Nidhogg is hella good and so is Divekick. I didn’t like the rebalancing too much in Divekick but the game is loads of fun to play.
And you know, Smash has a lot of that too. It just isn’t really related to the type of stuff happening in the FGC. That dumb ass Super Friends video really fucked up the convo. “Fighting games have match ups and frame data.” jesus fuck, Starcraft has match ups and frame data. Then they said a bunch of other silly shit too and here we are.
But saying its an FG is like saying Megaman Boss fights are a fighting game. Somebody at capcom definitely noticed and made a couple of games based on that idea, but nobody is saying that fighting the 8 robot masters in a row is the arcade mode of a fighting game (even though there was an arcade game where its literally a boss rush mode, pretty cool too).
If we’re gonna mangle games to be 1v1, you start moving away from what a fighting game sets out to do from the jump. Not only that, you start moved FGC culture away from certain important key aspects i.e. trying to play the game as intact as possible. The idea of arcade mode and accepting and adapting to the game as they were was a massive cultural and philosophical high point of the FGC. The way smash made itself a game stood against those core ideas.
But all the Smasher games (games where you win by knocking the opponent out of a platform) are awesome because they are something new. They should’ve never attached themselves and forced that argument because they did something different. Melee kids found the joy of 1v1 gaming in their own special way and its great for them. But they did it in some weird goofy way and I’m glad they had a similar experience to what SF2 was for our gen. So they should explore what it means that their games are different, have different rules because they were made for 4 players and do what they did: develop a different way to discuss games from us because they were doing something different.
Being different is way more important than hamfistedly forcing themselves into an unrelated culture for the sake of it. But smash as a scene is wack. The fact they only play smash and leave all the other similar games high and dry is some bullshit. If they aren’t gonna run FGC games, they could try and give Brawlhala, Rivals of Aether, Brawl Out and some of the other some space to grow. These Knock Out Smasher can live happy being their own thing. But for some reason saying all these things gets people all up in a bunch. So Games in our scene gotta eat a dick so Smash Kids can be happy.
Yeah well fuck all that.

If Smash didn’t have those fuckball random elements or if they were part of settings you could actually turn off, I’d be more open to calling it a fighter.
They are really hit or miss, but as a whole, yeah they are wack af. I’ve met lots of great dudes from the smash scene that come out to our locals and even though they play almost exclusively smash games, they are just kids that like their game and being around other people. I feel like the smash scene gets painted this broad stroke as being full of stinky, whiny, dumbasses by the fgc which is just so ironic.

The fact the smash scene cried for years to get into Evo (even though they were just a gimmick game like Mario Kart and Halo one year) and that they cant just enjoy doing theor own thing without habing to yell for a decade plus how much of a fighting game they are just proves that they are whiny nutters.
Dudes are so “FGC” that smash boards doesnt have boards for T7 or SF5. So insanely FGC that the overwhelmong majority of their tournaments dont host any FGC games.
But SRK needed smash subforums and Evo ran 2 smash games for years. Oh and people in this thread have defend that bullshit.
Man, FOH. I’m in SRK to talk about FGs and gotta hear about smash, thats dumb.
Not taking any sides here as I can’t have an opinion on if it’s a fighter or not, but didn’t the developer of smash say it WASN’T a fighter?

Sakurai obviously grew up with fighting games, liked some of the ideas and created a new style of multiplayer games incorporating some concepts of it.
You can tell he didnt set out to do any of the things the games he played in arcades did, which is why its a 4 player game that does a lot of wild stuff.
Which is why he told the world it wasnt a fighting game. But then the smash scene cried about it and Triforce called Reggie and now shits all fucked up.

Not disagreeing with you here cause I share the same feelings, but the FGC is whiny about plenty of things in and outside of the games we play. That was the point I was trying to get across.

He is a KOF player, and from what I read one of the main inspiration behind smash was so there was a way 2 people could fight at once if they wanted and support each other also so they didn’t have to wait to play.

That and he wanted to make have that feeling like when you picked up your toys and made them fight each other.
Imagine building a game around that joyous feeling and you accidentally create smashers who tear apart this amazing video game experience by turning 90% of it off.

That is the ugliest thing I have seen in fighting games in a long while. The fact it’s on Blanka is even worse.
