Idea: Transformers (G1) 2d-fighter

Any game that comes out that plays like Mvc2 will prob make money. It could be the smurfs vs fagelrock and it would make money if it played like mvc2…

I would play that shit!!!

Give them autoguard? That is for the auto transformations. I think the way to deal with it by making a transformation bar that allows u to change everytime it says it’s ok. But the problem of characters like Autobots that only transform into cars is big thr only way they could do something besides ramping ur opponent is incress speed and abilty to dodge(changing planes?) Still I would love to see a game about it. It would be kick ass if the assit would go likes this Starscream does a super assite Megatron enters and trasnform into a gun or whatever and Starscream shoot with Megatron in his gun state.

I like that idea, those Super assists could solve some transformations problems (see Megatron example above).

some more:

  • Megatron could call in a airstrike by Starscream (or other seekers).
  • Most of the autobots could call in buddy to ram them in car-mode

This generally comes over with the Soundwave assists I posted before.

A G1 Transformers fighting game could be very successful and I would love to see it. Something to tone down frequent use of guns would be an overheating concept, certain characters would probably have more firepower than others, and the ones with lesser could do more shots before overheating, maybe something like an energon meter. Frequent single button shooting would be like fighting a bunch of Hyper Megamans with one button megabusters and that would be annoying even if everyone could do it, but probably something similar to the way Cable fires would be good, 5 shots then the recovery. Transformations would be tough to deal with, I wouldn’t like to see everyone have something like a temporary powered up mode, or beat planes and rush drills (only comparison I can think of off hand) I could picture Star Scream having an air raid move/super where maybe othe later jets like Thrust Ramjet and Dirge fly out, cause Thundercracker and Skywarp have more personality than they do. There might be a problem with character sizes, but the concept of a character like Sentinel, who is really supposed to be a lot bigger, was downsized for playability, and completely designed on top of that, but if you look at Cyber Akuma in MvSF, the character is merely a representation of what I assume is that giant robot Cyclops is blasting in his ending, I never really looked into it. I wouldn’t want to see Unicron as a boss and have to fight him like Apocalypse, that would be disappointing but I don’t know how else to do it. You have tiny characters like Rumble, Frenzy, Rewind and Eject who I really think could only be good for Blaster and Soundwave assist moves like Captain Commando’s, then slightly bigger characters like Bumblebee (Decepticons have nearly no short characters), then in increasing order for examples, Prowl, Hotrod, Prime, Grimlock, Jerfire, Autobot Gestalts like Superion would probably be a main one if they used any at all, Omega Supreme, Metroplex, and Fortress Maximus. The size difference becomes insane, and they’d really have to just do conceptual differences for everyone like similarly to what was done with Sentinel. If you scaled everyone to be like Capcom, Bumblebee would be Megaman size, Prowl would be like Wolverine, Hotrod would be Ryu, Prime would be maybe Cable size, Grimlock would be Sabertooth size, Jetfire-Blackheart and now there’s really nothing you can go past cause Sentinel’s only a little bigger and that’s about the limit for resonable screen size, and it’d probably be limited to one character like that per side. Characters any bigger than Jetfire are really out of luck if they wanted to keep this anywhere near accurate representations. I’d still like to see the game happen and I think after the G1 CGI/live action movie comes out next year we’ll at least see a 3D game, but I really think a cartoon influenced G1 2D game animated by like Sammy or something would be unsane.

Matt

I think sticking transformers characters (specifically Beast War characters) in a Virtual On type engine would be more impressive.

I’ve always imagined Virtual On with Beast Wars characters. I think their design and weapons would fit into this type of engine perfectly.

my 2 cents…

Mike

The Beast Wars fighting games sucked enough, thankyouverymuch.

Tatakai was decent, for a Dynasty Warriors rip-off.

I also had this idea of a 2D transformers game ages ago. I even had a good think about it. Kind of created it in my own way. I know some of the ideas I had have been mentioned, but I’ll put them in anyway so you can see them in my way. This is what I put together:

Title: Autobots vs Deceptacons, The War for Cyberton/The Cybertronian War(Don’t ask me why, it just sprang to mind.)

I had the idea of setting it around the origional movie because it had an interesting storyline and a large veriety of characters in it. Also beacause it was made by marvel, hence the vs games(need I say more on that).

