How do you choose your fighting game characters?

I go for footsies, good walk speed and good zoning
my characters in ssf4 are chun li akuma Ryu yang and Cammy
in every other game I go w chun and Ryu.

I like funny, arrogant or dramatic (or a mix) characters that are not top tier. as for playstyle, I dont mind.
A funny taunt or move makes the difference in a fighting game.

Eg Akari, Yuki and Hibiki on Last Blade 2. Amano is way too annoying.
Or Iggy in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. the scratching taunt is the best.
Nakoruru and Rimoruru in Samurai Spirits
R. Mika, Karin and Guy in SFA
Yuri, Ruy and Mary in KOF
Ibuki in SF3S

SF4 unfortunately lacks in that department. cause none of its characters is either funny or dramatic in a convenient way
SFxTekken has Kuma, so he’s my main pick.

For some reason, I end up choosing the lady-like, graceful characters, so I go by looks. That, and their fighting styles are usually really elegant.

I tend to avoid characters with charge moves. QCF all day.

For me it’s about chars I like tho I never got into fighters was more casual and never learned combos and such so I didn’t get to play many fighters in the arcade.
SF - Zangief
MvC1 - Cap/Gambit
MvC3 - Phoenix Wright/Haggar/Doom(main team) Cap/Nova/Hawkeye(2nd team)
Tekken - Jin,King
Killer instinct - Cinder,Fulgore,Saberwulf
MK - Sub-Zero,Kung Lao

I look for whoever has a really high-pressure rushdown style that doesnt let the opponent breathe. Guy has been my main since forever because of that, and its also why Tron and Wesker are always on my MvC3 team.

I use the random button, then I (maybe) check their move list. I look at how their normals are (I hate quirky normals) and try to figure out what the characters style is.

On SF4 i fucked with loads of characters when it first came out, i was absolute garbage though so i might as well have just been looking at a static screen for all the good it did me. Once i started lurking here a bit (join date/post ratio is whack lol) and understood the game better Ryu seemed like the best fit and i’ve never got bored of using him, although i would say i only recently became competent with him so it’s been a long journey but it’s pretty gratifying sticking with one character for all that time.

On Marvel i decided to use Dante pre-release no matter what cause i’m a DMC fan(boy), stuck with Ryu again and used Sentinel as sort of an easy neutral assist supplement for both characters. I’m a training room warrior on marvel BIG time though, mainly because the net code is ass and it’s not as active in the UK so you have to stray to Europe to find frequent matches, which gives you even more connection hassle.

Do they have a command throw that does a lot of damage? Yes? I play that character.

I don’t know if I’ve replied to this forever, but I can pretty much confirm that it’s just looks that I go for in a character. Looking classy is the number 1 important thing of course! It’s kind of funny because in real life I don’t think I pay much attention to how I look…

Moves and feel are the most important. But on the hand a pet peeve of mine is a character with a really crappy looking throw motion. I will stay away from he or she if that’s the case.

I choose characters by feel. Even if the character has all the right moves, if things feel wonky and I can never adjust, then I can’t roll with said character(s). The characters I like such as Omega Red in MvC2 or Gambit in XvsSF or Karin in Alpha 3 just clicked when I used them. So I choose them, stayed with them and never looked back.

How well did you do with them?

Play with the whole cast until I find a that character feels right.

Typically it will be if they look fun to play from the gameplay I see, or the weapon or style. Hell, I originally picked my main in Blazblue just because she had 2 handguns, and I wound up picking my secondary in it because people were like “If you think Taokaka character, why don’t you ever play her?” and I didn’t have a legit answer (Arakune, was just something different I figured “why not” with). But I oddly enough I seem to have a kinda random taste when it comes to who I use in fighters. Though I typically try to avoid absolute bottom tier and if possible, the absolute top tier character sometimes. Unless I’ve already been playing them.

Alpha 3: Sakura
Soul Calibur (pre-V since I haven’t played it yet): Xiangua/Kilik/Siegfried
Guilty Gear: Millia/Faust
AE2012: Juri/Ibuki
Blazblue: Noel/Taokaka/Arakune
KOFXIII: Benimaru/Kula/Yuri/Kyo
Persona 4 Arena: Yukiko/Chie
MK9: Smoke/Kabal/Kitana

I was average in MvC2 but had tons of fun and was able to beat a few people every now and then who were clearly better than me. In Alpha 3 and XvsSF I did pretty good. I think if you just deeply appreciate your character, you can overachieve a little.

Look for a tier list and pick the top.

O.R. is really underrated

Omega Red / Ruby / Blackheart would be the most godlike team if the top tier didn’t exist.

I don’t really have a preference. If I like their playstyle, I’ll use that character. I never thought I’d use a grappler seriously until I picked up Tager in Blazblue.
