Did I ever say force?

No, I’m asking for suggestions of how to gently encourage my brother along with me on my quest to improve my game. I figured some of you have gone through this with your own friends or family. I was hoping you guys might have tips or suggestions on how to make it more fun for him to learn, starting with learning to accept the stick as a viable controller.

Never mind though, fuck me for asking.

haha, calm down. I love sticks more than anyone, but give it a rest dude. Unless he’s using a guncon or something, there isn’t a whole lot he won’t be able to do on a pad, despite everyones unreasonable worship of that fuckin madcatz stick.

ARGH, I GOT FLAMED! FUCK MY LIFE!

Okay, well that’s fine if you don’t have any ideas for me or if you don’t think his mind can be changed. I was just hoping someone could suggest an idea of two, because I believe he could grow to like the stick (I kinda know him since he’s my brother and all).

I still don’t know if I should let him win a few when he’s using the stick so he doesn’t get discouraged, no one has commented on that idea yet.

It’s nice and all that you like your joystick now… but who cares if your brother doesn’t? It’s not the end of the world.

I’m just tired of him calling me a mega-nerd or whatever because I learned how to use a stick and now I’m way better than him. I want him to get the level up that I’ve been able to get and I know he can do it if he would just suck it up and accept that we’re not on the same level anymore.

He was way more excited for this game than me but now that he’s not as good as me, he pretends like he doesn’t like it or want to get better. He obviously does because he keeps asking to play even though he knows he’ll lose. I’m trying to help him by letting him learn on my arcade stick. Like I say, he’s just being stubborn.

I simply want a way to gradually get him to use the stick. It helped my game. I believe it can do the same for him.

But yeah, I’ll stop asking and let the thread run its course. You guys are probably tired of me explaining this. I’ll just read the replies and make comments to the relevant ones.

hahaha, your brother is a scrub. he calls you a nerd to make himself feel better about losing, and is only willing to go so far to improve. people need to want to learn, and he doesn’t. use that time to invest in yourself.

Once again, it’s just simple brothers fighting over stuff… just let it go. If he doesn’t want to play on the stick, stop worrying about it and your life will be less stressful. My brother doesn’t like hamburgers for some reason… I find it ridiculous but I stopped trying to cram sliders down his throat and we all started living better lives.

Bwah… is this the awful truth?
I sure hope that’s not the case.

Maybe you’re right. Perhaps there’s no hope.
Never mind then guys, I’ll try to deal with him myself.

Perhaps if I trounce him enough times he’ll get an inspiration.

not everyone is cut out of competitive gaming. sometimes you just have to admit it. I’d love to get my brother into competitive SF, but its a calling.

Don’t get trolled dude. There’s plenty of assholes on this forum. Be selective about who you give a fuck about. Especially if they have red rep, it typically means they don’t know what the hell they are saying. If they have decent green rep and they being snarky, take their words with a grain of salt, and you will do OK here.

Bottom line, I lost all my SF buddies as I grew up. (Though I play on GGPO with a few of them.) At some point you have to focus on your own progression as a gamer. SF isn’t going to go away anytime soon. Not everyone will ever have the same passion as you do for the game. As for letting them win? Sure, no problem, but make sure somewhere in their minds they know they are being let win. Show them you’re in training mode. Hell, set it on training mode and have the human control the other player so the match can last forever.

But don’t allow that to ruin your own progress, unless the highest level you wish to achieve is the level your brothers friends want to reach.

One of my buddies wasn’t liking the stick at first, either, but then i had him pick gief and spin the stick while hitting all 3 punches. He had a good time spd’ing everything in sight.

Anyway, I’d probably wait for him to keep messing up a combo. Then be like, “hey, this is why that controller sucks…” And proceed to show him why it’s easier on a stick.

Actually, that’s an awesome idea. Maybe I’ll try that. I completely forgot about this feature. Perhaps in a no lose situation he may be more comfortable experimenting with a new controller.

I was a long time pad user, switched to stick a year or so ago, and I definetely prefer it. However, the only concrete reasons I ever had for switching from pad don’t exist in SF4.

Mashing out of holds - holds do set number of hits now.
Mashing out of dizzy - not really useful in SF4, dizzy is rare and lasts longer.
Hitting 3P/3K - input windows in SF4 are big enough that this is pretty damn easy now.

A friend of mine is a very technically proficient player, and he uses a pad. Can even do Johnny Divine Blade FRC combos on a pad in GG (if anyone plays GG they’ll know you can’t use the shortcut button for this due to slash triggering the 2nd part), and he’s fine on a pad.

Now, I won’t be going back to a pad, but they’re certainly more viable than they’ve ever been before.

I used to do this back in the day. It’s easy to burn out after 10m of straight fighting, but it’s your best shot. GL bro. If they don’t want to adapt, keep them on the pad I guess. If they really care about improving they will come around.

Have they ever been to an arcade?

I am just like one of your friends. My brother constantly tells me to switch to stick like he has

I just dont listen to these people raving about fight pads and fight sticks. The 360 controller is just fine. They say stick is better and its easier to do combos. If you blame not being able to pull off combos due to the controller, then its most likely the user, not the controller itself that is at fault

A fighting pad or stick isnt going to make you better at this game. Practice and dedication will. If you cant pull off simple combos and Ultras with the 360 controller, what makes you think a ‘magic’ fightpad or stick will let you?

Perhaps your friends and I think alike

really?

The problem is, whenever he and his group of gamer friends come over to play and I try to get them to use my arcade stick, they groan and refer to it as the “crappy controller”. Which pisses me off to no end

Pisses me off to no end sounds like anger to me.

GG

Everyone at my work uses pads and I keep trying to tell them that stick is the way but they won’t listen. They keep saying oh we grew up on pad so pad is superior. SF4 has so much stuff that is hard as hell to do on a pad though so I don’t know why people don’t see the light. I’m lucky that I didn’t get into fighting games till like 2 years ago with 3rd Strike and I started that on a stick.

Its kinda lame when everyone you play with plays on pad and they aren’t able to do anything advanced because of it…

Heh, AIAB is where mine is from and it has SF art all over it.

Like…?

I just want some examples, for curiosity’s sake.

There isn’t anything advanced that you can do on a stick that you can’t on a pad unless you don’t have shoulder buttons for PPP/KKK or even jab+Short or Strong+Forward. Even though you can still for the most part perform everything it’s just overall easier to do these actions with a good stick and buttons in general. Not everyone is proficient at using a pad though, and I’m sure there are plenty of pad users that can stomp people with a $200+ stick just because they are better players. From personal experince I would claim that same stick would make the pad user even better, but not everyone is the same. 360’s are a hell of a lot easier on a stick, but some people have no problems doing them with a pad either /shrug.

I think pretty much the only legitimate reason for a pad vs stick argument is when going to the arcade. You need to know how to play on a stick to be any good there, otherwise it’s up to the player and whether or not they can actually find a controller with a really responsive directional pad as well as decent buttons. Some people also complain that their thumbs hurt when using a pad, which seems to be true for many…but I never understood this. My hands never got fatigued.
