Is rape culture normalized?

On a personal level, I never use the term rape around women, simply due to the fact that I don’t want to offend. That being said, I do use the term freely, but like it has already been said, it’s within context.

Where is Nathan Summers? I would imagine he would be in here already given the topic at hand…

When Magneto crosses me up all over the screen and snap back -> OCVs my team, I feel violated. Definitely raped.

Xbox 360 + Halo + CoDMW2 made popular this idiotic saying.

That’s a fairly ignorant thing to say. Gaming culture as a whole made this saying popular. The term rape was popular before COD or Halo…and definitely the 360.

Yeah I was about to say, thanks for the history lesson mr 16 years old.

I remember people using rape to describe defeat in games or other trivial shit 10+ years ago, so who knows when it started getting this kind of use…

Allow me to call your attention to this comic strip.

That strip was done barely a month ago. Now the sodomizing that’s being talked about here would clearly be done on to unwilling participants, which by definition, is rape. This comic got zero attention from the militant feminists who push out this idea of “rape culture”.

Fast forward a few weeks later and the “R word” makes its appearance, and mass panties become bunched. (If they even wear panties, I dunno.)

If the dick wolves comment had been “Every night, we are sodomized to sleep by the dick wolves”, this would not have been an issue, even though the action described would remain the same.

If all this outcry is over one word being used over another, even though all intents and purposes would remain the same, this whole thing is 100% about censorship, and not sensitivity, like these people claim.

That all being said, I do notice with saddening regularity the misogynist behavior that has taken over a large portion of the male gaming population. (Which is to say, most of the gaming population.) I tried to get one of my ex-gf’s into gaming in the past, but whenever she signed on to play she would be met with non-stop harassment from losers to the point where she now only plays single player games or games with me exclusively.

My theory is that a lot of (Not ALL) “hardcore” gamers hate women because they did not receive much attention from women when they were younger, for whatever reason, (maybe they were unattractive, shy, a loner, awkward, focused on video games too much, etc.) and through the relative safety and anonymity of the internet, they would lash out to whichever female dared enter their realm of gaming. That’s just 1 theory, there could be any number of reasons.

I hate that we’re all bundled into this stereotype of angry, bitter, hateful misogynist gamer nerds who can’t get women, but I hate even more that a lot of us live up to it.

^_-;

What are you? Twelve? This shit has been around since the early days of online FPS gaming.

This is part of the reason I dislike many gamers, despite being one myself. Also, I have a game-playing female cousin (no pics SRK, fuck off) and I think if one or more gamer strangers gave her shit, hit on her, or so much as looked at her funny, I’d show them just how big my foot is compared to their chests.

When I realize my dream of becoming a screenwriter and game designer, I’m going to troll gamers so fucking hard. Like seriously, I’m going to get books published about how dumb gamers are. Fuck gamers. Playing their games ‘n’ shit. And fuck women. … Wait…

The religion of Dr. B is based on critical thinking. Dr. B is like the Buddha, but don’t try defeating Dr. B, you’ll lose. Just practice reason and you’ll be cool with him. And visit his Mad Sexy websites.

Ill say it like this, people like to laugh and joke around. We all got our own wicked comedic sense and if someone doesn’t like it then…well thats there own problem.

Yeah, fuck gypsies, seriously. I was telling my gypsy the other day about how a bunch of gypsies were trying to get all gypsy on my gypsy!

Also, I dare you to use the bad form of the N-word in everyday conversation and in your “wicked comedic sense,” in public. Also, for some other racial slurs, use the word “gyp” (racial slur of gypsy, gypsy), “pork and cheese” (for Portuguese people), and everything Clint Eastwood says in Gran Torino.

Seriously, do that. I will actually PayPal you $0.60 CAD if you YouTube 6 real situations where you’ve taken my dare. I’ll up that to $0.60 USD if the videos include someone real-life air-comboing you.

Dr. B air combos elephants.

Like i said before id be more concerned about the KILLING culture being normalized. There are games where you kill people. Are there games where you Rape people? i can only think of a few japanese pC games that arent even released here.

