How do 30+ year old players manage to still be in the competitive scene?

As they say, time management. I have a full time job. A fiance. Friends who need to much attention. I think the main issue here is that your day is ending at 11pm. I get up at half past 6 every morning as my fiance won’t get out of bed if she doesn’t have coffee and food. And I oblige because shes kind enough to play with my junk.

I work until I am done and then go wait for her to finish work and take her home, as we have one car. We then sort out dinner and watch some tv together while we eat. It is normally about 8 at this point. She has her own shows she likes to watch and I can’t stand them. So this is the time I use to play. 8-12 generally. And then its bed time. I have extra time on weekends and holidays too.

Those annoying friends like to play as well. So we arrange offline days. And have a team that practices twice a week online.
I generally take a break from fighting games every other month to catch up on whatever games have come out that I would like to play. But I prefer playing fighting games to shooters. So I jump straight back in. RPGs I play slowly and slot them in here and there. And if I have a comp coming up I focus on one specific time to play.

Its about wanting to play. And deciding if you are casual or competitive. Then adjusting life around it. If you try and fight something as “unimportant” as gaming into your life, you will never have time.

@Windalfr good matches I really need a lot more practice I cant even counter what you do. Balrog has amazing hit stun and frames. I tried going for the throws but yeah. Im not really good at footsies since I just parry my way to victory in 3s I have to work on my neutral game. I didnt play iv that much so I guess thats why I suck at v.

They’re still competitive because when you git gud it never really goes away. They don’t see code anymore. Just resets and frame traps.

facts aren’t an excuse. I’m not saying YOU can’t get better as you age, I’m saying it’s just how bodies work.

30s is pretty much the new 20s. I still have enough time to play I have no interest in wife and kids at the moment. I have 10 hours a day to do what I want.

Being single helps a lot.

being competitive is not only about playing but studying the game which can be done outside of play time by
watching video, reading guides and ect.

not only that you can still practice some skills like dexterity, hand eye coordination, and strategy in other games that easy and convenient to play like on portable game devices and mobile phones. Their not ideal but they keep some of these skills from regressing.

Try to grasp Super Turbo being younger and coming from lets say… SF4, and go to Japan and try to level up there. XD (no offense btw)

Would any of you 30+ people trade places with Daigo/Wong/Infiltration? I know I wouldn’t.

With Daigo sure, with Wong hell no.

Doing what I love to do for a living? Are you kidding me? I’d even do that if I earned a little less than a burger flipper.
That sounds much better than doing a job I hate that pays well for the rest of my fucking life.

Fuck work!

Aren’t those 3 already in their 30’s? Or at least close to it? Infiltration was said to be 31. But Daigo and Wong have been in this scene since B4 if not longer. They gotta be closing in on 30 if not past it themselves. So basically the question is if I want to trade places with someone else who is also 30+… No thanks.

This is why you do not see many older players play games like Skullgirls or anime fighters. They were not the games they grew up with

I’m serious. Even with what Daigo or infiltration are getting paid (I’m assuming 100-150k/year) I wouldn’t. Money is good now but that’s assuming you keep winning. Every tournament you don’t place top 3 and it’s a big set back monetarily. You pretty much have to win capcom cup or evo to break six figures. If you break your arm or stop winning you get phased out unapologetically. Money stops flowing in, sponsors will drop you. One day you wake up in your mid to late 30’s with a CV that lists your video game accomplishments, not a great look. This is why Daigo works in a nursing home, not sure what Wong or Infiltration do for a living outside gaming.

Gaming is gruelling work if that is where you derive your primary income from. A lot of these top players do not look healthy. They look stressed out and tired, malnourished.

I hope these guys can save and invest wisely or lateral into working for capcom or something. Daigo with his book idea is what I’d like to see more of. Don’t get me wrong I respect the hustle it’s just too much work and too much uncertainty for me. Both in life and games I choose the path of least resistance.

For a lot of these guys, competitive gaming is their whole lives. Their friends are all FGC. Their spare time is fighting games. It’s their hobby, their job and their social life. Work at day, play games all night. Not to mention all the time they spent in their youth practicing. I don’t envy pro gamers. Having worked with many of them, it’s not as great a life as it might seem.

And for those wondering, the players get salaries plus tournament winnings and their travel covered. So losing/winning doesn’t make a huge difference outside of tournament winnings. But no one, other than Daigo, is making a lucrative income. Hence why they all work.

By any chance, are you annoyed when the game is rebalanced and your character feels “off” That is actually what made me top SFIV at Arcade Edition.

^^ Agreed. When i was younger and being a bum in college, i played MVC2, UMVC3, and SFIV day in and day out pretty competitively. Went to many tournaments. Nothing huge but, lots of fun, small-time scenes.

These days? Yeah, no. When you get older you come to realize two things: #1- You’re not going to be young forever. Your prime years are slipping away fast. And #2- Life is too damn short. Spending excessive amounts of time gaming and training in fighters is just not an option anymore.

I get much more fulfillment out of working on life instead and, honing my skills in other areas. Like pushing my fitness even further in the gym, making overtime $$$$ at my job, and of course, getting Pussy.

Kinda sad but, i’ve only just recently come to realize my true ladies-man skills now that i’m in my 30’s and graduated. I wish i had put down the damn arcade stick a lot sooner and shifted my focus on getting out more and learning how to pick up chicks instead. My college days could have been a lot more fun.

Consider this post a public service message for you twenty-something’s. Life is a lot shorter than you realize…either get it or it’ll pass you by. #Priorities #getoffyourass

Haha, my sentiments exactly. Although fighting game escapades have given me life experiences I wouldn’t trade for the world (Asia, Europe, US), they have to stop at one point, otherwise you fall behind in all other areas like AlphaCharlie points out.

As a curiousity, how many of the actual pro gamers have girlfriends? I know Momochi and GamerBee, but who else?

Lol if your priority in life is anything other than doing what you wanna do. If you aren’t heading into your 40’s playing FG’s then you are a god dam scrub!

Actually here is a public service message for you twenty somethings, doing what other people think is the best or right route is almost always wrong, do you, nobody else.

Also don’t fucking work overtime thinking it makes you rich, that’s life passing you by big time.

I would actually trade places with Justin. Even though he works full time, he works at a place I would be interested in, and he does well in tourneys.

On topic, it’s all about time management. Being single helps, because you’re left with more time to pursue your interests.

I got a similar problem.

I dont ever expect to olay competetively but Ive always wanted to get good at a fighting games so im concisdering KOF XIV. Funny enough now that im almost 30 i have a bit more time than. i did when i was in college (im married…my job is routine and if I want I can usually carve a out a couple hours here or there to play) but i dunno if Im too old to start since I know it takes 100s to 1000s of hours to get decent. Ima be 40 by the time im decent and my old bones gonna be too slow to react to all the young whipper snappers. Any advice?
