I bought some joysticks for my ps2 and I’m trying to get used to doing movements and button pushing. Are there some tricks or tips to do movements such has HCF/HCB 2xQCF etc and having the fingers in such a way to push buttons more effectively? Going from dpad to joystick made my dudley jump all over the screen when I’d try to cancel or link any of my moves (and of course I’d look like an idiot). Any tips would be awesome.

Actually same with me I need tips bad .Good at controller suck completely at joystick… I’ve have accepted the fact that I will have to use a joystick one day.

I’ve been trying out a couple things in training mode today. First was practicing the piano tap of the buttons to get my super out. Second was doing full circles instead of half circles after the HK in order to get the moves out. I don’t know if that’s an effective method to do moves but I’ll keep experimenting and I’ll also try it out at the arcade.

For starters, do you play ball top or bat top joystick?
MOst people hold ball top with the shaft of the stick going in between their middle and index finger. their thumb then wraps around the side facing them. It gives alot of control and speed.
For a bat top, I cant really describe how I hold it. If I tried, I would say… I hold it mostly with the area between my thumb and index finger, with my fingers somewhat relaxed. It seems to be easier for me to dash and parry forward this way. Of course, when moving back, I then close my fingertips together and flick my wrist. Same applies to QCF and stuff. Honestly though, its a matter of preference, and once you get comfortable, everything should flow nicely.

My friend got the tekken 5 stick and I have the SFAC stick. Right now I’m practicing on the ball top tekken 5 stick. I can do half circles and shoryukens pretty consistently but those 2x quarter circles are still owning me hard. Also, I’m noticing that I have this tendency of letting go of the joystick once I do my half circle (I do a slapping motion with my wrist and then the hand somehow magically goes off the joystick). I guess more practice is required to get rid of that habit.

I played 3s with the pad for a bit more than a year before I made the transition to the joystick. At first it was more intimidating than anything, but I still bit the bullet and played versus my friends. Playing versus them I handicapped myself in the sense that I couldn’t execute well, but I could still fight because I knew how to play the matchups. I spent my spare time in training mode practicing execution and within a mere few weeks I could not imagine how I ever played the pad.

I use the ball-top, and I hold it as Capn Spanky described. When the fight begins I place my index finger on jab, middle on strong, ring on fierce, and I place my thumb above short. For throws I just use my index finger and thumb, but for UOH I use my entire middle finger. For forward and roundhouse, I use the bottom of my respective fingers.

As far as the QCFx2 motion goes, I do down-forward, forward, down-forward, forward.

Just keep practicing, and more importantly take any chance you have to play versus friends.

I used to do things like that, but my hands are so big that sometimes I would hit HP and the bottom of my finger would hit RH and a taunt would come out instead. It sucks.

If you still have stock parts on the SFAC stick, I’d suggest swapping them out for better parts (if you have the cash to spare). No joke, the crap they give you with the stock model sucks hardcore compared to a nice set of parts. There’s a joy stick thread somewhere around here with a link to convert your SFAC stick. That’s what I did, and I thank myself every time I play SF. Also, it takes practice. It took me a whole summer to get used to my stick. But once you get good at a stick, there’s not going back.

edit: here’s the link. http://www.arcadestickmonk.com/SFACmod.html I hope that helps.

i used to hold it between my middle and ring finger, kind of like a claw.

but now i just hold it from the side, jp/american sticks btw.

After playing a bunch of rounds with friends, I learned that the SFAC stick molests my hands.

From the two rounds I played with it, the buttons were too high. I can’t say anything about the joystick, though.

when i hold my arcade stick, if u can feel the line that goes around the ball top, i put my middle finger on that, ring and index under and on top of my middle, my thumb on the side facing north east almost touching your finger, and with your little finger, from your nail to the left there are two joints, on your second joint, place the shaft right next to the joint(on the left of the joint) so it’s not on your joint(which hurts if it is on your joint)and the tip of my ring finger goes on the first joint of my pinky finger.

also i’m only 13 so my hands r small

hope that made sense
