Iron Body - Zangief General

Playing more tonight, I was definitely hitting crouching opponents with HK. It’d be nice to know if it’s a hitbox thing, if it depends on the chain etc.

Greatn3ss, how is life working for you with all those points?
Looking at the leaderboards, I couldn’t find that many high-ranking Zangiefs. I found a lot of Ryus, of course.

Lol thanks man im really honored. spd’s are still a big threat in all your games. If you can show that you know the max range if your spd then you can make them think more. and i often find my self so centered on defence and hitting my opponent that i forget that there in spd range(odd). So you need to just relax and play a solid game. I do get complaints that zangief is godlike and yadda yadda yadda. Right now a combo i have just discoverd is Ryu Hp Dragon Punch> Cancel > Zangief St.mp, St.mp, St.mk, St.hp cancel> Cr.mk Dragonpunch. the timing is difficult but you do massive damage off it. and the corner combo is just a little bit different. as always id love to offer more tips to anyone. The higher the skill level the more paitence will be a key into your game. Also use St.mp more in your game just at a poke. it can punish pretty decently i find

Btw whats your gamertag for xbox live? im curious

Tested the magic series a bit in the lab:

If the opponent is crouching and you hit a magic series starting with cr.LK from max range and ending with s.HK, it will whiff! Doesn’t matter if you skip one of the buttons. The other problem is, the only normals which force standing on hit are close HP and close HK.
That means…well we have to live with it

I would recommend the following magic series:

  1. Punish opponent from far away (e.g. Unsafe special with a lot of pushback): s.MK - s.HK
(s.HP whiffs in this situation from max s.MK range)

  2. Start magic series from cr.LK max range: cr.LK - s.MK - s.HP
(s.HK would whiff on crouchers, you have to do s.MK or cr.MK. If you do cr.LK - s.HP, the HP will whiff)

  3. From poking with s.MP: s.MP - s.HK
(yes we all love our gdlk s.MP, but from max range s.HP will whiff. And the other problem is, if they are crouching, s.HK will whiff too. So from max range s.MP is not a 100% reliable tool to confirm into magic series)

It’s ViddMan but I got SFxT for PS3. For some reason I thought the joke characters were going to be fun. o_O

Cool info on the tag switch cancel. I haven’t been able to do anything with Rufus after Zangief’s tag cancel but I assumed nothing would catch after it. I might have to experiment just to get that tiny bit more damage.
I ended a match last night, though, with a boost combo, corner combo, switch cancel which is the first time I’ve seen the damage really be worth it. Felt awesome.
You’re totally right about the SPDs, too. Nothing beats someone holding down-back because they’re afraid of lariat only to eat an SPD.

Hm, that sort of sucks. I wonder if cr. MK still moves you forward. Without Sagats running around all that much, I haven’t really been using it at all.

Yeah, cr. MK moves forward. I don’t use it much too. Used it regularly as tick in SF4. Probably should use more in SFxT

Hello guys. I play Nina and Hwo. I came on here to ask how non-zoner characters deal with Zangief. I’ve gone to the training lab and nearly all of zangief’s good pokes like his cr. lp and standing mp have insane priority and great range and are very quick. It feels like there is no hurtable box on his limbs whatsoever. Anyways, I’m kind of at a loss of how to fight him in this game. My best pokes with either character will often trade. Any advice?

Street Fighter isn’t about using your character’s best pokes. You need to learn how to utilize all of your buttons. Juicebox once told me (I had a similar dilemma), “You have 12 normals, you have options”. If you only use your best buttons, you are limiting yourself to maybe 5 moves at maximum. Maybe your character has a strong move that you can counter hit Gief’s mp with? As for the jab:

Element 05: If your opponent starts overusing the feint explained above, take a quick step forward and attack with your strongest combo in sync with their rhythm. Light attacks may be fast, but they’re certainly not immune to mindgames. **Mike Watson **is known for making excellent use of such fakes, but Ohnuki’s 3S Chun Li found a way to make him pay

From Maj’s footsie guide. Gief’s jab maybe fairly unpunishable on reaction, but you can sure get a Mk or Mp to launcher if you can predict it successfully.

What makes the Sim matchup so bad?

Here’s a tip, probably been discuss but when Sim does his fireball, try jumping & land on it so you would get knock to the ground…Then you can roll towards Sim to get in closer…It beats out trying to get pass his long limbs…This should work for Sagat too…

Juri is still the biggest problem for me…

yeah but he could just jump and teleport away and backdash and be away from zangief just as easily.