Once you come to the character select screen your introduced by a wide selection of characters from both sides (Auto. Decept.)where you can select two characters for either team. Unlike the vs games where you could mix and match your teams, the autobots and deceptacons would never willingly team up together. That’s why I’ld not alow mixed teams until the game had been completed from both sides(hence peace fully restored on Cybertron). Need I say characters that could be included, im sure you’ve all seen the movie, yes?

The super guage would be based on energon, and built up similar to pocket fighter. This would be done by knocking Energon crystals out of your oponent. Colecting the crystals would increase your super guage, where as if the player who had them knocked out of colected them back, it would increase their health slightly.

One major draw back I thaught of is the lack of vehicles they can transform into for supers. Literaly shortening the cast every time, other whise the game would be dull and boring having all the transformers doing the same thing. Well the autobots anyway, just driving into them. So I thaught up a way around it. Having an on screen clip of full animation while using the Transform super. For example: Cup activates his transform super, and the screen flashes in the way all 2D fighters seem to do, and cuts to a video clip. It then shows you Cup driving round the mountain at top speed and ramming himself into the oponent, sort of like when hot rod drives throught the stop fence. Or another. Scene cuts to hot rod spinning round in the pool of sharktecons leaving them in a stun state. I had other Ideas for supers but have already been mentioned, like the matrix for prime and megatron transforming into a gun then starscream jumps on screen and starts blasting. One idea i liked was starscream saying “My fellow deceptacons” and having all his buddy jets come on and fire a way with lazers and misiles. Also Galvatron transforming into his cannon.

What if the game had interactive backgrounds that could be used by a specific side(A/D). Take this for example: One of the stages is autobot city, Who ever is the autobots could trade all their guage(MAX) to have it transform, activating it’s cannons(remember that from the movie). Then lasting for a timed period, until other deceptacons deactivate it. That’s uless the Deceptacons deactivate it before the Autobots get the chace to transform it. Leaving it useless.

For the sub bosses, it could be Devastator for the Autobots, and Metroplex for the Deceptecons. At first I thaught having Unicron as a boss could only be done in the style of Apocolypse, but I had another Idea. In the Marvel series the screen is twice as tall. If it had the same height, unicron could be on one side from top to bottom. As he is in space, no mater what team you are you could be in fly mode being able to move anywhere alowibg you to atack his body parts(legs, arms, head). Slowly destroying him bit by bit. In the back ground there could be loads of transformers flying around blasting and distracting Unicron.

Well I can’t remember anymore, although I’m sure I had more ideas. Who mentioned starscream having unfly?, thats an awsomwe Idea.

Good idea, guys like Megatron/Galvatron should have one big single blast with some recovery time, smaller ones like Bumblebee should have some more & smaller shots before overheating. Starscream should have some kind of rapid-fire function. Having Starscream unfly is a great idea!

I think you’ll all agree that the bgm should be remixes of tunes of the cartoon.

How would you get around the transform thing anyway? Seroius lack of options, lack of vehicles.

That game did suck  …but virtual on is not the suck…it can work!!! :encore:

Took the thoughts right out of my head. It could also include FPS/FG elements as well, when it comes to close-contact battling.

Transforming could prove advantageous. In non-robot state, the characters could regain some life. Vehicle-types can maneuver around the area faster, and upon successful attack of the enemy, they can automatically transform. Jazz can have a special move where he plays his trademark ‘song’ which can cause a sonic disturbance to the opponent, allowing him to transform, or allow another player to take advantage of the opponent’s state (I’m thinking this could be a cool 4-player game). Non-vehicle robots could have the ability to camouflage/cloak themselves. For example, Soundwave/Blaster can transform into casette mode and either shrink or be undetectable to that 4-player radar thing. As an added bonus, they can become the casette-assist(like Laserbeak) for the express purpose of launching a single attack. To counter the attack, the opponent can attack the sender (which puts sender back in control) or simply attack the assist, which again would put the sender back in control.

The bosses can be robots that can transform to become 1 robot, like the Constructicons. They will fight you simultaneously. They will start out in seperate parts of the fighting area, with the intent on uniting with each other in a random location of the arena (to form Devastator) while at the same time fighting you. When they unite, they will return to full power.

