How was I supposed to know THAT?! moments in gaming

The colonel does tell you to look at the CD case. Of course, I checked the inventory and wondered where I was supposed to pick it up.

Most of the puzzles required the player to go from one room to the next to pull a switch or move a statue. It really doesn’t take much other than remembering what you had done in the previous rooms.

Breath of Fire for the GBA. There was this one part of the game where you had to reach the other side of the country but could only reach it from underwater. I played that shit for like 5 months and could not find where I was supposed to go. Then when I told my friend about it, he showed this one area in a volcano with a “secret entrance” which got me to where i needed to go. How the hell was I supposed to see that?

I remember I rented the game back then…

I was fucked.

In Link To The Past, having to pull the tongue on a statue in the ice temple to open the way forward. I was stuck for a very long time, and finally had to break down and ask the dude who loaned me the game what to do.

I can’t remember half of my NES, Genesis games (I think I do remember that X-Men one though), but I do remember…

FF XII - Who opened the treasure box at the beginning of the game, unknowing that you just screwed yourself out of his (Vaan) endgame weapon?

Yea.

The Zodiac Spear? Anyone could use it, and even if you did open any one of the 4 treasures (or all of them) you could get it later. Granted you had like a 1/1000 chance of getting it, so you had to abuse the RNG in the game.

In Breath of Fire III where you had to cross the dessert. You had to walk in the direction of specific constellations in the sky to leave. On top of that your max HP would go down randomly and if you went to rest it wouldn’t go back to normal. Only resting at an inn would fix your HP. In the game they tell you bring a canteen with you, but no one gives you one. It happens to be on a barrel outside of a campsite. I never noticed due to whenever you say on the world map you start at a campsite and the only thing to interact with up until that point is the other characters.

Simon’s Quest is the only thing that comes to mind right away…that part where you’re supposed to crouch next to a wall while holding a certain item… I can’t even remember what the item is, but I only knew of it when some gaming magazine or strategy guide mentioned that.

Recently, I didn’t know how to get to “Pip” in a certain quest in Dragon’s Dogma…he’s a little kid that you have to chase around to tell him something; some corrupt business guy wants to evict his family, basically. Anyway, the map showed that “Pip” was in a barn, but he wasn’t there… then I realize this little bastard somehow is on top of the building…and of course there is no ladder to get up there. I’m still not even sure if this was supposed to happen or if it’s a glitch. I then realized that a certain ice magic spell can create a stepping stone to get to a higher place… you still can’t jump directly up there from it though, so I cast the spell next to the building that was next to that barn, then I used “levitate” skill to float over to the rooftop of the barn. I think this is more satisfying though when you figure out something in a game on your own. Of course, this isn’t on the level of “uhhhh?” as that thing in Simon’s Quest with the crouching.

It’s the red crystal.

THE RED CRYSTAL GODDAMMIT!!!

…and don’t you ever forget it.

I know this has happened to me on quite a few games but the only one I can remember is the graveyard in Zelda OOT.

I thought the water temple in Zelda OOT was pretty tough.