I was one of the people most worried about Zangief and while it’s still early days, I think he’s pretty good. I fought a 0BP player earlier after (as I didn’t recognise the name and had “Any Skill” set) and got 1BP. I think I might just stick with this because I fear to imagine what sort of points I’d lose based on that.

Also for those of you that don’t read the video thread, holbroallinked to his stream and it’s one of the best Zangief showcases I’ve seen. Makes me wonder about pairing Zangief with someone with better defense because Rufus’s is woeful.

I recently just hit 18400BP and congrats man! and im proud of my self i recently beat the top player in xbl 4 times in a row !!

I recently made zangief my anchor so now im Ryu/Zangief which made alot of different in a good way. Since ryu can be so versatile he can be an offencive character or a defensive character. But i find my self playing more of a defence style with paitence mixed in because thats how i play zangief and this team seems to mix in well together. And i do yield better results when i play more defencively with ryu i think mainly because i can build up meter and force my enemy to come to me. So when i do get something going on i have more options to go with instead of wasting my meter on being pure offensive. i think thats what makes a good team is SYNERGY “meter is the oil that helps synergy blend together” what do you guys think

That is awesome, Greatn3ss. Well done!
I don’t think I’ve the patience to build up to A+. Not with this team, at least, haha. It’ll be sad to see myself slip down the leaderboards but at least I know I was the 2nd highest UK player for a short while and using a more interesting team than Ryu/Kazuya.

In terms of teams and playstyle, I definitely agree with defensive Zangief. I don’t think his offense is all that bad at all but Lariat, st. MP and his command throw range really lend themselves well to defense. Give him meter and he’s even more frightening!
I became a hell of a lot less afraid of Hugo when I realised what he’s up against when he needs to do damage. I’ve rethought about using his Super earlier, too. Giving myself that life lead earlier in the round really helped against an opponent who was too insistent on turtling.

This is why I’m not so fussed with Rufus any more. If he builds meter, he probably needs to reserve it for Messiah Kick or else I’ll be switch cancelling Zangief back in. Otherwise, his defense isn’t that good. If I’m just going to play Endless now, I’ll probably stick with him, though, because I love the character.

Points don’t mean shit. Also using gems to get wins you might as well be using turbo. I would suggest trying to go to a tourney and see if you can win there too.

I agree with you on the points, especially based on some of the people I’ve played but I don’t agree that using gems at all is somehow wrong or comparable to turbo. Perhaps I’ve misunderstood what you meant but when everyone else is using them, especially with assist gems, then the most I’m doing is putting myself on equal footing. I don’t believe I’ve ever won because of them.

Zangief is so good in this game. Too bad everyone sucks at this game, and all the players are going back to SFIV

really? i diddnt hear anything like that. even so im happy with this game

shut up guys we want him to be considered low tier so that way he dosnt get the nerf bat

Oh, they’re more worried about Rufus I think, and Hugo. They are much more herp-derp. So they get alot more attention on whining. Still I wouldnt mind the scrubby gief shit to be removed, as it makes mirror matches retarded, and I dont use it.

They should make s.lk s.mp -6 on block.

They should extent the hitbox on s.mp, so that Zangiefs only poke in Mirror is s.mp, that way you will be able to whiffpunish urself. Right now the two best pokes in mirror are c.lp and s.lp -_- tightly followed by max range s.mk

I use Ryu X Gief myself…

Midscreen punisher:
Zangief s.hp s.mp s.mp XX launch XX ryu c.hp HADO dash cancle c.hp XX hard tatsu TAG gief, s.mp, banflat lol, the dmg and corner carry is rediculess.

Zangief c.lp is still the best interruptor in the game. It stops just about anything that isnt allready active. and with OS EX-Flats you get 390dmg of off it. or more if you use c.mk s.mk XX lariat TAG.

Zangief s.lk has insane amounts of range for whiffpunishing. Imo, it should have the same recovery as Ryu c.mk, that way it comes with commitment.

Gief c.lk link combos are awkward.

SPD range is really good.

Beargrab creates random situations.

MP headbut is useless

Corner Juice: Ryu overhead TAG cancle gief, s.mp XX shortlariat s.mp s.mp s.mp XX lariat

I just started playing ranked this week. The competition is not really existing. So far ive lost 5 games. and won over 200. Against all kinds of bp ranging from 0-17000 So I dont really think Points are good for measure in this game, atm. I think many of the better players havent been playing to much ranked.

The best competition online is when Alex Valle is guest on peaceful jay’s endless lobby (Xbox), all the killers come to the lobby to test themselves against Alex, and he’s frequently beaten.

Arturo’s sim is the roughest I have run into. Also banana ken’s ken is very very tough because aa lariet seems useless vs air tatsu.
