Is an arcade stick necessary?

If you plan on doing tournies at least a few times a year and getting serious about the game, buy a stick. There is a whole thread over which one to buy, but unless you are serious about fighting games it is not worth it. A good stick will probably run at least $125 and up depending on sales and it isn’t necessary unless you are able to play on a high enough level or plan to since they are only really good for fighting games and perhaps some arcade shooters. For top level play, I’d say it’s necessary, but the important thing is to take your time making sure you want to invest before you spend the money on what might become less important later on.

If you have money for it, get one. They are great, the feel of it, the sounds of you slamming buttons helps with execution, timing and learning combos. The stick is much more precise. I swapped, the first few trys with it are awkward, but you get used to it pretty quick. I got a cheap tekken 6 stick, I can’t even imagine how good the higher ranged ones are, particularly the mod-able ones.

I’m a noob on this site, and I can’t find that thread, could you please link it to me? I’m trying to get BB for xbox 360 and buy a stick, thank you!

Okay…

Thank you so much.

I never really used to use a stick. I had been using a pad all my life up until a little while back. Some things are still easier to do on pad than on stick and vise versa. A stick isn’t at all necessary, but if you’re thinking about switching it up then give it a try. You will probably get your ass handed to you while trying to adjust, but use that as fuel to get better.

that’s a lie. you can move your fingers faster than your arm/wrist. that’s YOUR issue with a pad.

in blazblue though, it depends on the character. like carl and arakune need sticks because of negative edge.

This is not entirely true with the distances being covered here. Also, with a stick, your fingers are on all the buttons at all times.

The major problem with playing on pad is that it’s not universal, so if you go to a tournament and it’s run on 360 while you played on PS3 pad, now you are doomed.

Okay, this thread is old but after replacing the square gate in my Hori VX with an octagonal one I feel executions are way easier, especially with Tsubaki’s air combos and IADs. + I actually managed to beat 7 of Valkenhayn’s missions in CS2 (using turbo with B for the wolf combos, that’s one thing people don’t remember about when discussing benefits of playing with a stick but whatever).

I would suggest a stick for one reason only, as systems change so do the controllers, and pad players are always having to jump thru hoops to get old controllers to work on new systems. As a TO i have had to be the guy who awards a round or a game to someone because a converter fucked up. But a stick can alway be modded to play a new system and a new stick is often not drastically different from an old stick
