I am 12 and what is this?

Had to shorten the quote :stuck_out_tongue: Thank you SO MUCH for all the friendly advice - I’ll read through everything now
Have no fear, I won’t give up >:]

It’s a shame it seems so difficult to really get into fighting games - you really have to hone your skills and know your stuff :3

And I want a fight stick, but don’t really know which one to get - they all seem really expensive (Over £200!?!?! / $250ish) and all I really want is a £30 one - are there any you know of that are cheaper? I’m not exactly pro yet, so dont need a chuck norris’ first edition platinum coated stick or anything xD

Thanks, will check the DangerRoom out  also, let me know when you get your gold back
Bnb = bread and butter right? Like the easy, basic stuff?

@DavidKong – I have already watched the hyper guides, and although they were OK, they didn;t really teach me HOW to do anything - they just showed me that I could :3 For example, the combos one shows lots of different combos for each character, but I couldn’t help but wonder how I was going to actually transfer that into the game :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll have a read up on the characters I use in their respective forums too

Thanks all!

EDIT – What are Footsies? :3

in a very general sense, footsies refer to the use of normals at mid range on the ground, and using your normals to beat your opponents. at advanced levels, it gets way more complicated. this is one of the most important and hardest to master aspects of some 2D fighters, like street fighter. but because of the air mobility in mvc3 with super jumps, double/triple jumps, air dashes, teleports, etc., footsies kinda get thrown out the window. but in general, knowledge about footsies leads to knowledge about in depth game mechanics, so it’s great info to know. i guess, once you understand why footsies don’t really matter in mvc, you’ll understand mvc haha

and about buying a cheap stick, just to warn you, they’re cheap for a reason. it’s painful to shell out all the money for a madcatz TE or a hori EX, but from my experience, a cheap stick will simply not hold up at a competitive level. i’ve bought cheap sticks to start out with as well, and i just eventually ended up buying the expensive ones later on anyways. but, that’s just my experience. do whatever you feel will be productive for you.

EDIT: actually, footsies DO matter in a sentinel mirror match, lol

Gotta agree with david. I bought the Madcatz SE fightstick thinking that it would be enough for me. Fast-forward 2 years later and now I own 3 TE sticks!

Madcatz just released their Brawl sticks for $80. The parts aren’t exactly what most of us here use, which are Sanwa parts, but they should be decent. If the buttons/joystick on yours breaks, you would then need to mod the stick with either Sanwa/Seimitsu parts. It’s a fairly simple process though.

The cheapest TE you can buy right now is the Blazblue TE on Amazon.com
Amazon.com: BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Fightstick Tournament Limited Edition: Xbox 360: Video Games
The TE uses Sanwa parts right out the box, so you can expect this stick to work for years on end.

If you are still unsure, we have an Arcade Stick FAQ in the Tech Talk forums:
http://shoryuken.com/f177/absolute-noobie-thread-now-more-faq-220429/

BTW I watched one of your MVC3 vids. You are one wacky British dude lol.
And I <3 Minecraft too!

Ah ok, so the ‘simple’ moves so to speak - Normals as in Kicks, Punches, etc?

As for fight sticks, the Mad Catz one you linked was £180 in the UK :L Mad Catz Official Street Fighter IV Arcade Fight Stick - Tournament Edition Round 2 (Xbox 360): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

There is a stick that I have seen advertised for £40 but I don’t know if It’s completely awful or not. If I find a link, I will post.
I also found this stick: BlazBlue Xbox 360 Arcade Stick Games Accessories | TheHut.com
Out of stock, a little more expensive, but might be good? I honestly don’t know :3

Also, from experience with CoD merchandise, all stuff made by Mad Catz breaks in about a week - is it the same with Fight sticks? :3

Thanks for teh info though! Haven’t got many positive responses on this forum so far, other than from you and a few others.

