Hugo general Thread

Good stuff. In regards to the first one, a far easier way of timing a whiffed mp clap/meaty hp clap is just to do lariat then neutral jump, then you can just buffer the clap as you start to touch the ground and it’ll always come out on the first grounded frame.

Also in the second setup, you actually have to wait a frame or two after recovering from the SPD to land meaty HP clap. If you do it immediately it will also whiff.

So if my opponent’s are using back dash to escape the pressure, can i just use FP clap (os ultra 2) to catch this universally?

Are these setups preferred over the lariat knockdown, jump forward, leap attack setups that were show in a video the other day?

I don’t know about universally, but it should catch a majority of the cast.

And all of these setups I presume are pretty interchangeable with Leap Attack if you want to get in a surprise overhead instead of Meaty FP Clap, but FP Clap has the advantage of leading to bigger damage on hit and being able to confirm easier into a hard knockdown, as well as being difficult (impossible?) to distinguish from MP Clap which can create some better mixup opportunities.

I was just testing how Focus backdash or forward dash would be vs these set-ups. You can pretty much just punish them with SPD on forward dash and Cr.Mk on backdash so they should cover that option as well

How do you guys deal with Vega? I swear I don’t know what to do against that guy at all.

i hafe problems to connect the Wallthrow with clap and backbreaker sometimes. Is it not allways the same and guaranteed combo? is it charakterspezifik?

UT > lk clap > lk bb/ex bb is universal.

UT > mp clap > lk bb/ex bb is a tight juggle on majority of the cast.

UT > ex clap > ex clap > u2 is universal

That’s good to know. Double EX Clap to U2 does insane damage.

Gotta love the M Clap/H Clap game. I wish some of those setups ended up closer to the opponent though (for OS purposes). But it’s awesome that you found all those ways to make M Clap safe from 3f reversals. I’m definitely going to try to implement that into my game… When I actually start playing I mean. lol.

I know Hugo has tools to deal with projectiles (s.HP, dd+MK, focus dash), but I’m a little puzzled on what his best jumpin is when dealing with them. (Sometimes j.HP is too unreliable)
From the frame data alone I would think j.LK is his best normal to jump over fireballs since it has 1~19 fr lower body projectile invinciblity while trading/beating normal AAs, ofcourse this doesn’t say much without seeing the actual hitboxes. j.HK on the other hand has 1~19 fr lower body projectile invinciblity, but I’m guessing it’s only good for trading with the opponent while eating the fireball. So from trial and error, what jumpin normal worked the best for you guys?

I’ve had success by treating him like a fireball character. I just walk and block his pokes for the most part and don’t play footsies with him. If Vega is dumb enough to make you block a wall dive or wall dive in general you can back breaker that shit. U2 is a given for that match.

I only played a handful of Vegas though.

I have tested this a lot yesterday and those appear to be 1 or 2 frames too slow to make L or M clap safe from 3f reversals. It’s still good vs characters with slower reversals though.

cr.mk whiff is the perfect timing. I was thinking about using HP Clap whiff just for the meter building. But unfortunately you have to manually time/delay it. Because perfect timing hp clap whiff will make the next HP Clap whiff too.

Anyways to take advantage of Hugo’s +2 on block hop kick ?

Ex Ultra throw or low lk mixup that bitch! And if hop kick hits that lk xx lariat will combo. If not you get a free +1 blocked clap after lk. In which case you can still get Ex UT or SPD. Unless he’s srk happy ofcourse.

You’re a grappler and you are + in their face. (I think it has to be more than +2 otherwise you would trade with 3f normals but I know you can true blockstring into stuff)

In every situation when you’re close to them at an advantage, it means they can’t press buttons or they get counter hit. But it also means they have 3 choices: block, reversal or ass out (backdash/jump). Blocking loses to your command throws. Reversal and assing out loses to doing literally nothing. You can just sit there and block, then punish their reversal or react to their backdashes/jumps with sweep/ex backbreaker. Or check them with s.hp or another Leap Attack (which will cover both backdash and jumps). You can also of course do an immediate cr.lk to keep them in place and prevent any backdash/jump then tick ultra throw or again, do nothing and let them hang themselves.

I think maximizing your punishes i.e. punishing reversals with 400-500+ and anti-airing for 180-300+ is the most important thing with Hugo. Because the damage from trades, s.hp and sweeps can only get you so far.

i Played 10 hours STRAIGHT of USF4 just using hugo and i feel like these are his worst match ups

Juri-I feel like i cant do a thing to her or even get near her
Ken
Guile
Sagat
Oni-Everything he does pushes you fullscreen away
Blanka
Dudley-This is my main character and he does not struggle with grapplers and he wins trades against hugos buttons

Shotos are really susceptible to Focus Dash 720. Onis like to use F+Hp any time a grappler comes close but with Hugos dash it actually isn’t too bad and definitely any trade with him is in your favor.
Blanka can never ever use blanka ball unless he wants to her a punish block/hit. However I don’t know much about this match-up unfortunately.
Sagat always wrecks grapplers so it’s nothing new for him to beat hugo.

im feeling like the gouken match up is a lot more bearable than what it was in the first couple days of launch…in other news, fuck blanka, sagat, juri, all shotos, honda, poison, and the character known by many as “guile” aka “fuck i hate this bitch ass match up and this character can eat the worlds largest bag of dicks”

I’ve actually gotten used to the Juri match-up and kind of like it more than the Poison match-up. I mean it’s not good at all, but I feel when I have her in one hit she’s in more trouble than other zoners. Projectiles aside I fucking hate vega. I have to be so deliberate with my footsies and I lose half my buttons vs him from most ranges just due to how easily he can punish them. An extremely patient yun is really annoying as well.

its crazy how hard hugo needs to work to win a round while shotos, juri, guile, sagat and others characters can literally just use One tactic to shut down all your options

With the honda matchup, LK and EX BB beat his headbutts, on blanka i think only EX BB beat his straight blanka balls, BB beats his upballs and i think u can U2 straight blanka ball on blk,not sure on this one yet, haven’t tried it yet
