That’s still pretty damn close. And considering that the Gamecube and Melee came out at the end of 2001, aka the Christmas season, the distinction between one month and another is irrelevant. At least it was for me as I didn’t know there was a new Smash at the time, let alone the Gamecube.

I think there’s a strong possibility of it being Smash, whether or not the SRK hipsters consider it a fighter (when just about everyone else out there does). Just keep Sakurai’s ideals out, remove random tripping, and give the game actual combos instead of just DI (which is a great idea in itself).

It would certainly be a surprise if nintendo outsourced to another FG company to make the game. They have worked with capcom before, I am sure they have a producer laying around that is not niitsuma and ono.
