There is not a single eSports organization that is even close to ‘mainstream’.
Nobody outside of the communities represented in their leagues even knows that they exist.

I sure do hope that the Model Railroad Operators Alliance can save the Slotcar Racing Community from obscurity, though!

SF2 doesn’t have 100% combos off low short

Since when was the quality and decency of a game always based on a community now? I see people displeased with games because of the people who play them…Ummm, what the hell has gaming come to now? Did I miss something? Am I supposed to NOT enjoy WOW because it’s know to be an unhealthy and addicting game catered to losers?( I don’t play WOW, just stating an example)

I believe it has more to do with what is new and how it matters to each fighting game community because that is pretty much how it is divided into. SSF4 AE and MVC3 racked up the most views on stream because they were both capcom games that attraced an equal large number of capcom fans while the rest who came to watch the others either watched or did not care because it was not a major tournament for their own game. MK9 has had better tournaments than Evo because not all the best players showed up in this one. I’m sure the same applies to Tekken and BB. Why does everyone talk as if whatever Evo shows in the big screen reflects on the fighting game community itself and what everyone believe is good? There are so many other tournaments that are focused on certain games that matter only to games other than capcom or naything mainstream like guilty gear, TVC, ST, etc. Evo is sponsored to cater to certain games, consoles, etc. It is not made for every kind of community believe it or not. Hell, even smash players did not give a shit because there are huge smash tournaments that they can watch where hundreds fly across the country just to attend.

I only see EVO as a big capcom tournament now. I don’t see why people are even debating about this. The quality of players have changed ever since the decline of the Arcade scene. Now we are in the era of the console/online scene. This is probably why the older players are displeased.

Starcraft is one of the most popular games on the market right now for regular consumers, and with such a competitive integreted community, it is very close to mainstream. Not only that, but they were broadcasting MLG in an upscale expensive resteraunt in newport beach. So Starcraft is realtively close to mainstream in the US.

And in Korea, they have three deficated channels to it, and it’s the most watched sport there. It’s the “national sport of Korea” unofficially. It’s mainstream there.

So, to contradict you, KESPA and Starcraft are already mainstream.

Im kinda surprised noone has posted this yet

I don’t care about MLG and all that esport talk, esport??!! I fucking hate that term

the only problem fighting games face is the bias most people have with fighting games, Capcom is not the only company releasing FGs you know. What will happen if capcom stop releasing FGs, everyone will play the same shit for another 10 years, not a bad thing imo but we should also support the companies that care about us. Snk, ASW haven’t stopped releasing FGs, there’s melty blood, arcana heart and all those doujins, and it’s not just now years before sf4 we all had those available but nobody played 'em cause they’re not capcom games, SF4 didn’t revive the genre even though people likes to think that.

Ask how SNK fans felt in the 5 year period of 2005-2010.
Or Melty Blood fans when the game has no release on current Gen consoles or even a localization.
Revival or not, SF4 was easily available to everyone.

if the people that played those anime fighters weren’t just dorks/low lifes I think more people would be open minded to them.

an inaccurate generalization imo
and you have to admit, many people dont play many of the games out on the market because they arent made by capcom or should i just say, they arent SF or MVC

probably. its just from personal experience in socal. I used to play Melty Blood and I enjoyed the game, but the more I got exposed to the MB scene the less I liked it. Tournaments felt more like anime fan meetups.

No I think its just the aesthetic that gives the reason why people wont play them. Melty Blood & Arcana heart aren’t as scrubby as the more popular games but they get turned down cause you know… look at them…

I’ll play any fighter as long as it plays good.

I get where Pherai is coming from, but to the general public, all gamers are dorks/low lifes. Maybe we can stop attaching that label to each other inside the community, but I doubt the outside view is ever going to change.

However, there’s a difference between being a nerd and dressing with some jeans and a nice ironed button shirt open with a badass t-shirt than looking dirty; basically looking like a homeless rapist-in-training.

Not trying to hate, but that’s what I see.

So dressing like a pedophile-in-training is better?

:wink2:

you’re right to an extent but the reality is most people will bitch about anything: melty no state side release, arcana?lolis, GG too dificult, kof? is not SF.

that mentality needs to stop

I think that having to bring out a PS2 to play a non-current release of a Japan only game is as valid a complaint as it gets.

I don’t really see anything wrong with rejecting a game for not liking the aesthetics. It’s part of the experience.

I’ve been a member here for only about a year and I only really got into fighting games when Super came out. I did play older games before that but very casually. I just wanna say that please don’t hate the new guys. My main games are AE and MVC3 but I’m open to try anything and do enjoy a lot of the ‘better’ games (3S, GG, ST etc.). I’m also slowly building a community in my area where there really isn’t one. So not all of us are entirely worthless, at least I don’t think so.

I think one of the problems in introducing newer players to different, non-mainstream games is the way some people present themselves. If you know that I mainly play SSF4 and Marvel and then come up to me saying that those games suck ass and I should play 3S/GG/whatever instead, I’m probably going to say no. If you’re nice about it and are willing to teach new players, you’re probably going to convince at least a few people to try your game. Of course there are some people that’ll just keep on hating no matter what you do or say but those aren’t the people you’d even want in your community, right?

This discussion should probably be in a seperate thread…

Some of you guys are taking video games way too seriously. Video games are about fun, but that basic idea seems to be gone for naught today on SRK.

Many of you also need to stop with the petty name-calling amongst yourselves. Gaming is a nerdy activity - it doesn’t matter what the hell you play. If you want to prove your manhood, you do it outside the avenue of pressing buttons in front of monitors.

Dorks I’m fine with, since we’re all nerds / dorks / dweebs / geeks to some extent just by being on here.

Low life, however, I’m not. That’s a bit much, and too malicious of a term to use.