FF12
in that dungeon where i think there was some esper…there’s this little monster/creature where its like a lil monster in a bouncing chest. all you see is eyes, a mouth or tongue inside a opened chest.
the game says giving it an item, i think a elixir would make it calm or happy…
anyhoo…i had no idea you could give enemies items like remedies and elixirs. it was by switching item target using one of the side trigger buttons.
before having to go online to resolve this mystery of how to give enemies i hit every button combo known to man with no success.
if you attack this monster it murdalizes you. just impossible to defeat. no magik or physical attack hurts it. only after giving it a exilir does it lose its immunity towards damage.
i saw lots of game over screens due to that lil bugger.
oh after learning i could give enemy monsters items…i equipped that ring…niphopalolia(mispelled-dont remember)…the ring that reverses the effects of items.
well, i could never understand why the developers made an item that reversed the effects of items since tossing a health item with it equipped made you lose hp even more…until that moment where i realized i could give items to enemies.
changed my world.
i proceeded to go all over the place with that ring equipped on fran and dish out that item remedy, which btw had a myriad of health benefits, to every freakin monster i could find…and watch them turn into easy as fuck prey. heh heh.
they would get afflicted with silence, blind, poison, you name it, they got it.
the one monster of interest were those floating skulls that carried a sickle in that zodiark esper’s dungeon…those monsters would be invisible until you reached them and had the ability to teleport long distances so you pretty much could never escape them…well,…after tossing a remedy at them with nipho ring equipped…they would go bananas and start teleporting non stop trying to avoid the inevitable which was their death since remedy had the ability to cure that 10 second countdown curse that causes you to die. well, after giving them remedy w nipho ring equipped, it caused them that curse to fall on them, so they would go bonkers teleporting to avoid the countdown since teleporting caused the countdown to be slightly delayed. so it would go 10…teleport…9…teleport…teleport…8…teleport…7…etc
as opposed to just 10 9 8 7…etc.
fun as fuck to watch em lose their shit!
one thing i could never fiqure out about that game was that sheild that if you quipped it would cause your party member to be poisoned plus some other affliction. now i thought if i equipped the nipho reversal ring that the poison would be nullified…but nope. doesn’t work. if anybody knows…let me in on how that cursed shield works.

DQ8
Darksteel Dragon. post boss. could not figure out how in blazes to kill this sob!
physical and magical attacks had no effect! none. murdered in cold blood my party a ton of times.
had to resort to checking the net…which i hate to do in rpgs since i wanna figure out puzzles myself…but this dragon mystified my ass.
found out angelo’s angel eyes was the only move my party had that damaged it.

Okami
in that windmill town, you gotta find 8 guardian dogs…there’s only 5 of the dogs in town…had no idea that the other 3 are out of town and somewhere in the okami world. now i woulda searched the other locations in the okami world for the other 3 remaining dogs if it wasn’t for the fact the game doesn’t allow you to leave the town…when you find the first 5 dogs each dog states "i’m hungry"
ok. i’d be happy to feed em like ammy is able to do with wildlife except the little “feed/bite” pop up menu never appears.
after 4 or 5 long hours of searching every inch of the town for the remaining dogs i gave up, looked up what to do online, and found out i had to feed the dogs in the same way as i would wildlife ITS JUST THAT THE DAMN GAME ASSUMES YOU’LL SOMEHOW KNOW THAT YOU HAVE THE CAPACITY TO FEED THEM WITHOUT THE FEED/BITE POP UP MENU APPEARING THAT ALWAYS ALERTS YOU THAT YOU HAVE THAT OPTION WHEN COMING ACROSS WILDLIFE!
ugh. upsetting.
after feeding the five dogs they tell you the other 3 are outta town and you gotta find em and feed em in the same way.
bad developer decision in that one small aspect of the game.

!!!
Wut!?!?!
Endgame?
Weapon!

sigh of relief. ok. i got that. phew

X-Men for the Genesis. Mojo’s stage. “Reset the computer”. Nuff said.

True Ending for Silent Hill aka how to save Cybil

I know it was designed to make you fuck up the first time (unless you read spoilers) and play it again, but c’mon man I got this item in my inventory driving me nuts for what I do with it. It’s not even a huge change really either.

It’s one thing to do that when you only have less than 10 objects to move around. between 2-3 rooms. That’s just my opinion. This game had you moving objects and dealing with objects that were moving on their own and and every room looked very similar so that made things confusing. Go back and play it again or watch a speedrun. The puzzles in this game were harder than the puzzles in The God of War series. GOW’s puzzles spanned very large areas, but you could always tell what needed to be done since every area looked different.

Every RPG has this in it.

It’s retarded.

Can’t really compare GoW with Alundra now can you?
These kind of puzzles are the ones you should expect in pretty much every rpg, especially from that era.
If you have played several psx rpg’s you should be familiar with this.
