You just assume that the non-American is the better player then? That’s basically the same as rooting for someone because of their country, except you’re rooting for someone because of their opponent’s country.
That sounds hypocritical as shit, unless your bias says that foreign teams and players are ALWAYS better than usa ones.
No, I didn’t mean to say that I am rooting for the non-American or that I assume the non-American is the better player. If it’s an American vs a foreigner, I’ll root for who I feel is the better player OR if it’s a personality that I like. Sometimes, I’ll root in favor to the matchup as well. I find myself rooting for Snakeeyez considering the uphill battles he faces by using Gief. But if the US chants break out, I will automatically feel compelled to root against the US player so that those chanting like monkeys can realize that it doesn’t boil down to US vs Japan. I’m sure that neither player signed up for representing their country on the spot. I’m in it to win it for myself, not my country.
