Iron Body - Zangief General

I am liking Gief and Marduk both as grapplers. Playing with Cammy/Lili/King as well but don’t reayy have any ideas as to chemistry yet. Guile is looking good for a Gief pairing, great damage output and his glitched alpha counter (no joystick input needed, just hit HP+HK while blocking with meter)

i already know I’ll be using juri the hard part is picking between hugo and zangief

Oh and another thing is that Giefs PPP Lariet hitbox has been nerfed, it no longer has a hitbox behind him for the most part, crossups are much harder to hit (Unless you delay the PPP enough so that the lariet autocorrects its direction, but that’s not really possible all the time), and if they land behind you then can be literally STANDING IN YOUR LARIET without being hit. It’s pretty dumb and frustrating, it will no longer hit crossup tatsus.

Eh…sounds like capcom really has a hard time balancing zangief properly

i really don’t know who to pick now for Juri’s partner…i enjoy playing grapplers i really do but it seems like I’ll be frustrated no matter who i pick…

What’s the max damage after a trade to gief I’ve seem mp/sweep or mp/lariet does anyone have anything better. Also can you get to launcher from exgh hit.

It’s still a godlike anti air against non crossups and I have a feeling that all we need to do is delay the input so it can autocorrect, much like how shotos will not do reversal timing DP in order to autocorrect and catch crossups

If you’re talking about trading with PPP Lariat then I think they’ve gotten rid of trades, seriously now that I think about it non of my PPP Lariats have traded, they either get beat clean (if I did them too early) or I beat them clean (I did it the right timing). And even if you did get it to trade PPP Lariat hits people so far back now I don’t think you can follow it up.

Imo antiair lariat should have been nerfed in the 4 series before any other nerfs to Gief post-Vanilla, but it was like the one thing they kept the same about him heh. I’m totally fine with it being worse.

What’s his alpha counter? I haven’t gotten the game yet, still in Atlanta after Final Round. Picking up the game tonight on my way back home from the airport!

Yea I agree UD, I’ll take his walkspeed buff over his old lariat any day of the week. I actually haven’t tried out his alpha counter but I will when I get home.

Yes if there is 1 weakness zangief has in his game (and this seems to apply to everyone in this game that has godlike footsies) is that his post launcher game kind of sucks. Best I could find out is close mp to close mp to PPP lariet, but even that doesn’t always work because of spacing (you sometimes get far mp and that’s not special cancel-able). Basically I’ve been using close mp to PPP lariat for the most reliable damage. The damage isn’t great but PPP lariat knocks them back so far that it gets people cornered quickly, which I do like.

Oh and for your other question you can’t hit launcher after ex-gh.

I’m pretty sure its not possible to jump away from Gief’s Super. I’ve been landing in against people and never had someone do that yet. In that one video that everyone has been freaking out about, I think the Ogre player was already jumping before the Super was activated.

Yeah, RGB is awesome now. You can use it alot like a focus attack now, and dash cancel if the opponent doesn’t expose himself to it.

Did a quick short test. Ryu mk tatsu is -1 and Super punishes. so 1+0.

Just for tag in ender reference (rough figures) just did chain launch with Julia and then follow ups:

  • mk xx exgh (only 1 hit) 235
  • mk xx gh 260
  • mk xx kick lariat 255 (opponent stays closer on knockdown than punch lariat, but no reason to do this instead of mk xx gh)
  • mk xx punch lariat 280 (opponent goes almost full screen)

Also (rough figures again), chain s.lp x s.mp xx exgh, c.lk xx gh does 310(?), while c.lp x 2, s.lp, c.lk xx exgh, c.lk xx gh does 288 but looked like link combo left less grey life relative to damage done.

Also did quick test all based on Ryu frame data PDF:
EX Suplex is 3f and 250 damage, but many moves push out of range, while Super does 340 and has pretty great range.

Great stuff. The game’s not officially out yet and there’s already so much to mull over.

Zangief is such a buff bastard in this game… :stuck_out_tongue: His Lariat doesnt have a hitbox in the back. And you need to do autocorrect to kill crossups and crosstatsu(meaning you gotta wait untill gief is turning around :slight_smile:
