Yes, from what I understand the banks purposely preyed on people like that, and that is obviously not okay either. But educating people so they can’t be tricked(in addition to tons of other benefits) would be good for everyone and could prevent stuff like that in the future.
This was never mentioned in school once. Thank you, becuase now I know how much more needs to be taught to us.
Actually, banks try to avoid this whenever possible, because they now have a house they no longer want, and to get rid of it they often will take a loss on it.
However, the people taking out the loans should know enough math to understand that they cannot pay for the house they are looking at. That is the fault of the education system, which teaches you to do something to pass a standardized exam over actually teaching you how and why something works. Many kids are capable of doing once they understand, however the current system doesn’t push for an understanding, only the ability to detect a pattern. If people understood what math was needed to evaluate their loans, they could have calculated the costs and realized that they cannot pay for a house preventing an eventual foreclosure.
You can teach any kid the Pythagorean formula, but if he doesn’t know why, it works and where you can use it, then it probably won’t be useful to him in everyday life, but he will probably be able to pass a question on a test asking you to “use the pythagorean theorem to find the value of x.” That is why the American education system is flawed. We need better teachers, and for that we will need to give them better wages.
It isn’t that the people were evil rather that they were taken advantage of because they didn’t know any better.
A similar parallel would be getting mugged. It is never the victims fault he got mugged, but sometimes know how to avoid it or what to do can help.
What are you doing right now that is going to change the world? I’ll wait.
Again, most people don’t do anything that revolutionizes the world. It’s not shameful.
It’s what PEOPLE ACTUALLY do. It’s not hypocrisy if it’s the truth. You are not making the business deals that are fucking over the economy. You are not the person outsourcing jobs to save yourself a few bucks. You are not a major player in any market. You are nothing. If you feel as if you’re more then you are clearly wrong. There is a world outside of your bedroom. Just because you make and spend money doesn’t mean your money is the end result.
WTF am I doing? Im bettering myself by learning as much as I can, so I can better prepare myself to be a productive human being, and not be another dumb shit that contributes to the problem. Your reasoning “therefore because” is so fucking idiotic, and your assumptions that a cog in the collective is shit unless its a player is so fucking idiotic. Believe it or not, the power of many means more than the power of one.
So you keep waiting there wallowing in your stupidity.
No. It is hypocrisy.
hyp·o·crite
[hip-uh-krit]
noun
. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
You did the very thing you were criticizing us for. All this other fluff about actions meaning nothing is just you derailing the topic.
THAT is the truth.
^ I didn’t pretend to have anything above anyone else. Not exactly hypocritical.
As for derailing, this thread has already derailed multiple times, and my point was looking at it from the original article writers point of view. Nothing more. Not quite a derailment. I think you’re looking or trying to read into things beyond what they are.
I am doing the same as you. That doesn’t mean I am making the decisions that effect our entire nation. The power of many FUELS the power and the decision making of the individuals at the top.
You seem awfully angry because you’re unwilling to accept you’re not contributing a whole lot besides insults on an internet forum.
your stupidity, and your rationilization piss me the fuck off.

I know you didn’t pretend to have anything above anyone else. But that’s not the point. I said “you criticize other people for talking as if they know what people should do … and then follow it up by talking as if you know what people should do” because that is what you did. Criticizing others for the very thing you ended up doing yourself is textbook hypocrisy.

No. You’re not. The original author’s point of view is that making mathematics mandatory prevents us from discovering and developing young talent. Your viewpoint is that algebra is unnecessary because nobody posting here is changing the world with their algebra knowledge. The author’s aim is to reduce education requirements to develop talent in other areas. Yours is to discourage others from even bothering because people posting here are “doing nothing”. The only thing you have in common with the author is that you want to diminish academic standards in America even further than they already are. It’s just that he does it under the guise of “developing young talent” whereas you can’t be bothered to learn algebra because it doesn’t have the potential to “change the world.” His viewpoint is coherent and well-written (albeit misguided). Yours is just a poorly written rant that has no real focus. You begin by hypocritically pointing out what people should do, tell us your experience with Chinese and Indian people whose intelligence you found to be “[not] exactly superior in intelligence” and “have not been too bright,” and conclude that a person’s obtained knowledge doesn’t change the fact that they are “doing nothing.” You then go into another rant about the economy which really has nothing to do with the necessity of algebra being taught in our schools and ultimately it seems that all that you are trying to say is that we are nothing.
Accepting your depressing view on life doesn’t help me. To go through life believing “I am nothing” doesn’t help me, it doesn’t help other people, and it certainly doesn’t help anybody that is in grade school, .Thinking “I am not some player in the world market who significantly influences the economy, so I should feel sorry for myself and not bother learning algebra” is probably the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life … and this takes into consideration everything Matriarchy has posted in this thread … which in case you haven’t been paying attention, is pretty bad.

your stupidity, and your rationilization piss me the fuck off.
Doesn’t piss me off. It actually makes me feel better about myself knowing that I don’t think like him. My day is sunnier and the sun’s not even up yet. Thanks, Songo.

I’m sorry, nobody posting here is changing the world with their algebra knowledge, and you know what? That’s okay. For the every day person; those skills aren’t necessary. I see the value, but I don’t see the necessity. For everything thinking China and India are filled with so many “Intelligent” individuals, what are you basing this off of? Stereotypes? Because I know people from China, who live in China, and they aren’t exactly superior in intelligence. Have you seen Indian people? The one’s I’ve encountered haven’t been too bright. Like with any ethnicity you’re going to have a majority of “dullards” then you will have people if “intellect.”
Economists and people who deal with money directly are the reasons other countries are on the rise. The value of education is the value for every day people. Your average engineer isn’t changing the world. He’s just keeping it going.
That’s what people don’t understand. Very few actually control what happens. You and I don’t. We just keep the world going. We hope to change the world. If we don’t, someone will. Your obtained knowledge doesn’t change that you’re doing nothing. Neither am I, regardless of how intelligent or dumb we may be.
I like what was stated before how some kids can’t even fucking READ. READING is the most fundamental skill and we have people who can barely do that. I was astounded to find out that most kids in my high school had some problem with reading at some point. This is a school that is nationally recognized as a school of excellence.I thought everyone else was like me and was able to pick things up and comprehend what I was reading on paper. Most people can’t. It’s ridiculous.
reading is a subset of math.
if you can’t read, you can’t learn math

argument destroyed pls try again

Which is what I said which is why it’s important. Good job.

Reading comprehension for something I typed myself?

no… reading comprehension for something I typed myself
just cuz u r unimportant doesnt mean u have to be too stupid to know how to read as well
trolololol
In our future, engineering is going to be crucial to landing jobs in our country. If we get rid of algebra we’re going to lose our competitiveness in the global market.
