There are only really four stock sticks worth buying that do not require heavy modding in order not to suck balls:
Virtua Stick High Grade for use on PS3 and PC. It comes with all Sanwa parts
MAS sticks which you can get for anything. They come with HAPP parts. Convex buttons are generally considered to be better than concave due to the larger deadzone no matter what Tiberious says (I would not trust anyone who takes their screen name from a pedophile Roman emperor BTW. Tiberious, if you are reading this, please choose a different screen name the next time you sign up for a forum as people may get the wrong idea about you.)
Hori Real Arcade Pro sticks for PS2. These come stock with a Sanwa stick and shitty knockoff buttons. The buttons can be swapped out really easily for Sanwa/Seimitsu however (all you need is a screwdriver and a non-retarded brain).
**4. Neo Geo Stick for PS2 and NeoGeo. These come stock with a Seimitsu stick and buttons. Their only flaw is that they cannot be used for Street Fighter and Tekken.[/**QUOTE]
Hmm i did not know that these come stock with seimitsu parts…coud some one tell where these sticks are still being sold(plz no overpriced ebay shit)
Also does anyone know the model of the buttons and stick…?
The old style Neo-Geo sticks and the PS2 clone of it do NOT use Seimitsu buttons but the buttons do use the same brand of microswitch seimitsu buttons use. Frankly, the thing hurts hands. You can mod the original Neo-Geo stick to use 24mm sanwa or seimitsu microswitch buttons instead, but I’m not sure how difficult it is. The stick is made by Seimitsu, but you’d have to hit neo-geo.com forums to find any specifics on it. Actually buying one, yeah, you’re pretty much stuck with ebay or the selling forums here or on neo-geo.com
IMHO, its not worth getting. The old Neo-Geo stick is handy because the simple nature of the one-line-per-button-active-low setup that is very easy to use in geeky projects like Superguns, but actually playing the thing makes me feel like I have early onset RSI. You can get a much nicer stick for playing for the same or less money than those would cost. But again, its all my opinion.
anybody else use the arcade stick for dreamcast? the white and grey one with the green buttons. to me, thats my ideal arcade stick. its loose but not too loose and very responsive. convex buttons and a short balltop stick, perfect for 360/720s. I love that stick and I wish my other ones were just like it.
but what I really want is a stick for mame, my regular controller broke and I wanna upgrade to something a little more fierce
thanks. I got mine for like $40 so if any of my friends come over, they can have a stick to use if we decide to play beat 'em ups (most of my friends don’t play fighters).
I don’t know about the PS2 clone but the original Neo Geo old style stick uses the same switches as Seimitsu buttons (Tokai brand), the only difference is that they’re the PCB version. I agree that the buttons as a whole are not very good.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the Dreamcast Agetec Green Goblin stick. No longer in production of course but their enough to go around I believe and great to mod. Stock wise you’d be surprised the stick and buttons are good, just a little sensitive with the stick, but does way better than RedOctanes and SFAC Sticks.
Well, I looked at my options and personally, it looks like it’s cheaper to build my own frame than go with a MAS or similar decent-quality stick. Given that I’ve got the time and the ability to do so, I figure I’ll just go that route myself, and throw one together for my gf while I’m at it.
Any recommendations for sticks? I don’t want something too sensitive on the diagonals, but rather something I have to go to about 4:00 to hit a diagonal on, with a fairly short throw (I play gief, short throw = faster spins).
I agree! Even with original nuby stock parts it was decent. The AC stick is a good buy though its greatness does not fully come out until real Happ parts are put in. New or used, either way i recommend it.
The only gripe i have about my modded AC is the PCB in it does not seems to work with converters. When connected to my radioshack psx-to-USB, nothing was recognized as if it was not even plugged in. Maybe one of these days i could try a different converter or PCB and see if it would work.
Something like the MAS might be a little pricey(about $90) but it is well WORTH the investment longterm, and fixing anything in it yourself that might break is pretty simple(nothing but buttons, wires, and disconnects inside).
So the MAS you buy now could last you forever, unless you drop a 40lb weight on it or something. By the way going the cheap-route is not something you want in a stick, gotta have reliable stuff.
Oh, I don’t plan to go cheap, I’m just seeing the $90 for a MAS, or the $70 or so it would cost me to build my own with Sanwa parts, or the $50 or so for HAPP parts (unless they’ve gone up). I’m still having trouble deciding if I want to go American or Japanese, as there are few arcades around here, and none terribly well maintained.
Getting a manufactured stick is a good idea for your first. Thats what I did. They are not too expensive and they work.
If you find that you use it alot, upgrade. I dont care how little money you make, you can come up with $150 for the stick you really want. The hit to your wallet will sting for 3-4 days MAYBE, then you will forget about it and you’ll have a great stick.
Here is a Toodles quote from another thread:
*"Don’t. Just don’t. If you try to build one, it’ll suck, you’ll want to build another, you’ll be buying all these tools, that one sucked too so you make another and another getting a little better each time but never actually making you happy and you’ve spent over $1k before you know what happened.
Figure out what you want, and have someone else make it. You will NOT be able to build cheaper than you can buy on your first stick and get anything near as good."*
Pretty sure the MAS is built with Happ parts, maybe there is an option for Japanese sanwa or semitsu(sp?). I’ve played on both Sanwa and Happ and i much prefer U.S Happ, so my AC has competition stick & buttons(convex ftw!).
Although i may be a little biased in that regard since i grew up on playing U.S machines.
You should try both. You never know, especially when most tournaments are console. You might actually find Sanwa to be a lot better than HAPP(which they are naturally), or vice versa.
And yeah, Timoe is correct. You should ALWAYS want to upgrade to something better.
They run sales on the Tekken 5 Bundle at Gamecrazy a lot for 30 which includes the game and the stick. People post when that sale is comming up on SRK, I missed the first two but bought mine on the third.
the “green goblin” is one of the worst sticks i have ever used… though i have seen others straight up beast with it. for some reason i cant hit diagonals on that stick worth a damn… just a personal opinion.
