How to make your game appealing to players? (fighting game dev. discussion)

have it be a sequel to an already successful game. thats how we get innovation.

interesting characters. mechanics that make different types of characters usable. lots of different ways to do things. ab usable stuff that makes characters easy to pick up but doesn’t make the character 1 dimensional.

aesthetics are crucial. looks good sounds good are nice, but are things fun to do some things that can help are: repetition(pinning someone with fireballs, infinites using block strings feel good sometimes), damaging looking moves, things that require timing, patterns of actions, or spacing, or predicting, to make you feel like your accomplishing something and not just hitting buttons and winning. Competition is the other important thing to get you that satisfied feeling, so GGPO ONLINE FOR ALL FIGHTING GAMES.

Good call! Repetition CAN be a lot of fun. It would be wrong to completely take out loops/spamming altogether, but we’ve gotta find a good balance in making sure that it doesn’t get an ‘ice car’ reuptation.

Damaging looking moves…Our animator is known for his love for over-the top action and screen-shake abuse. At the very least you can expect hits to feel like mallet strikes and supers to be really dramatic. We’re also looking to apply that kind of sturdy ‘oomph’ to blocked hits too. Finding the right sound effect and block graphic for that is going to be important. Timing! We have a rhythm-based character and fun rekkas planned for a few other members of the cast. I can’t say I know what combos are going to look like yet, but we’re going to try to allow players to combo in interesting and ingenous ways. Timing is also a key element to using the ‘dodge’ attacks correctly to avoid pressure.

Online is something we’ll have to look into for the future, once the actual game is playable.

I’d play test it whenever possible, me = interested…

All we’re saying is trying to market this as a “mainstream” or “normal” game, isn’t going to work on a lot of people, no matter what you do. You don’t have to stand up for the furry fandom, that’s not your job, but you do have to accept that those people who are furries have made people (like myself) so sketched out that we steer completely clear of anything that’s “anthro” these days. This is what KMD is trying to say, and what I am saying.

You brought up Blazblue and said people started playing it even though they didn’t like the art style. There are two things you have to remember here.

  1. Blazblue is from an already known and respected FG developer.

and

  1. “Too anime” is just an aesthetic qualm, and carries way less negative weight than “furry”, which makes people just think “this is some kind of creepy mouthbreathing jerkoff fuel isn’t it.” Whether or not it is.

Basically, you keep trying to refute this, but the fact is, the art style has already cut out a chunk of your potential audience in a way that few art styles actually could. I’ll play games with art styles I don’t like (GoF, for example), but I’m not going to play a furry game. I wouldn’t even want it on my hard drive in case my GF sees it or something and thinks I’m some kind of closet furry.

On the other hand, you have already gained an audience in furries. People who are furries will eat this shit up, so go for that. Be aware though that most people on SRK would rather just hate on you outright for making a furry game.

Blazblue does have quite a bit of perverted stuff in it though. Litchi, Taokaka flashing her panties at every given opportunity, Ragna and Jin’s brotherly shenanigans etc. This stigma applies to anime too, though admittedly on a lower level.

Also, this is not a ‘furry’ game, I’ve already explained that like a thousand times. 9_9 don’t tell me you wouldn’t play waku waku 7 because the main character’s a rabbit girl or because of Mauru or something like that. I’ve also made it pretty clear that we’re disassociating ourselves with the furry fandom.

Like someone else said, there’s nothing wrong with Ratchet and Clank. Do people bash that as being a ‘furry’ game too?

We don’t want to develop a game for furries who only care about the graphics but who can’t play for shit. We want to develop this game for fighting game players who will take the gameplay seriously enough for us to want to keep supporting them and make the game the best it can be.

Well I don’t play Waku Waku 7 but you know…that’s because nobody plays waku waku 7.

Also, I’m going to try to explain this to you again. I know your game “isn’t a furry game” you’ve said that before. Just because you’re trying to make more people like it, doesn’t mean that’s how it’s going to get perceived. Read this next part carefully:

If you have “anthro” characters in it, furries will like it, and other people will call it a “furry game.” It doesn’t even matter what your intentions were. ESPECIALLY if every single one of the characters is “anthro.” I’ve played games with anthro characters (SC had lizardman, so that counts, right?), but if you ONLY have “anthro” characters, then you’re only aiming at people with that one aesthetic sensibility, i.e. FURRIES. If there were a few on the cast, and the rest weren’t, maybe I would think differently, but there’s not.

You don’t consider that we might be targetting anime fans who like mecha either? If we wanted to make a game that appealed purely to furries, we’d have just made the characters flat out furries.

