Is "Mentally Retarded" Considered Not PC Now?

everything about this post, every single thing

That’s falling out of favor with the more ‘extreme’ groups too, folks don’t like disabilities being called disabilities.

It gets pretty crazy in the biz, you get terms like ‘the individuals we serve’ thrown around a lot. Still, I’ve never seen ‘differently abled’ ever used seriously by any professional.

PC is weak. I mean, I go to places called Oriental, in the restaurant name, with Asian people running the place. Apparently Oriental is a hurtful thing to say to someone unless, you are referring to something from Asia that is not a living human, so like Oriental art or food. Same with Indian, as in Red Indian, with natives running it. I hate the whole concept of it is okay to say if you are whatever the negative word is supposed to represent.

Of course, as a large white man, I must be constantly careful so I do not offend someone and then they get free shots at calling me a racist. I remember at work, I disagreed with a black co-worker of mine. We got along great, liked sports and talked about other harmless things. But I disagreed with someone he did to the part we were repairing, and he instantly, started calling me a racist and horrible things like that. A day later, I asked him why he would call me that, knowing that I am not a racist. He said he was sorry and just part of his “natural defense” towards white people. It pissed me off and now we don’t talk, which is a shame honestly.

complaining about PC is so 1996 though.

I get it, you’re the real victim here!!!

Wait a minute…

When was UMVC3 ever considered for Windows Live?

That is a shame. People should be better than to pull the race card.

Retards cant even understand the term cognitively deficient. How is that better?

In fairness some of them can definitely understand the term ‘retarded’ and get extremely upset to be called as such.

I can’t read the words “cognitively deficient” and not see that as any less insulting that “mentally retarded”. One of them says that the action of your brain is slow/backwards, while another says that you are quite literally lacking in the process of knowing.

Of course, one of those has a more common use as an insult than the other, but if “cognitively deficient” becomes the commonly used term, it’s only so long until a new insult is derived from it. Maybe it’ll be “deffies”, but that might overlap with the existing but now largely underused “deafy”.

Speculating on future insults and ways to speak in a prejudiced manner of people is probably more fun than it ought to be.

It’s always confusing when I read an article and sometimes see the word “Jew” written as “J*w”, as if the very spelling of the word is offensive.

I may not suffer from dwarfism, but if I was a dwarf I’d be more offended being called a “little person” than a midget. Ironically, “little person” sounds far more demeaning to me, almost condescending.

It’s up to the subjects to decide what they want to be called, not us. We don’t really know how it feels, to be frank.

It’s weird, because given the meanings of the words, “mentally retarded” should not be offensive at all. It’s only viewed as offensive because it’s said about/to people to whom it does not literally apply.

But, but, but White Shadow - dwarfism and being a midget are completely different conditions!

Interestingly, IRL dwarves being proportioned normatively, being akin to fantasy halflings, and midgets being proportioned in a manner more closely resembling those of fantasy dwarves.

which happens continuously ‘moron’ and ‘cretin’ were medical terms once too, my impression is that they partially fell out of favor because they got too much use outside of their official meanings.

Scientifically accurate terms falling by the wayside, due to their misappropriation by the common man.

Say what you will, but “property” was infinitely more succinct than “the pursuit of happiness”, imo.

Dratted plebs…

I’m pretty certain they never came up with either categorization.

I knew there were many different types of dwarfism, but I didn’t know “midget” was a specific term.

Heard that from a professor. This thread is making me want to bust out my George Carlin collection

your prof isn’t a professional in the sense I mean it most likely though :stuck_out_tongue: He almost certainly doesn’t work in the field.

Well dwarves (or whatever) are different than MRDD, my point was more that if somebody objects to you calling them something, its best to accept it and not second-guess.

Eh.
'Tis probably not the technical term… but the term dwafism specifically refers to normatively proportioned persons of diminutive stature.

In automotive retard gets used a lot when discussing about timing in an ignition system. You can either retard, slow the timing, or advance it, make it faster. That’s all I can really add to this thread. Other then, when I was a kid I remember kids would do the retard hand arm movment, which was limping the hand and beating it against the chest while making a funny face. LOL I still find that kind of funny.
