Bro! I just rewatched it and that is legit. She went under it, not through it. The starting frames of hayate have her crouching down a bit just as she takes off.
Think…Timecop!

I’m sure everyone already know this but it’s cool so I’ll mention it anyway
Two chuns right next to each other will stand fierce through each other if they hit it at the same time. It’s how I used to test input lag of two sticks against each other when all I had was my wits and no camera.
Thing I noticed: There’s a break between the start up and the first forward movement where her shadow is behind the fireball and she’s in front of it. That’s some funky ass timing and I can’t find the sweet spot.
I know it’s going to go in as “Oh, it’s just Dander” but if you’re trying it on OE, you probably aren’t going to see the frame where that duck happens and will just have to treat it as granted.
she definitely does squat as she starts up. it could be that but at the start she also moves a tremendous amount on each frame.
so really it could be either cause she can definitely warp through shit with hayate, not just fireballs, entire characters.
I’m trying it on OE. I don’t think it’s a ducking frame, I think it’s just a frame where she skips over space in the 2D plain… Which is wonky considering how fluid 3S is but still… Weird.
I’ve made note of the many times where I’ve EX hayate’d through random shit. EX dash slash from Alex, EX Shoulder from Urien, Cold Blue Kick from Remy. It’s a fairly silly aspect
call be crazy but from a cursory inspection i think both things are occuring.
as makoto ducks her head is still the highest point. which is, horizontally, not very long. so its easy for her to get out of the way on the next frame despite the projectiles relatively slow speed (thin projectile hitbox, relatively thin hurtbox + sudden move from frame to frame).
if she wasn’t ducking she wouldn’t move out of the way in time because she’s so fucking fat and projectiles are slow compared to dashes and other moves.
Yeah, I’d go with Tebbo’s take on it or there’s also the whole idea that Makoto disperses into the cosmos since she hits such high speeds and then rematerializes like a second later.
Makoto, a case study in quantum entanglement??
Makoto is a Star Trek fan I think. She’s mastered the Picard Maneuver.
She even has her own take on it, PALM TO FACE ABARE
I’ve gone under hadoukens with Makoto a bunch of times. Her fukiage and hayate can slide(?) under them pretty easy. Idk if they’re supposed to, but they do. If you wanted to test it to see if she was actually going through it I would use something like maybe a low Remy sonic boom. I wouldn’t be surprised if she really is just teleporting her hurt/push boxes around too fast tho.
