lmao this thread has me going back to beef up my geometry/trigonometry(never took them in high school, amazingly I still passed calculus though it was by the skin of my teeth), going to look into probability/statistics after. This coming from a longtime member of the Math hating fanclub
You have $100 dollars. You want to buy some crack, but can only afford $20 worth of it. The rest of it you want to buy as pot. There are two types of pot available. The most expensive is $100 an ounce, and you want at least 1/2 an ounce since itās really good. The other type is cheaper and goes for $40 an ounce. How many ounces of the cheap pot can you get with the remaining money?
Well, you start with $100 dollars and buy $20 worth of crack (however little that may be), you end up with $80. Half an ounce of $100/ounce pot is $50, so you have $30 left.
20+0.5(100)+40x=100
50+40x=80
40x=80-50
40x=30
x=30/40
x=0.75
At $40/ounce, you can buy 0.75 ounces of the cheap pot.
Even drug addicts need algebra. Case closed.
no, because you donāt actually have 100$. you have INFINITY dollars! because those dollars fluctuate at the quantum level! so you can actually buy an infinite amount of weed with it
Donāt tell that to the local drug addicts lol
no dont worry about it. 4 dimes - 1 dimes = INFINITY if you been following this thread at all
I read page 1 and my head hurt.
Should I try reading the rest? Or will it make me want to punch a baby?
you will laugh as you punch that baby repeatedly.
yeah this thread is great read all of it
anyway back to why math is cool. what iām amazed at is all the clever shit people come up with. for example, one genius figured out you can approximate a function as an infinite sum. so something like a sine wave can be modeled off a sum of polynomials. take a look at the sine function:
truly mind blowing and awe inspiring. while i might never have to use taylor series for my work, i appreciate it as how beautiful and elegant math is. gives me a boner every time.
Naw fuck that. Buy the weed and the fact that its in a state of quantum flux indicates that thereās a probability density that itāll turn into infinite weed. You can then sell parts of the infinite weed, or smoke it.
This thread was supposed to be about whether or not Algebra should be necessaryā¦
Yet you give examples that no one who chooses to go beyond Algebra will give a shit about, nor will actually matter to them (or anyone). Empire State sized dimes? Currency in quantum flux? Um, Iāve got some shit in my pocket that adds up to $11.00 I want something that costs $10 with an 8% tax rate. The quantum state (lol) of the money in my pocket will always add up to $11. The arithmetic on my paper will always reflect that Iāll have enough money to buy my item and get $.20 change, and if the tax rate, the money I have, or the cost of the item changes I can calculate with perfect accuracy what I need to pay, and how much money Iāll get back.
Because Algebra is basic fucking math, it will always perfectly represent the original. Itās too simple not to.
IS ALGEBRA REALLY NECESSARY I DONāT KNOW DO COLORS REALLY EXIST?
I like to assume that Iām not in the Matrix for practical reasons.
I donāt see why not.
Oh damn.
It looks like my statement may indeed be imperfect, thus meaning humanity is capable of perfection. So maybe my statement is correct?
But that also means your statement about my statement also has the possibility of being flawed. We can doubt everything!
Looks like there are no maxims (unless there are, this statement might be flawed too?). Paradoxical circular logic has trapped us. If only our ability to reason was greaterā¦if only we werenāt so limitedā¦so flawedā¦if only we wereā¦perfect.
Except it was never meant to be a sound argument. Only a deductive argument can be sound.
Deductive arguments follow from a given set of premises. Since we can never fully analyze all human actions that have ever occurred, we have no defined premises to create a conclusion from. Thus, saying humanity is incapable of perfection is a probability statement. It is an inductive argument. To prove it wrong one would have to find a single perfect action within the entire body of human action.
Inductive arguments are said to be strong or weak. Since it would be extremely difficult to find a single human action incapable of improvement, the likelihood of my statement being true is extremely high. It would be considered a strong inductive argument.
You donāt know what sound means.
Not that this should surprise anyone considering you donāt know how to spell quantum.
Honestly making fun of someoneās misspelling of a single word is something I have always found to be really weak. Especially since there are things called typos. That and the English language is a mess anyways so expecting everyone to spell every word perfectly is silly.
He started it. -_-
disregard entire post and focus on a simple spelling mistake because you have no real rebuttal to his argument besides a History Channel understanding of Quantum Mechanics. And spelling matters more than actual content and validity of said content so it doesnāt matter.
Yep, worst poster of 2012. Worst than that dumb bitch Miss Josslyn.
Wait a second, is Matriarch Miss Josslyn? They both post the dumbest things imaginable, with no real understanding of what they are talking about. They both made every thread they jumped in about themselves, or derailed it. Pretend to be strong independent women, and embody I can do it by myself attitude, therefore so should you. Use their life as a source of authority for their crappy posts and or points. They also disregard valid points and arguments, and attack the smallest mistake in any argument in order to invalidate said argument.
IIRC, Matriarch also said some bull shit about having posted pictures about herself and being ridiculed or the images being twisted by forum monsters. Miss. J posted supposed pictures of herself in hot girl thread and got the same treatment.
Or
most āfemalesā who post on SRK are all on the same level of stupid.
actually you started it with your poor understanding of Mathematics.
I think a potential problem with your approach is that we often donāt know how weāre going to apply various sciences. For many careers, discovery is often an important part; perhaps even the only part if you get in to a proper science role. So, giving examples of how mathematics can be applied really doesnāt paint the whole picture, in my opinion.
Hey guys Iām going to go work out. I hope the weights donāt go into too much quantum flux and crush me.
lol
I only brought up quantum stuff because theoretically all patterns of matter will eventually repeat.
You should hope that they spontaneously teleport far away from you and that your musles simultaneously get insane quantum fluctuations in your muscles so that they grow to the size you want them.
and how was that relevant
There are plenty of situations where youāre going to have to use math, and letās say youāre never going to use algebra itās not going to hurt to know.Just like not playing X character but knowing how to play him gives me an advantage. Same situation while I was on vacation, me and some other guys wanted to split a hotel but half way through the trip some people had to leave early. Instead of making everyone pay the end result even for not staying we used basic algebra to estimate the end cost for those that didnāt stay as long and for those that did stay as long factoring in the discount price and all of the other variables you run into in life. Learning to think outside the box is the lesson, not algebra,trig ect. ect. There are people who use Algebra every day and not know it, actually being conscious of it makes you aware of it and in the end makes you smarter.
