Oh, me too!
I’ve been thinking I should try using a new method, though, because honestly I’m starting to get bored of playing as Vega in every single game.

they just gotta lock and act cool.
I either watch videos or mess around with them in training mode. Mission mode is helpful to learn basics for each, but I have to be able to do flashy and interesting things with them.
Most of the time I tend to pick mid to low tier characters (except for marvel lulz) It’s because I get more enjoyment out of the game by using a lesser used/not so great character. The satisfaction of winning with those types of characters keeps my interest in the game to a high level. And yes, I like picking the sexy ladies and just going in.
AE - Juri, Bison
MvC3 - Wesker/X-23/Doom
SFxT - Juri/Xiaoyu
KOFXIII - Kensou/Kula/Saiki
Tekken 6/TTT2 - Lili/Miguel
3S - Necro, Ibuki
BBCS - Mu-12
MBAACC - Aoko
GGXXAC - Millia
Dan is the only main I ever need. His buddies Allen Snider and Sean also suffice, but they need more love.
Mid-Mid+ Tier All around characters
The one that has the best chance of not letting the opponent play at all.
Whoever is top tier, then sub whoever lets me troll my opponent the most.
i pick the character who is not to hard and they can do things such as footsies and what not…i pick grapple type characters because i like ones that hit hard and do LOTS of damage so ssf4…zangief…hakan,sfxt abel,king.marduk,kof.daimon
i lean more towards close range relentless offense so i end up using rushdown characters mostly

Ive found that i like characters that i can autopilot with, yet arent popular for whatever reason and that have a definite non autopilot game when playing against people that can beat my autopiloting… But i dont like obvious characters… Like divekick autopilot.
My mains are ibuki in sf4 and painwheel in skullgirls.

There are many different factors that go into choosing a character. Some include:
[LIST]
[]Knowing the character if it’s a crossover game. I play Mega Man in MvC2, Zero and Phoenix Wright in MvC3, and Toon Link and Sonic in Brawl.
[]Characters being familiar or similar to past mains. That’s why I picked Patrokolos in SCV; He reminded me of Cassandra. I also noticed that when I went back to play Melee a while back, I was gravitated towards Roy because his Up B reminded me of Zero’s Ryuenjin.
[]If they look or sound cool. For example, Akuma in MvC3 Vanilla. He was all like “YOU WILL FEEL THE PAIN OF MY FIST”. He was so overdramatic and hammy that I knew I had to main him. He was also the perfect character to complete my team. Lucky coincidence, huh?
[]Playstyle. This one’s hard to explain, but I just know when a character feels right or wrong. In MvC3, Zero and Tron both really clicked for me, and they also happened to have great synergy. Again, quite lucky. FUCK YOU CAPCOM FOR NERFING TRON!
[]Aesthetics. This pretty much only applies to female characters (being straight male and all), and it’s a larger factor than I’d like to admit.
[]Tiers (also synergy in team games). This is probably the biggest factor for me overall, because, at the end of the day I want to win. I do still play lower tier characters (i.e. Phoenix Wright) but they’re pretty much reserved for side teams only.

Looks + how they play.
Even dependent per game. Say I use Ryu in ST an A2, but in IV I think the shotos look like apes, so I dont. Same goes for Rog. I played IV very briefly, and chose Juri, because character looks good, plus has fun combos + feng shui. I WOULD use Viper if I played IV, because she seems fun (for that game) but the chicken legs and the fact that it looks like she has a package make it a no go.
Skullgirls team = Filia + Parasoul, like their playstyles, they work well on a a 2 man team for me, and they look the most normal.
Kazuya in Tekken, EWGFs are fun, and he always has a badass alternate attire since Tekken 2.
ect. ect.
Playstyle and moveset are the top priority for me. I really don’t care about personality and looks, although they are a nice addition. I tend to lean more towards characters that are capable of pressuring and scaring my opponent which is why I love rekka characters(Karin/Fei). Trapping them in the corner and scaring them with rekka pressure is way too fun.
Step 1: Is Iori Yagami in the game? If so, he’s your main.
**Step 2: **No Yagami? Where’s the nearest hot-blooded or delinquent character? Is he fun and effective and cool? If so, he’s your main.
Step 3: Nobody is stereotypically hot-blooded? Examine fighting styles. Not playstyles, their biographical style. Bonus points for brawlers, karatekas, and judokas. If they turn out to be fun, pick them.
Step 4: In the event of anime games without discernible fighting styles, check to see if the “Hero” is a rushdown badass without any real mixups to speak of. If so, pick Sol Badguy or Ragna.
Alt. Step: Forget those four steps and pick the character with the manliest punch of all. Luckily this often coincides with other steps in the system.
I just try out each character until I find one that feels right. That’s how I ended up with Akuma in SFIV and Raiden in MK
