapplers), and I believe the same is true for Adon’s Jaguar Tooth

Today, I stupidly hawk dived into Ryu’s U2 (The shoryuken one)…Oddly enough it beat it. Needs some testing, but maybe U2 is not that good of an AA?