Just some ideas…

Transformations might have to be limited to supers in most cases, or a temporary thing, like flight mode for Starscream, maybe have flight mode normal still take regular damage, but another flight mode as the jet and take more damage, but be able to do more damage if used properly. Megatron super with a random Decepticon jumping out and catching him would infact be awesome. I can picture a lot of set up supers like Servbots Lunch Rush and stuff, where you do an attack to start it up and then just nail them, but ramming supers would be stupid as hell for everyone, so limit that to Prime and stuff. Overall I think it’d have to be a 2 parter, first game would be all the first 2 season main stays, and then the second would be based off the movie and add those characters. There’s a lot of fans of the American series who like the old characters, like I know GosBroDansFan loves Wheeljack and he’s a pretty obscure character to have as a favorite. Prime, Megatron, Superion, Devastator, Iron Hide, Soundwave, Star Scream, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Brawn, Blaster, Shockwave, maybe throw in some hiddens like Omega Supreme, Jetfire, Tryps, and Metroplex. And in a second game, eliminate a lot of the lesser characters, have Galvatron and Rodimus a powerup form for Megatron and Hotrod, throw in Kup, Blurr, Springer, Cyclonus, Scourge, Fort Max, Scorp, Unicron, a few Dinobots, the Insecticons maybe Bruticus, Predaking, Defensor and Computron. A lot of characters to work with, a lot of animation, a lot of potential to be cool. It’d probably be a good idea to cell shade everyone, that way all they would really need to do is drawn one frame at 360 degrees, or however they go about it, 3D generate, and then animate everything and it’d still look cartoon like. I wouldn’t want to see glossed over 3D characters that look the the equivalent of those 3D X-men games, I’d want true to cartoon form. Ah to dream.

Matt

Yeah, like leave the transform for your main character, and have none for your partner. I don know about cell shaded, 2D would be better.

Why the insectacons, they stink. Galvatron and Starscream would rock the whole cast.

It wouldn’t make sense to limit the characters with unfly, when all deceptacons can do it in the cartoon. It wouldn’t make sense.

Who would you guys like to see make it? I’ld probably like capcom to make it. With their vs games, made in that style would rock. Aslong as they spent some decent time on the sprites.

I think Capcom or Sammy would be your best bet.

I know that, but which one would you like to make it?

Capcom, agreeing with you Demon Dash, their experience with the Vs. series would pay off big time here.

Well, if you want a horribly broken game with limitless attacks and what not, then by all means, go for it and come up with stuff, I’m just trying to think ahead because the game would be insanely broken if not balanced properly, hence the term balance. Star Scream is only effective when others do the work for him, his ego gets in the way all the time. As for the cell shading, I’m just looking at it from a sense of the easiest way to animate it with it still looking like the cartoon. Having to draw everything seems like it’s beyond the efforts of animation teams, and cell shading still looks cartoonish and you can still play a game completely 2D, the characters would just look nicer and have standard animation, solid frame rate, all the way through.

Matt

First of all, as already mentioned, there’s lots of shooting in Transformers. That gives the implication that they should be in a shooting game. Second, they transform into vehicles (mostly), which implies that a driving/flying game would be more appropriate. If you limit them to just straight melee, you miss out on a lot of the things that the Tranformers can do. Take Starscream for example. It’d be okay if he was only a jet for assist attacks, where he’d just fly by and shoot at the opponent, but again, you’re missing out on what’s really cool about Transformers: transforming.

Even though Soundwave has a mini-cassette army in his reality-warping chest, all he does is turn into a tape recorder. What’s that going to do in a fighting game? Soundwave is supposed to be for espionage and reconnaissance. If there’s none of that in the game (which there typically isn’t in fighting games), then a lot of Soundwave’s character is going to be wasted.

I only dislike the idea because I love Transformers and want to be able to do everything with them. I don’t want truncated Transformers who can’t shoot or transform but they have a bunch of special moves that are ripped off from Street Fighter. Optimus Uppercut!

If you’re dead-set on trying to make this game, at least include characters that fit the mold. Optimus Prime and Megatron have been known to go toe-to-toe with each other. Grimlock is a fan favorite who likes to get his teeth into people. Ironhide is always looking for a fight. Brawn seems specifically built for close combat. The Insecticons may be kind of mindless, but they have transformations you can actually use.

Of course some things are questionable but when I first heard of the Marvel games I was a bit sketsy about the chars. of course the like Wolverine have fighting knowledge but seeing the likes of Cyclops en Magneto doing kicks seems akward to me at first.
But the result worked, so why not for TF?

As noble and inventive your ideas are, you know that Hasbro don’t care enough to bother making a deal to get this going. If there was going to be a new TF game, it would most likely be on Energon (or even Galaxy Force)…

The only memories we have of G1 are the DVDs/VHS/Toys/Comics. And great memories they are too.
