I’ve been playing Hugo all afternoon and he’s certainly a lot of fun, even if I’m not very good.
One thing I have been finding is that meat squasher seems to be a bit temperamental online, it come out fine offline in training mode but online it refuses to come out sometimes. My best guess is because of his move overlaps it has less leniency on the input than most spds causing issues online if it doesn’t register all the inputs.
I thought I’d try him out since I’ve never really used grapplers and since he’s new it seemed worth investigating. I can’t for the life of me figure this guy out at all.
If I try to jump in, any move will get beat out. Okay, so hang back a little. Well, 9 times out of 10 I’m facing someone with a projectile (mostly Poison right now), jumping over leaves me pretty vulnerable and blocking chips so all I can really do is neutral jump if its safe enough.
When they get in close I can’t find a normal that will beat out anything, everyone is faster, better equipped and more capable at close, medium and long range than this gigantic freak. I just can’t find the strategy at all here. I think well, he’s a grappler, gotta focus on getting close and getting grabs, right? Well , whenever I do a command grab, I just get grabbed myself, or I poked out of it because they’re incredibly slow.
I pretty much only play Dhalsim so I’m used to sitting at medium range and letting the other guy make the mistakes, but this. I mean. Blah, I just can’t figure it out. Someone tell me what you’re meant to do with this guy because I frankly don’t see the point in him.
Just found out that s. LP restand from Meat Squasher works on Balrog. Did anybody else get it to work on other characters? s. LK might still be more useful if it works on the same characters, though.
Been playing Hugo few hours now. As i thought, he is just so fun character to play. The way i play Hugo is i try to be patient and use footsies like c.mk, s.mp and s.hp and giant palm brakers for nice pressure. s.hp is just SO GOOD because of that armor… Been using it for AA a lot with great success Don’t think it will hit empty jumps, but otherwise it seems to be ok. sometimes using s.mp for AA if opponent jumps from far away.
Once i get opponent down i try to do some mix ups using cross up heavy punch, empty jumps with grappler moves, c.mk, Giant palm brakers etc…
Once we get more high level hugo videos i am sure that we get much more information.
Need to try this on smaller characters, but might have a decent salvage combo from an unexpected Focus crumple into backdash. On Balrog i could do:
Focus crumple > dash cancel backwards > dash forward > LP clap > LK Backbreaker or MK Backbreaker (bit harder depending on how late the clap hit) or Megaton Press
Focus crumple > dash cancel backwards > dash forward > EX clap > EX Backbreaker or Megaton Press
Not sure yet it it works on smaller characters than Balrog. Definitely want to try it with Dhalsim now to see what the max crumple range for a full combo is on him.
Definitely practice this one, it’s not that hard, so if you choke on a crumple, don’t just settle for sweep or dash up flying ass!
Hey guys. After I’ve been doing 360s, I’ve immediately followed it up with a hard punch palm. So 360p to qcb hp. I’ve found that it’s been working incredibly well so far. The only way people have gotten out of it but blocking is backdashing, and that seems to only be characters with faster backdashes. Other than that they’re left in the juggle state. Not sure if this stuffs everything, but it’s worked out well so far.
Edit: It seems like a weird scenario. I just got swatted by Decapre’s reversal uppercut. But to test it further I tried to do it again, and I hit Decapre that time, even though she apparently did a reversal.
Do Evil Ruy and Oni’s fireball ultras have different properties to all the other ones? I’ve been testing what EX clothesline can plough through and its armour doesn’t work on those 2 but it does on all the other fireball ultras.
No, all his ground light attacks are special/super cancellable. c LP, c LK, s LK, s LP are all special-cancellable.
Ultra Throw balls-deep in the corner is rough because they change sides on you VERY fast while Hugo is still recovering. I’m still figuring stuff out, but a basic way to keep them close off a super-deep corner Ultra Throw is just to c MK them. You can also do Backbreaker, but they get flung a bit further away from you AND out of the corner.
EDIT: Better solution: If you really don’t want them out of the corner and don’t need the damage from Backbreaker or Megaton Press, you can just do super-deep corner Ultra Throw > LK Lariat. Lariat offers your most advantageous hard knockdown, so that you have time to jump over the opponent and keep their back to the corner. You can’t quite do this with c MK due to the recovery on that move compared to the knockdown from lariat.
EDIT 2: Bear in mind also if you get super-deep corner Ultra Throw and want to combo Megaton Press for the kill, you’ll have to do an SNK super motion of sorts to correct for the opponent changing sides on you. Do qcf, qcb (the way you were facing when you started the throw) + KKK with a very slight delay after recovering from the Ultra Throw, and you should get your auto-correct Megaton Press.
But really, try not to fixate on grabbing people deep in the corner with Ultra Throw. If they’re that deep and committed to blocking, use Meat Squasher or SPD instead to maintain your corner control. Save Ultra Throw for if you block a DP or something that takes them far enough out of the corner that you can get a “real” Ultra Throw combo.
I haven’t landed this many supers in one day before lmao
Also I managed to land a mp.clap, lp.clap, cr.lk, super such a nice feeling, got a couple of counter hit hp.palms too but failed to convert on any of them, I was so mad.
holy shit counter hit lvl 3 red focus does 319 damage alone
ch.lvl 3 rfa > hp.clap > mp.clap > lp.clap > cr.lp xx lk.lariat does 587 damage, I mean ch.lvl 3 rfa is totally plausible right, right? It could happen.
ch.lvl3 rfa > juggle state hp.clap > u2 = 666 damage
Wow hugo is so fun. I would play all night long if i could, but sadly not… :(. I played against my friend that’s a makoto player, it was pretty cool. AA grab is rreally good. Catching someones backdash with Clap into u2 is soooo satisfying.
I’ve tried his clapcombos, i kind press the putton for each clap 2-3 times as a timing, and it works for me.
Tried playing against a dhalsim, that was difficult lol. Thankfully, whiffing lk lariat builds ALOT of meter.