Lololol thanks for watching my videos  I got a very basic MvC3 tutorial on PixelEnemy even though I hardly know anything about the game xD Here it is:
I really need feedback on my MvC3 videos, seeing as I am so new to it all - should I go through the Missions, or what? :3 Really enjoying the game though

EDIT: I am getting completely destroyed by my friend using Wesker’s Super in which he dashes everywhere across the screen. Seems unblockable to me so far xD Guess there’s a hell of a lot for me to learn :stuck_out_tongue:

The Hori EX2 sticks like the one you linked are not as good as those that have Sanwa/Seimitsu parts because the stock buttons and joystick feel more stiff and less sensitive. They are also a pain to mod if they are in need of repair. The buttons are soldered directly onto the PCB. If you don’t have experience in soldering I’d steer clear from it. The EX2 is also smaller and lighter than your average stick, so it can wobble around if you play on a flat surface. Not to mention that it is so small that there isn’t a lot of room to rest your hands on.

I’d say getting a TE is a worthy investment. Madcatz always has a sale during a major tournament so you can wait to use a discount code during PowerUp 2011 on the official Madcatz Store. If you can’t then I’d say the Brawl Stick is your best bet. It comes the closest in replicating the feel of Sanwa buttons and joystick. It uses Quick Disconnects so modding is a breeze.

As for your MVC3 vids, I’d recommend explaining how to cancel combos into hypers, and canceling combos into specials that can actually extend combos. A good example of this V. Joe. Instead of chaining normals into :s:, I can do Groovy Upper :m: and afterwards link (not chain) into air :h:, then into an entirely different air combo that isn’t possible by just launching with :s:. The longer your combo is, the less damage it will do. This is called damage scaling. However you still build meter for every hit you, so it’s up to you to decide when it’s good time for short or long combos.

Just a heads up. I know a THC looks badass and everything, but it’s generally not a good thing to do in a match because it uses 3 bars of meter and leaves all 3 of your characters vulnerable to to being punished by the opponent if it is blocked. DHCing would be better option because it does more damage and is a safer way to tag a partner in (raw tagging is not safe on whiff and can be punished by baiting or even on reaction).

Yes, definitely try Mission Mode because it does teach you specific combos for characters or help implement assists into your combos. A lot of the advanced mission mode combos are actually variations of bnbs.

Also explain advanced movement mechanics like superjumping, airdashing, wavedashing (canceling dashes into crouches repeatedly) and jump canceling. Defense mechanics like pushblocking and crossover counters. Mix ups like I’ve mentioned before are switching up how you attack or where you attack from. When you did Deadpool’s :f:+:m: in your video, that was a actually an overhead attack. If the opponent was blocking low, he would’ve gotten hit. The point is that you have setup your attacks when trying to go in for combos, otherwise the opponent will predict what you will do like patterns in your movement.

Zoning is the opposite of rushing down your opponent, so you should cover that as well.

Oh and don’t forget X-factor. You can cancel pretty much anything into XF (even by blocking) and it’s properties change matches entirely.

You don’t want the BlazBlue stick. It’s just an EX2 with BlazBlue art. EX2s are garbage.

Okily dokily, which stick would you recommend?

Right. That was a rather large post, and I don’t want to forget anything, so I’m just going to spill below :stuck_out_tongue:

Stick 1: GameShark? Store - Street Fighter IV Xbox 360
Stick 2: GameShark? Store - Street Fighter IV Xbox 360
Stick 3: Comic Con Fight Stick (Sold out in store I looked in)

They are the sticks on the Mad Catz site. Am I right in thinking they are the ones you are suggesting? If so, which one?
I think I’m just going to spend the money on this. Assuming that the stick works with other games, not just MvC3, I’d prefer to be paying for something that will last, is good quality, and “easy to mod”, not that I know how to, or why I would want to xD
Will reply about the MvC3 videos tomorrow… really need to get the hang of OTGs and wall bounces - I can do basic combos fine for now but can’t ever seem to pull of a successful OTG to continue my combo Dx

Got to go to bed now, it’s midnight here :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks again

The Tournament Editions like the ones you linked. All the TEs are the same quality, just with different art/color schemes. The Super TE is the same as the regular TEs but a bit smaller. Just get whichever you like the look of best.

