Nah, I am fine with entering multiple games. Makes you a more versatile player overall, imo…just dont spread yourself too thin and you should be ok. Besides, games that arent as popular get more burn this way IMO (carryover from tourney players in other games)
tho in all seriousness, i think its fine to take at least 3 games seriously. anything more than that is hard, or you have to be a talented player. I like switching between hella games at tournaments tho
i stay away from several entries when i can too. some people can do it …but ive never been willing to give it a chance…if it sounds like a bad idea , sometimes it is a bad idea. if you enter several tournaments … they should at least not be at the same time… ive tried tekken and super turbo tournaments at the same time , it felt like my name was beeing called right and left …and the brackets get all confusing. i say focus on one game at a time.
I agree. I’m never going to try and pursue more than three games at a time.
Guilty Gear XX^Core is an older title, but everyone reckons it still has alot of life in it.
Soul Calibur IV just recentely came out and alot of people are playing it. I presume it will be like that for a long while.
Definitely! I’ve gotten pretty good at it myself, and that isn’t my problem here.
Just about all 2-D games have a shared set of core fundamentals, as one can tell from watching people like Justin & Buktooth. The same is true for 3-D games - a lot of top Calibur players came from Tekken and got good at it quickly. The more games you learn, the more apparent this becomes.
The fundamentals can carry you far, but not all the way to the top. You really have to put a lot of time into each game to win tournaments. As such, I think you may have to stop being a “generalist” for a while if you wish to become elite. Once you reach that level, then you can go back to playing lots of games without your performance suffering.
Again, for me it’s about playing time at tournaments more than anything else. Just offering some more thoughts. =)
it depends on your skill, take j.wong for example, he plays tons of games and wins a lot. MvC2, 3s and so on
I do play many games on my spare time, but usually here there arent many games at tourneys, only 3S, CvS2, MvC2, GGAC, KoF something and sometimes HSF2. so I only play 3 or 4 of those and im pretty confortable with the results (im the GGAC and KoF XI champ here) but if there are more games to play with, ill gladly give them a try (im waiting for BB, TvC and SF4)
so yeah, it depends but, playing too many games it MIGHT affect you if they are too different on their playstyles (like playing 3S after playing GG for example)
100% absolutely YES. Without any doubt. When I first started hosting multigame tournaments, it was terribly difficult to switch to a different game. I’d be trying to throw with lp+lk in ST, and trying to parry in Garou. But as I kept doing these, the effects of switching games wore off, and now the only game I need a warmup to sit down with is fuckin’ Smash. That shit is NOT muscle memory yet.
even though i generally enter a million tourneys, i think that definitely hurts your overall performance
after a match, you generally think about it. what you did right. what you did wrong. you think about things you need to focus on in upcoming matches
you get to watch your competitors play. pick up on tendencies, prepare yourself for things
when you play in multiple games, you rob yourself of a lot of that introspection time, and you basically go into each game “cold” as a result
in tournaments i really care about (which is basically only evo), i’ve been entering less and less games as the years go on. last evo i only entered three games (as opposed to earlier evos where i’ve entered every game). other tourneys i’m generally horribly out of practice so i just go for fun. in those i enter tons of stuff because i don’t care too much about my performance
… though i admit i do get a little annoyed still when i place below where i expect to, even when i tell myself it’s just for giggles
You can be spreading yourself thin, but at the same time you may also be raising your potency on fighting games in general.
Anyway, I say that if someone else (e.g. JWong) can win multiple tournaments, then I should stick with the mentality that I can too. We’re all human, but it just boils down to whether you have enough time for all these games really.
I reckon that if you can develop the ability to completely dive into the game you’re currently playing (at the tourney), having just stepped off another game, then you would do well. Too often do you get people saying “Aww this game feels weird because I was just playing 3s”. Every game has it’s own mindset, get into it and forget about any other games and you will always perform better.
Actually, GGAC is still very new. Especially when you compare it to all the other popular competitive games like 3s, Marvel, CVS2 etc etc.