I do understand what you’re saying, but we are attempting to construct the characters in a way that doesn’t make people feel uncomfortable with them. It is possible to do. They are meant to be themed mechas moreso than furries. Think of them as aliens, and then suddenly there isn’t anything else to hate. There’s certainly no fanservice in the game, no creepy perverted stuff that most people would be creeped out by. Heck, I’d even go as far as to say that our planned vision for this game is more ‘clean’ than Guilty Gear for example.

human androids are a bit boring. These animal-based ones have more sticky-out bits and the ears and tails seem to come naturally. You’ll notice that in mecha, a lot of designs are animal themed (ZoE Anubis anyone?) even the 0-1 unit in Evangeleon is somewhat anthropomorphic. This happens because a lot of stylised mecha ends up giving the machines head gear, armour and other traits which often make them look more animal-based in nature. Besides, a lot of the eastern mythology we are using in the story is based heavilly on animal spirits with supernatural powers. The smaller, sentient mecha that make up the characters here are supposed to look both organic and mechanical at the same time, while at the same time representing mythical creatures/characters or characters from folklore. (such as our protagonist, who is based on an Indian myth about how asian squirrels got their stripes)

Quoting myself in response to that. I respect what you’re trying to do, but this is just how it goes, uk.

Eh fine. I guess we just have to deal with it.

There are other ways to get people to appreciate a fighter, surely. People played Monster because it had a fun and fairly unique system.

Sonic the Hedgehog says otherwise as it’s bought by bitter old school fanboys, weirdass new school fanboys, 16 year old girls, nerds, Sega fans, kids, and furries (not the main demographic)… as for who plays Waku Waku 7 raises hand

Oh gawd. Even furries are scared of Sonic fans.

And Waku Waku seven had one of the coolest cast of characters ever. Great smooth animation too.

lemme clear something up right now.

even if a game IS a furry game or just happens to be perceived as one, it will only have this EXTREME negative connotation over the internet. I doubt people have absolutely refused to buy the latest Starfox game because they just realized Fox is a furry character. It sure as fuck didn’t stop me and my friends from buying every single Smash Bros game. it didn’t stop millions of Pokemon fans from buying Pokemon shit. just like Chess players and Magic: The Gathering don’t stop playing what they play because someone called them a nerd.

everyone will do exactly what they want to. the idea is this: if they’re not on board with your plan, fuck them; they are not to be considered as a target audience. pay attention to the target audience. everyone else can say whatever the fuck they want to say and it won’t matter, because you’ll be getting paid.

Sonic fans are the worst of furries.

shudder

also, OMFG speaks the truth here. A lot of people irl don’t even know about furries. Unfortunately, the FG crowd and “internet people” seem to intersect quite a bit.

That ain’t right chief, since when did all Sonic fans become classified as furries? I’m not offended or anything I just want your 2 cents…

1: Project lead is a retard, jump ship before it goes downhill. Did he actually do market research before going through with this?

2: People are saying that furries is not a good formula for success. Back to point 1.

3: You’re so right, you don’t need to make threads when you try to make every other thread about Gleam of Force.

4: Art style is the main thing wrong here, of course it’s gonna be “ururur art style”

Just from my experience, since the sonic games have all pretty much blown chunks for the last 8 or 10 years, the only people still interested in the franchise are furries (excluding obvious exceptions like kids).

Well can’t disagree with that because it’s true (a lot of old school Sonic fans are still waiting it out for some reason, wishful thinking / pipe dreams I’m sure) besides that nicely done…

old school sonic fans still work cuz you can play the nostalgia card and those games were actually good. Old sonic was also fat and had cartoon anatomy making him unimaginable sexually and harmless, like olive oil from popeye or Micky or something.

new sonic fans are probably all mouth breathing, furries. when you start putting dialouge and female anthromorphs along with increasing the masculinity of sonic’s design, it’s gone past the realm of weird even without any love storylines. plus they actually play the almost universally regarded as crappy games, making them fanboy’s which is another level of internet hell.

if there are furries they have to be awesome like totoro (sasquache), 95% human if female(felicia or any animal just ears and tail), 95% beast if male (talbain) if you have a male character with humanoid muscles showing and a canine face, your game wont just LOOK like a game for furries.

I can be ok with the furries but they are just too damn cute!
I can’t even imagine those characters fighting they should just bring joy and happiness to the world like the care bears.
I like my fighting games dark and bloody and the characters cool and badass.

The deeper you make the game. The further you will have to go to teach that depth.

If you have combos. The timing and inputs need to be demonstrated. A player shouldn’t have to walk away from a game to research how to play it.

Maybe you should consider using the unity engine. It’s very easy to move assets from many 3d apps that support fbx. And if you know java script, c#, boo, you shouldn’t have a hard time getting the game going. An indie license of unity is only $200. And unity forums are actually pretty good with a lot of helpful knowledgeable people.
