The more Wesker and Vergil dominate online the more likely we’ll get them nerfed before the tournament season begins.
Anyone remember how much Sentinel we saw on launch?

Wesker is a good character for a beginner to learn the basics of the game with and he wants to play Virgil who is a teleporter as well. So easy character with a teleport assist based offense to start off with. Yeah his annoying to fight but the difference between a good wesker and a bad one are night and day raw teleports can be lol blown the fuck up and gun from full screen dosn’t = full combo so stop your bitching wesker can be lamed hard.
The reason why I never got good at MVC3 was due to how shit the online was and how hard it was to get a match in so I can get destroyed.
hope this new one has better netcodes. -_-
online is better but it’s harder to execute stuff so it kinda balances out lol
I don’t have the new one yet and have been playing the old one. Let me tell you, it seems that
there are more new players playing so it’s pretty easy for me to rank up.
Thanks for your thoughts on this subject everyone
My team is X-23, Ryu, and I’ve yet to really settle comfortably on a 3rd I like. Anyone have any good recommendations that would flesh out this team?
I was thinking someone to help maintain pewpew distance since X-23 certainly can’t do that, and Ryu has never given that feeling unless I spam the hyper.
Now, please avoid “zomg those characters suck!” comments. I’m not looking to become best of the best. I want to play the characters I like… and I want to at least put up a good challenge.
As I mentioned, I’m 0-8 right now… 6 of those were absolutely horrendous crushing defeats.
…but I’d feel much better about it if maybe I made them difficult wins.
ryu tatsu is good lock down for x-23 I say go for a good cover assist doom plasma or any beam assist is godly arrows are also strong task hawkeye although I think task is the better anchor of the two you could also use annti air assist doom missiles strider vijara, jam session, log trap if you feel like going that route
I’m going to keep an eye on this thread and read it for some encouragement. I was at a 15% win rate (or something sad like that) in vanilla after playing it hardcore for months, and I’m already on track to do even worse now, lol.
I’ve only been playing a couple folks from SRKlive, but it’s been… “extremely humbling”, I’ll put it that way. MvC as a series is really good at making me feel like I’m absolutely the dumbest FG player to ever be born.
But in the end, I need to suck it up and just… sit in training mode hardcore, as I did with AE in recent months. I’m avoiding online matches (save a select few people) until I really feel I have tighter execution and understand the game more, and get a grip on how to build a competent team. Once I can actually understand why I get OCV’d every five seconds, I’ll get back to losi-- I mean playing ranked matches.
@ Asrial - I picked up X-23 in Ultimate as well, and was considering running Ryu alongside her. Right now I’m still playing Shuma with her, but I don’t know how realistic that is (though in some cases I’ve made it work lol).
My third rotates. No idea. Tron got neutered so hard it hurts, and she was one of my mains… now I can barely play her it seems.
Anyhow, now I’m just bitching. :-p
Good point. The more Weskers the better in that case. Ironically, they could hit Wesker with the same nerf Sentinel got and it’d be warranted - Wesker would still be a great character at 800k HP, just not quite as stupid as he is now.
Training mode is going to help you turn 400-500k damage combos into 800k/ToD combos. It’s not going to stop characters from opening you up 5 times before you get a single opening on them. With as hard as you’re getting blown up, it seems like your biggest problem is blocking the bullshit people are throwing your way as opposed to blowing them up when you do block it.
My problem when I play now since I haven’t played vanilla since April is that while I can open people up in most games, I lose games I should win because I’m doing 550k-600k BnBs instead of the vastly more damaging variants (well that and I’m learning PW). I recognize I have to spend more time in training mode because I can do the math and see that opening up someone 5-6 times in a match should be a victory in most cases with proper execution.
But when you’re getting OCV’ed repeatedly and unable to touch the other person, it means that there are fundamental problems with your ability to block people’s bullshit, and perhaps problems with your team building in giving you tools to reverse the pressure and get people off you. If you can’t block people’s shit or open them up more than a few times in a match, it doesn’t really matter if you have crazy damage from spending a lot of time in training mode.
If I were you, I’d suck it up and keep playing matches, but playing with a careful eye on what you should be blocking. Most people online don’t have crazy good unblockable setups right now - you can block most people’s shit without a whole lot of trouble. Biggest tip I can give is that just to remember to block down/back unless something has given you a clear reason to think an overhead is coming - most people online are horrible at mixing in overheads to their block strings at a rate that they should be.
