In the Lab...X_Sword Thread

Excellent. Appreciate the feedback.

You definitely have the drawing skill part covered so that’s a non-issue in the something missing part imo.

The only thing I see missing is any form of interesting story elements in your drawings. Pretty much all of them are just a well crafted and detailed pose and that’s about it. They don’t particularly show anything or do anything that sticks in your mind after looking at the picture. By story I don’t mean anything extravagant, story can be as simple as holding something or looking at something. Then you push that story element of yours as far as possible to make it as memorable and interesting as you can.

You did well with this in the last pic with the guy eating something, you have a definite story going there but it lacks direction and emphasis, your character is again just looking at the viewer. The exclamation mark over his head tells us that he is surprised by the viewer looking at him but not his not body language or his facial expression.

Wow…I never thought about story emphasis within a piece honestly. That’a new direction for me to take

I’ll agree, it’s something that’s worth venturing into. It’s especially helpful for artists with original characters to emphasize some sort of casual action to flesh out their personalities for the viewers. It creates that subtle depth that most people don’t pay attention to.

Then again, I’ve been doing mainly pinup works lately so what do I know? <_> lol

it’s been sometime lol. Thanks for checking these out

Damn, those are fantastic. Very creative and unique, especially the second one.

sorry for the late reply, but thanks a lot sir. cant wait to see the next piece of yours

I like the colors in the 3rd one. nice!

Thanks man. I had fun hours on that one. I love learning the digital programz.

I wanted to try my hand at incorporating a texture in the background. It doesn’t stand strong, but I’m sure my next textured piece will have more depth opacity wise, Teeth Sorcerer.

This sketch is so damn bright! I need some tips with the cel shade style.I shouldve paid more attention to this style since its pretty fun to do

You’re using digital now? For cel-shade style, try painting in black and white. When you’re done painting, create a new layer, set the blending to Color, and add your flat colors. Look at the stickied thread on value painting. And maybe reference Shinkiro’s art for TvC and MvC3 and etc.

EDIT: oops, fixed

Yeah haha i’m new to this. I think PS is a bunch of fun!I gotta learn about the pen tool because I’m aiming to have cleaner lines
I will try that filter trick! I dozed off on Shinkiros work, he’s amazing.thanks for the tips

love the way you draw figures! love the extreme foreshortening on the legs. very unique!

Thanks a ton. Those lines you have on your portfolio site are crazy clean. All digital?

np.
the majority of them are done traditionally. i think i’m too retarded to learn how to digitally ink lol

My first Studio Bones joint on PS, inspired by LeSean Thomas/Samurai Champloo/Sword of the Stranger. Hidemaro, the Song Ronin.

Still in the lab with the Studio Bones. This character fits in the same story as the character trio(along with the Pumpkin head dude) in the earlier posting. He is apart of something called the “Strider Force”, which is like a Rent-a-Cop guild, but in a maniacal and mystical place known as “Problem City”(i’ll post more about it). I think the coloring is “too busy”.Any and all criticism will be welcome and practiced

WOW, you’ve really come along way since then! Your PS skills are very clean and professional looking, It really brings out your style more, I can’t believe you’ve just now started using it! Glad to see you’re transitioning well! I always knew once you’d hit digital we’d see something really amazing from you and it looks like you’re getting there. Also, great influences and musical taste.
