"I'm not Gouken..." Oni General Discussion Thread

air tatsu crossup and air dash mixup

S.hk kara throw is the one I use.

Anyone else thinking his Ultra 2 is going to be the ultra of most use? It doesn’t do as much damage as his fireball as a combo ender but Oni does good damage anyways, and that 525 damage is just too damn good of an AA and a general punish to pass up.

Imo that’s just too damn much for any ultra that isn’t 720.

Seems like his nj.mp or maybe it was nj. down mp, has ground spike properties.

What the hell is ground spike properties?

Lol, I don’t know what to call it, but thing codys neutral fierce does. “slam”?

it knocks down (not sure hard knockdown or not though)

edit:
it doesnt knockdown if hit opp on the ground
s.hk can knockdown opp in the air (similar to viper’s)

f.mk on counter hit can be linked into srk.

f+HP can be FADC’ed. I didn’t know that.

Also, I’ve been noticing that his ground pound is really easy to avoid (even as a meaty) just by backdashing.

Does Oni have any good escape options? His backdash seems awful, he can’t FADC his SRK on block… I think he’s a lot of fun to play but I’m trying to figure out if he’s worth putting time in to really learn, and without a good option for getting out of trouble I see Oni having a hard time without setting the pace of the match early on and holding onto it throughout.

A dragon punch is a dragon punch. They were powerful long before FADC’s could make them safe. He’s not Akuma, Oni can take a hit, just don’t guess wrong twice.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but considering every other special in the game that is FADC-able on hit is also FADC-able on block, it would just make sense for his to be the same, that’s all.

If you know that they’re gonna backdash the ground pound, why would you continue to use it? They’re not reacting to it, they’re expecting it. It’s a good and fast move, but it can’t be used for every situation and yeah he can’t FADC his SRK on block, that just means you have to be more careful when using it.

I main Gouken in super. I have to deal with his bad close-range defense all the time, i’m used to it and i don’t mind. Since I will main Oni in AE, i am a bit more prepared for his shortcomings. So, if his cons outweigh his pros in your mind, then he may not be the right character for you.

Stupid analogy, this is SF4 we’re talking about aka Lame Fighter4 aka Downback Fighter 4, you get the idea…

The point is Focus Attacks weren’t in any other SF game before this, DPs were never safe ever, now with the cost of 2 bars…POOF no risk in mashing, just spending 2 bars…and the mashing/reversaling wasn’t as much a threat as it is in SF4…Not being able to FADC a DP on block is pretty big for a game like SF4 if you ask me, especially for a character that doesn’t seem to have many other options on defense.

Well then don’t worry about Oni. Use someone else.

I don’t plan on and never planned on using him, I think he’s gonna be a pretty bad character.

aww really? say it ain’t so! anyway…

did anyone see the mp.air-dash being used to jump over and punish evil ryu’s SRK in one of the Oni vids?

the thing with the air dash thing, especially if you plan to make your opponent whiff something and punish it, if they did nothing, chances are you’ll get punished hard on the air dash recovery.

Yeah true, but any bait with any character can eventually backfire. You guys should really stop looking at the bad sides to everything.

its only fair to weigh the pros and cons of your options… somehow youre being too defensive of this character.

I think the air backdash is much better for baiting DP’s. It’s safer. You’ll at least be able to punish with a sweep or f+hp and if they do nothing, you’re at least a good distance away so that at best they can’t punish and at worst they can’t start a full fat combo on you.

Having a 3-frame, even if not FADCable, DP is still ages better than the wake up options of most of the cast.
