I use j. MP to get over fireballs and hit the opponent. Been working for me so far.

The Juri matchup is literally unplayable.

I haven’t won a single match as Hugo today. I feel like a walking salt mine.

yesterday I finally managed to beat a gouken whom i used to lose to all the time… maybe i saved it / still have it in my battlelog, if so, im going to upload it. May be educational or helpful for some

edit:
but to stay on topic, hugo really can be tough, especially against the heavy zoners… Still have to figure out what to do against Guiles…
I mean, Juri is quite common right now, so you can get exp in the matchup… yet guiles are rare, good ones are almost nonexistent… yet even “average” guiles still beat my Hugo easily (at least it looks easy…).

I figured, it’s really just:
Always know your options!!

I tend to forget that i have cr.hk for a very fast overhead, or cr.hp for a really good antiair… st.hk is GREAT against neutraljumpers as well as easy to read/ anticipated jump ins.
It feels like im playing a limited character… but only because im not yet familiar with what he can do…
You really need a solid groundgame with hugo, most standing pokes thrown to you can be whiffpunished/ countered by cr.mk into setups for damage. And i mean… Hugo hurts… a lot.
Blocking a srk (not fadc) basically leads to 370-450 damage from Clap BnBs alone. Depending on screen position you could even punish for something around 650 damage with UT, m Clap, Ex Clap, U2.

When you get in, make it count.
A mistake I still do; not punishing hard enough… as a “former” gief main, i always punished with suplex or spd, depending if i want position or damage… With Hugo, it should always be damage. If you need to, you get perfect position through meatsquasher.

I finally got 5600 and then I ran into 2 goukens 2 juris 1 dhalsim and 1 Chun-li in a row.
Bye points, nice knowing ya. :stuck_out_tongue:

ouuuch… but hey, see the bright side, there was no Guile… ? xD

This right here, is the story of my life :(. Usually with some blankas and Vegas thrown in :frowning:

With Blanka you should just stay put and let him kill himself.

I main Poison.

I have to say came here to read up on Hugo and I happened upon this thread. I really have to say I don’t even enjoy fighting against Hugo online. Hugo has absolutely no chance at all against Poison, this is borderline 8-2 in my own opinion, a strong 7-3 for other people.

My condolences. Seriously.

I thoroughly enjoy playing Hugo so I don’t get frustrated.

Why isn’t cr.HP airborne. >.<
Wanted to do flashy against a Hakan player because I knew he was going to wake-up U1 so I thought: I usually use st.hk or cr.hk let’s try cr.hp for a change.

He U1’d me straight out of the ‘air’.

I get frustrated when i have an opponent on magic pixel. Hugo has no chip game.

EX Yoloriat? Claps?

None of these are fast enough and getting into the ranges to cancel off light attacks can get tough when your opponent hardens up.

When you want to yolo lariat or chip with ex.lariat it helps to start the attack when they’re not in a defensive crouch AND to walk forward while waiting for them to abandon their position. This is esp true for charge characters, for example when Balrog doesn’t have charge, his mobility is limited to only TAP, backdash or jump. at a certain distance, opponents can’t successfully jump away from ex.lariat or avoid it without getting chipped to death. This obv isn’t true for all characters, but for even characters with a DP, doing a DP on reaction can still lose to ex.lariat since it’ll only absorb a portion of the damage, and won’t be a reversal so it won’t break armor (except for Sagat’s powered-up DP).

A lot of this comes from my idea/opinion that there’s a time difference (and difficulty difference) in doing certain motions from certain positions and combined with reaction time and input proficiency can means that from neutral (e.g. not in hit/block stun). It’s harder to perform certain motions from certain positions. i.e. doing a reaction lp.spd to Rolento’s roll is much easier from an offensive crouch or walking forward, versus a defensive crouch or walking back. Same with a DP: it can be harder to do a DP from a defensive crouch versus an offensive crouch.

This is (kind of) similar to when Chun does a well spaced U2 to chip you out, if she does it up close and you have meter you can ex.bb out (but not U2 or U1), you can’t ex.lariat because shes’ trying to chip you out and you’ll die before you can absorb all the hits. If you jump you get tagged because Hugo’s so big and his backdash doesn’t go very far so even if you can block you get chipped out (or hit) after backdashing. GIVEN everyone can throw ex.lariat on reaction given they’ve got balls of steel.

I know this is going to come across badly, but what is BB?
I remember that being Bread and Butter combo, but ex bb???

Back Breaker… got it.

I learned a lot from watching this.

Do you guys find you’re getting taunted more when playing Hugo? Its odd for me because I don’t experience the same stuff playing other characters.

Is it sad that the closest I’ve got to winning with Hugo online is a double K.O in the final round?