You may want to check Ebay, the Trading Outlet, or local game stores for cheaper ones, the ones you linked are pretty overpriced. You can also wait for them to run a sale, which they do almost monthly. It’s usually pretty easy to find one around here for $100-$120 USD.

As sticks go, I found these:

Stick 1: GameShark? Store - Street Fighter IV Xbox 360
Stick 2: GameShark? Store - Street Fighter IV Xbox 360
Stick 3: Comic Con Fight Stick (Sold out in store I looked in)

As for youtube stuff:

I think I will spend an entire video explaining X Factor - should take me two or three minutes, which is fine for a videos.
I’ll also do an entire video on Damage Scaling, once I know more about it :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, in my general online games, I will stop mashing - I used to pretty much have no idea how to play, but now can hold down a pretty good game; I’ve learned a lot faster than I thought I would, and don;t mash too much now. Just a question of grinding some combos in mission or training mode, and then transferring it to online :stuck_out_tongue: What do you think of making an entire video on one combo?
As long as I have made it up myself, it should be good, right? Because I have seen quite a few videos on Youtube of people just doing one combo, and the video is really popular

THC - Team Hyper Combo? I never do that anymore - I only used to do it because I didn’t know how to super without hitting my triggers on the back of my controller - I didn’t realise what to do then, but I do now

Not sure what DHC means, but i’m assuming it basically means doing a hyper, then canceling into another hyper? If so, that’s pretty much what I do now. Works much better, damage and combo wise. Cancelling a hyper into X factor into another hyper seems to work wonders too :stuck_out_tongue:

I am constantly trying missions, and failing miserably. I can hit the moves, but as soon as I have to hit more than 5 or 6 moves, I just freeze up and cant continue the combo - I just can’t remember what comes next :L

Still really struggling with OTGs and I have no idea why - They come out, but just don’t hit. For example, deadpool’s Katanarama H is an OTG move as far as I know, however it doesnt really do anything! Sometimes, it does hit, but I then cannot continue the combo :frowning:

Still so much for me to learn :stuck_out_tongue:

I know how to SuperJump, Dash, and air dash. I haven’t come across wavedashing or jump canceling yet, but will try them out (how do you jump cancel? Same as wavedashing, by canceling into a crouch?) Also not sure how to pushblock or crossover counter :S Is there any way around a push block> When used against me online, I just fly backwards, and cant hit them :S

Thanks!!!

Also, looking for people who know their stuff about MvC3 to do a couple of dual commentaries with - if you, or anyone else, is interested, has Skype, and can speak reasonably clearly, let me know

DHC = Delayed Hyper Combo. You are right as to what it is.

For Deadpools OTG you have to do SRK + H and then H again for the wallbounce. The first hit bounces off the ground, the second hit bounces off the wall so you can re-launch.

SRK + H, H

Some characters like Chun can cancel normals into jumps. Just hit the attack (like Down + H) and then hold up and you can jump cancel it. You can also jump cancel all ground dashes AFAIK and some other normals here and there like Tron’s Forward + M flame.

You pushblock by hitting two attack buttons while blocking an attack. It pushes the attacker away from you. Make sure you don’t press it during a gap in their normals though, because you’ll just stick out a normal instead and get hit. Some characters have ways to deal with pushblock, but it’s character specific. In general any move that pushes you forward (Tron’s Drill, Chun’s Spinning Bird Kick, Zero’s Forward + H) will mitigate the effect and let you stay on them. One extremely important thing to understand is that you CANNOT pushblock assist attacks. This is important for rushdown characters specifically, because calling a “lockdown” assist like Chun’s Lightning Legs, Doom’s Molecular Shield, or Sent’s Drones will keep them in a vulnerable position while getting hit by the assists. Without a good assist characters like Zero, Wolverine, and Magneto are much weaker.

To crossover counter you just hit Forward + Assist (whichever character you want to counter with) while in block stun. Extremely useful for teams that have characters like Haggar or Tron on them. Also works well with Sentinel because he can air super before he hits the ground.
