How to wire start + select to = PS3 home button

Mine was fine. I used it last night and when I tried it today, I hit both buttons and the joystick and PS3 powered right up.

Yeah, official PS3 PCBs seem to have some pretty strange circuitry. I have just experienced the problem once, and after about 20 seconds of pressing the buttons, the problem went away. I remove the battery and ground the PCB the best I can, and the problem is still gone away. So this is pretty hard to test.

The only other solutions I have at the moment are to lower the resistance(s) or use a MOSFET. For now, I know that the base resistor needs to be at least about 20K, so instead of the 100K resistor, I’ll try 20K (actually two 10K resistors strung together) from time to time to test it. If you have an extra 100K resistor, you could install two side-by-side (in parallel) of them instead of one so that the combined resistance is 50K.

Again, sorry for the trouble. Really the only way I could have anticipated troubles was to have a computer model of the layout of the PCB, and even with that who knows.

thanks for even taking the time to check it out slagcoin

Still no problems to report. And there is absolutely no need to apologize slagcoin. The fact that you’ve diagramed a solution was more than helpful.

mine still randomly wont work, then i come back an hour or more later and its working again. :looney:

Maybe the PCB is oddly reacting to your mod? I noticed that the PCB that I used for my low buck case is different than the one that I used my Street Fighter Anniversary Stick.

The only thing that I could suggest, since I don’t have the electrical engineering know-how, you could troubleshoot by using the same transistor that I did and see if that does anything. You said that you already tried another transistor, but was it swapped for the same spec transistor?

Did you try inserting two 100K resistors side-by-side for the base; being side-by-side they’ll produce 50K, which may be more appropriate. I’ve had mine setup with 20K resistance for a couple days now trying to turn it on at different intervals. There has not been any problem. If you need to by another resistor, maybe get a 22K one.

What is the best transistors to get from radioshack?

slagcoin said that pretty much any one of the NPN transistors will work. Give this one a try: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062615. The one that I used is the NTE brand (NTE289).

Thanks for your help! Imma try to make my TE wireless while keeping everything in stock without any modification or soldering to case (except buttons and joystick)

mine seems to be working consistently now. used it over the weekend multiple times without any problems. i removed the extra ground wire, but did not try the 22k resistor yet. hopefully it stays this way.

NTE style 200 series?

Hey guys

Great mod! I’m re-wiring my arcade table with the axisdapter and want to try this…
At the source (formerly known as radio shack) up in Toronto, I see a “NTE Style 200 series” transistor for “medium power application”… thats pretty much all the package says… Would this work?

thank you for your insight everyone!~ i just modded my tekken 5 stick for my ps3. saved myself installin an extra button

Sorry if I’m noobie at the intricacies of electric circuits/voltages. Can this same method be done on an Xbox 360 guide button?

Tried searching through the forums but didn’t find an answer. Would love to be able to use start+select as guide for my 360 pcb sticks (i’ve got a TE, madcatz, and a MS wireless if that helps at all).

I’d imagine that it may be possible, but since the voltages are different on the 360s there would have to be variations on this method. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

SUWeeeet~~~ Thanks JDM!