When there are movies and videogames about actually raping people then i might agree. But so far definitely not. Its just a word, and most of the time it doesnt even mean what you think it means.

haha the title of this thread misled me so much because I misread it. No *rap *culture is not normalized.

haha i don’t think so. This term is used for far more than just games. haha at people trying to take credit for shit.

This term’s been used since way back in mkII (due to the fucked-up ai doing things like throwing you before you can even stand back up from the first throw). You couldn’t do a damn thing to prevent it, hence you got raped. Shit’s old but people under 30 think it just started cuz we stopped using it so much.

The word “metaphor” doesn’t mean much to you, does it, O.P?

Yeah kinda like how poker players suddenly started using the word sick and think they sound cool saying it…

Girls wanna be alllllmost raped. Like raped, but know your name.

I am still keeping up and reading the replies in this thread. I am minimizing my involvement to avoid potentially having the thread derailed by those who have some kind of agenda.

A few clarifications:

I have very little stake in the use of the term “rape” as it is being used in gaming circles today. I have a gaming community where people are more respectful of each other in general. Trash talk still happens, but it’s on a level that I’m more comfortable with and the frequency is low.

I can admit that I, personally, have rape fantasies.

I’ve also seen a few people pointing to “rape fantasy = wants to be raped.” There’s very distinct differences that need to be understood between rape fantasy and rape. I’m having a hard time finding sfw articles regarding the differences, but the following should suffice for now:

Why Men Should Fear the Rape Fantasy: Sex + Other Releases: Details (a three page article, links to page 2 where the begin to discuss the relevant portions)

Rape fantasy - Definition (The most important part being under the “Roleplay” section: “It is only a rape fantasy if all participants are consenting adults. As soon as someone is no longer consenting, it becomes a real rape.”)

And from another site that I don’t think I can link directly to:

Spoiler

The final point I want to address is that I also understand that context matters, but what might not be understood is that many people (such as girlfriends or other girl gamers) do not understand or condone the context and thus keep themselves distanced from people who use a term or phrase that has had such serious implications so flippantly.

I’ll also share my personal involvement with this situation. I play Starcraft primarily and I love watching the Plott brothers doing their casts and analyzing replays. I also live with my girlfriend and she knows that I love watching these casts and actually wanted to sit and watch one with me one time to get involved with what I was interested in. This particular episode of the Day[9] daily had Sean using the term “rape” to describe how one unit is a hard counter to another unit. He was also using it within commonly acceptable gamer context with great emphasis on hyperbole. At that point she made a face and just left to do her own thing. A thought that soon crossed my mind after that was “we’re lucky I’m not into MvC2.”

I love Sean’s antics. I love phrases like “bear semen energy drink.” I also care about my girlfriend and being sensitive to her feelings is part of that. I guess that I contend that it doesn’t take being in love with or caring deeply for a specific person to be decent enough to not be so callous with what is said around others. Especially with a term that can easily invoke PTSD in a disturbingly large percentage of girls (and guys too… 1 in 33 last I checked).

You don’t even have to be sexually assaulted yourself to feel some kind of empathy for others. Try asking your mother/sister/aunt/niece whomever you know personally if they’ve ever been sexually assaulted. You might also take a moment to imagine how you would feel if your girlfriend or boyfriend got raped by someone. Then take that and accept that people actually do go through this with increasing frequency and that there is a chance that you can go through it too.

I’m not trying to censor or say “hey, don’t do that.” You can do whatever you want. I’m just trying to illuminate that it’s not just “feminazis” that find it crude and distasteful and people generally don’t like being subjected to that sort of thing.

Much like any derogatory term, it’s all fun and games till it happens close enough to you. But to say that rape “culture” is normalized because a lot of gamers say it is a little off-base. I think Chris Rock said it best: “We want to kill Osama Bin Laden, we don’t want to rape him.”

Also, rape has always been “worse” than murder. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Law & Order/CSI/any other show where murder happens marathon. No one gets up in arms with the idea of murder being an OK topic for a large percent of popular culture, but when it has anything to do with rape it’s edgy and controversial.

I think the reason that rape is edgy and controversial moreso than murder is because the victims are still around to talk about it (if they’re not killed afterwards anyway)?

Then again, I can almost guarantee that someone who witnesses a murder and watches as someone dies in utter confusion as to what is happening to them won’t find murder very funny either.