Yeah, I guess I’ll have to keep playing matches. Good points all around, I appreciate that.
I guess the first order of business is to figure out who really feels “right” to play as a team. Most games I can get away with playing my favorites, but in MvC it just doesn’t seem to work that way, lol.
The rule of this game: if you insist on picking whom you like rather than whom that work there’s a high chance of you getting blown up. Some characters are easier to use than others, the easy to use characters teach you the fundamental of the game and make you feel more comfortable with it. The not so easy to use characters have you working hard on stuff specific to those characters rather than stuff that works on every character in this game, and they increase the learning curve of this game. You also should try out every 50 characters in this game before you declare if you like them or not, it’s rather short sighted to decide on 3 characters as your favorite and pretend that the other 47 doesn’t exist.
Ryu and X23 isn’t the hardest characters to use in this game and they certainly do not suck but neither are they the easiest characters to use. If you insist on sticking with them I can recommend a few teams for you. X23/Ryu/Spencer is a decent combination, Spencer’s slant shot assist is the best reset tool in this game and X23 benefits greatly from it. You can also try X23/Deadpool/Ryu, Deadpool is BFF with X23 and the 2 of them have great synergy. X23/Ryu/Sentinel is another possibility, both X23 and Ryu work well with the drones. And of course any team can have Wesker as anchor and X23/Ryu/Wesker is a solid team. Just try them and see which one you like the most.
Even if you lose it doesn’t mean your not getting better. If you look at and analyze the situations on loses you suffer you’ll come out a better player each time. Take me for example, i’m not that great and i know it but i do want to improve because like so many people here i wanna play competitively. I’m running Ghost Rider, Tron, and Doom. It started that I got crushed by anyone who super jumped over my attacks and beat me down, so i learned my anti-air options, then i couldn’t handle projectiles, learned options against that so on and so forth.
Eventually you will see progress somewhere, recently i went to my friend’s out for some casual UMvC and they asked me to play my team, in doing so I completely obliterated them and yet can’t seem to win online. I figure eventually I’m going to get to the point that i will take those wins. Remember you can’t be seasoned without some salt.
Hah! That’s awesome
i lost for like 3 months when i 1st started sf4. i still consider myself a scrub but i can still beat a lot of people without super fancy combos =p
Heck in gears 3 i havnt played a fps in 5 years (besides gears and story fps) that i died so much for 2 months. kids were cussing and junk that i sucked so bad. now i still suck but not dirt bottem ruining the game for everyone else hehe.
wow pvp same thing. evne with gear ya had to just learn how to do shit hehe.
one thing i learned tho is to just not zombi play shit, play a few rounds, have fun, and when ya really start sucking do something else becuase you’re just not going to learn much. over time tho it sinks in and just get more of the fel of it =p
pick 3 easy top tier characters.
I can’t tell you how long that will take. That being said, play in some lobbies. Stay away from ranked for now. Player matches, if you’re that bad, people probably won’t play much. I always like facing newbies in lobbies, especially when it’s someone who looks like they’re trying to learn. Watch what the people that are winning do, and learn from it.
As for tips, pushblock as much as you can. 75% of the online bs can be avoided by pushblocking. I can’t stress this enough. Also, in general, learn what to pushblock and what not to. For example, you’d want to pushblock Amaterasu’s ground strings, but not things that are punishable. Pushblocking puts you in additional blockstun, so don’t expect to punish stuff after it.
Try to learn to airgrab, also. If your team can combo off an airgrab, then by all means, go for it. Learn to punish approach attempts with superjump > airgrab. This is something that will come in handy in the future, especially against the likes of Taskmaster and Dante (punishing Web Swing and teleport).
Try to mix up the opponent as much as possible. People never block. If you can get in some high/lows or some left/rights, you’ll start opening people up like crazy. If you can’t do that stuff, try to stay on top of them.
Finally, if you’re on PSN, feel free to send me a message, and I’ll add you and drop a few pointers here and there. I always enjoy helping new people learn the game
This. Like the brain dead easymode one in this dudes avatar.
Loud and proud. Wesker is the best character in this game and there’s nothing he can’t do.
