Let me see your replays. I am not the best player on here but I can bet you almost any money you left free damage on the table during your matches. That is the first step to even becoming a threat - taking every free opportunity. Creating your own opportunities with mind games comes later.
Playing Endless is huge for learning the specifics of each matchup. Also eventually you are bound to win some fights this way. don’t be discouraged by 10-0 losses if someone is better than you.
As far as dealing with the rage, the only thing to help it is winning another fight. You have to put in loads of time to get good at it; you can’t give up. You have to just think of it as another step on the path to becoming great. WhenI lose, I just want to play more against that player to learn how to beat that play.
I used to be as bad as you and I have A+ Ranking now so let that motivate you to know its possible.
“Don’t be a quitter, you can be a winner, everyone was a beginner”- Sanford Kelly.
You’re on a good path, you play, watch matches, work on execution and look at your mistakes. You might want to hit up some people on SRK to play with you, they can help you out.
Getting beat up? Goto training, drink a tall glass of water, say “Goouse-frabba” and practice spacing. A jump that will bring you infront of and a jump that will bring you behind of
Are you an person that naturally gets angry? This sounds like more of a “overcoming anger in my life” situation. If that’s not the case you just gotta laugh it off. Laugh, Smirk, just dont give a shit if you lose, and focus on not winning but putting up a better fight than the last time. Winning will come but there will always be people that can body you 90% of the time.
dont play to win, play to improve and when winning happens its an extra perk. Especially if you can find people to add to your friends list so you can play them more often. think i lost 0-10 last time, now i want to take a round, now i want to take a game; or i want the rounds i lose to not be complete blow ups even if I lose like the last time and i want to land more anti airs or block more setups. Small victories.
Also dont play laggy people, whenever i play someone thats super laggy I get mad as fuck win or lose lol
Stay calm, and try to focus on what you can do better next time, and not what you did wrong. Try to message the person afterward, and ask them for pointers.
Don’t take it so seriously, getting beat all the time is a learning curve. If you get raged out while you’re in a match you won’t think clearly and will probably end up doing stupid things that rage you out even more. Enjoy the game and don’t base your level of skill on winning all your matches… sometimes you can play a really solid match and still get beat, or play crap and button mash and destroy someone.
Also take a break after a heavy loosing streak and relax, smoke a cigarette or something.
I’ve been bodied plenty of times in a row yet I don’t get angry (which I find strange because in person I have a short temper).
I tend to get more pissed off when I’m in training mode and I can’t land a new combo I want to learn
But just generally when I’m just raging, I find the best thing to do is just relax. What you need to do to relax is different than mine obviously… but just relax. Its an old saying that still remains true: You’ll never perform well if you let your emotions get in your way. Applies to real life fights, applies to sports, applies to FGs too…
Raging while playing is par for the course for SF4. Sometimes things just don’t go the way you intend, despite all the practice and research you put in. It sounds to me like you’re losing to opponents you probably shouldn’t be losing to. Its a game of nerves in the end. I’ve had instances where I let my BP fall 1000+ points in a day because I couldn’t think clearly from the constant losing. It helps when you stop giving a crap about your win/loss ratio and care more about what could have been done better in the match to increase your odds at winning. I could give more specific advice if I knew which character you play and what matchups give you difficulty, but you probably don’t even need it much at this point. Just shift your focus to improving constantly, its an endless journey man.
Nobody has actually pointed this out but you said something along the lines of it not mattering what character you or your opponent played. You should really commit to a character because each and every one has a lot to learn and take in. Even if Street Fighter 4 rewards straight up fundamentals compared to character skill more than say an Arcsys fighter - You should still be working on that technology.
Judging by the situations you mentioned that particularly annoy you - You should pick up a character with a reliable fireball. You hate charge characters who hold back and wait for you to come? Let the fireball come to them (though charge characters often have answers to fireballs). It sounds like your neutral game isn’t all that good, even if your other aspects are fine. A good neutral game is very important in this game.
Now, I am the first person to encourage unorthodox playstyles but here I’m going to say you really need to just play Ryu or something. His tools are so damn solid that you can’t find yourself in a bad situation and from that you’ll learn how you should be acting at all times and eventually pick up someone else, or even stick to Ryu. Look at me, I wanted to get into the game and level up. I picked T-Hawk because I didn’t want poor execution of combos to scramble with my mind, and just develop a good ground game before picking up Chun Li. Result? My T-Hawk has become noticeable in the local scene, people tell me I’m improving quickly and I’m just enjoying the character. Find a solid toolkit and just play the game, if you’re just learning. It worked out for me.
PS: I get mad too. Especially against Blanka (Hawk vs Blanka is considered the hardest MU in the game by some) getting a free win online. Personally I just move on to the next one and if it makes me mad again I just stop for an hour and do some chores.
I feel like we’re on a pretty similar boat, in the fact that we’ve both recently started playing, and we are both encountering a mass amount of losses.
But… I’ve not found myself getting too angry, and I think it’s for a few reasons:
I’m not playing JUST to win, heck, i want to win, who doesn’t? But I can also appreciate that the match itself is teaching me something, even if I lose terribly, at least I’m that little bit more experienced for the next time.
If I do find myself getting stressed out, I go off the game. It doesn’t have to be a long break, even if its just 15 minutes to take a breather, at least im not playing when I’m stressed, because i’ve found I play 10x worse when i’m getting mad.
Don’t look too far into the techniques, so far, i’m just learning basic links and combo’s. I haven’t dared look into frame traps etc. because I know it’ll just feel too daunting and make me less motivated to carry on playing. Take it a step at a time, don’t feel like you’re gonna get good straight away, I certainly dont.
Just kinda take it as it comes, if you lose, so be it; if you win, well done. Either way, you’re going to be making progress, even if it feels small.
If I understand correctly, you rage because you lose 90 % of your games against better players?
Unless they are trolling or disrespect you, I’d feel very honoured to play against them instead of raging.
1 win in 20 matches is usually the outcome for me too in this case. Even if they let me win that one game, it means I was close to let me win.
About 8-10 times I was matched up with someone who was C-B rank on their character (I’m still at 100 BP lol) and noticed that their play style is actually very simple, and I picked out all of their tendencies.
Yet somehow, I still found myself losing. I think it’s mainly the lack of consistency in my ability to punish. I’ll need to go back to the training room and drill execution until it’s second nature.
But the most rage-inducing part of it all is losing to someone you KNOW you could and should have been able to beat, but couldn’t because of your own mistakes.
And what I noticed was this vicious cycle: Once I started losing, I started thinking less and being more risky. My reaction speed slowed down even more, and I wasn’t observing anymore. Made me lose even more.
Eventually I decided this will probably just hurt my playing more if I continue, so I just turned it off. I’ll go train execution tomorrow and play some Endless matches. Fuck Ranked. Means nothing when you have 4K BP on there -_-
Play SNK fighting games and deal with SNK Boss Syndrome instead. The Boss CPUs will kick your ass almost as badly as real opponents and will increase your rage equally as high!
Seriously, just keep going on endless so there is no reason to rage. Once you feel good enough, then go online and get thrashed again. I mean win.
Rage will blind you and make you lose, it’s a vicious cycle which will only be countered by some manner of calm collective peace
