Iron Body - Zangief General

some characters have a higher priority with their jumping attacks i have problems with Ken and Akuma jumpin tatsu that is. you probably shoudl try Cr.MP

The tatsus are the only thing I’ve found thus far that get me consistently but I think it might be beaten by starting lariat even later than normal since they fall slower and screw up the invulnerability timing. Learning how to use Cr. MP is not a bad option, though.

I depends on what time you lariat, but sometimes you need to respond with either a very early lariat (you will hit them with a rotation of it) or do the normal method extremely late.

I’ve found a properly spaced ken tatsu (perhaps its the super jump version that arcs so much) is impossible to hit with lariet or crouch mp no matter how late you time them. I’ve started doing neutral jump headbutts ala vanilla sf4 to keep them in the corner haha

That’s okay. Games are supposed to be difficult. Marduk is really fun to play with anyway.

I don’t know, difficult is one thing, then you play against a Good Juri.

or a good Dhalsim, or a good Raven.

anyone have any tips vs dhalsim? that the only character where i dont know what the heck to do

yea i have no idea how to fight that guy

Definitely need help against sim. Matchup feels so free!!! Anyways Gief is damn good, shuts down like 90% of the tekken cast. His super is just bonkers, punish normals and even fireballs on block is too sick. Currently running him with Julia since julia has the scary frame traps and long normals to boost combo into Gief which after getting frame trap trip guarded all the time keeps the opponent grounded. After enough st mp’s people start to learn to respect gief and then you can literally walk up SPD/super all day. Empty jump cr lk~kkk lariat is really good too. In the corner far st lk to kkk lariat is the most ridiculous block string shenanigan ever!

I recommend looking at last week’s WNF, snakeyez vs forgot his name but it was sim (who I think got 3rd place in the end?), but all I remember from that matchup was that snakeyez has killer yomi and he didn’t ever use lariet

My best advice is to have a counterpick or a good partner to deal with Sim, pretty sure Rufus blows Sim up HARD in this game. What do you guys think are Gief’s bad matchups in this game?

I’d say something like:

Slight Disadvantage:
Ryu, Guile, Jin, Chun, Akuma (Maybe even imo)

Disadvantage:
Dhalsim, Juri, Raven

Pretty similar to SF4 really, but instead of Rose and Seth we have Raven (Ugghhh). I’d also say Rolento might be slight disadvantage but it’s more close to even for me.

id say its pretty even for almost the whole cast accept sim and raven juri is a pain but is no where near as bad as sim and raven…also bison normals are a pain in the ass to deal with

I have noticed for Characters Guile, Jin, Chun, they will usally end up walking them selves in to the corner throwing fireballs and trying to zone you. DONT JUMP TO MUCH. thats when your dangerous and you can put pressure on them. characters with a bad anti air you can empty jump into spd more easy than others. say Raven, jin, law,.
The main key to being a good zangief is patience patience patience

for empty jumpins you need to space your jump depending on the character. and dont do it to much. make a habit to sue jumping attacks often and throw in an empty jump every now and then to increase you chances of it working.

if you guys want any more tips and if im knowledable enough ill gladly help you guys

Of course, if they’re aware of empty jump SPD, you predict their jumps and react to that too. Lariat seems a lot better in this game for catching people during vertical jumps in my experience.

Been using Juri as my opener and gief as my anchor since the game came out. Its great to be able to feel out the opponent with Juri and then come in with gief and exploit away. But yeah sim and for the most part double shoto whoop my ass free if they catch me on a lp. banishing flat to repel a fireball. Main reason I’m loving gief though : chasing people down with green hands who are trying to lame out that last 15 seconds.

Well I hit 10,000BP tonight.
Might just leave ranked there. Forcing myself to play with Rufus on point helped but I think the biggest boost was learning to use switch cancels. Magic combo, to snake strike, to Zangief’s tag-in combo. Feels good, man.

I haven’t tried doing mp-lariat switch cancel to further extend it further because even if it works, it’s probably not worth the meter due to damage scaling.

aye way to go I just recently hit 16,000BP. the higher up i get the more losses i take. even though its frustrating as hell. its the only way to improve ones self. congrats budd! and imo switch canceling is only worth it up to 2 bars anything more and the daamge scale is stupid.

How do you play against Juri?

I haven’t played that many but as in any match, patience is important. In my limited experience, once you build up some meter, her fireballs are more limited because she only has 900 health and EXGH->juggle is quite significant.
