How did you choose your main char?

No one seemed to play Gen, so I decided to play Gen.

I’ve always liked Vega since first being introduced to him via SFII but was too dumb to understand the game so by the time SFIV (yes I’m an 09’er derp) came out I went directly to Vega. Like his background story, his design, playstyle…he’s better in SFxT though.

When I first started, I had it in my head that I was destined to have a godlike Magneto. When that tanked I realized that I had more fun playing like a bitch with sent/cap, so I added cable.

in sf4, i just picked ken because he had the same haircut as sf3 ken. also ryu is a wet blanket

In every game I played, I’ve used quite a few characters and never felt perfectly happy with them (I loved T. Hawk until I realized that I hit a huge wall with him).

So recently, I rolled some dice. Seriously. I took 3 of my D&D dice (a d10, a percentile, and a d20). I rolled the d10 and percentile once for each character and sorted them from highest to lowest, that was their seeding. Then I put them in a double elimination bracket. I then took the d20 and rolled for each character in the match. High number won the round, each match was 2/3 rounds (except finals), like a fighting game tournament. Ended up with Balorog as the winner, so I guess I’m a boxer now.

Also got Ammy/Viper/Dante for MvC3, Guile/Poison for SFxT, Painwheel/Filia for Skillgirls, and Ken for ST. And if I ever buy SoulCalibur V, I’ll use Astaroth.

SFII - Ryu because he was the “main” character but then Fei Long because I love Bruce Lee
MK I & II - Scorpion and Baraka because they looked cool
SFIV - I started playing FG’s again after a long break and re-learned with Ryu but then switched to Cody because I like the character.

Mostly go for looks and if the character fits my playstyle I’ll keep learning him/her.

i chose ken sf2 because he had fire on his punch move ( whatever it’s called), and he is rich. He’s also AMERICAN!!!
Smoke in MK cause you know where there is smoke… there is fire. kof i play kyo and k’ cause k’ has da flying punch too, and kyo has fire punches. i play zero in mvc3 cause he’s so small and he has da fire flying sword move.

My main characters are Protoss, railgun, AK-47, counterspell deck, KQ, White, soccer ball, and violin. I picked them because my family recommended them for me.

I want to start learning Mario, oven, and Subaru sometime soon. They look pretty fun.

A long long time ago in a galaxy far away… there was a game called SF1… you could only pick Ryu.
However as a kid I didn’t have much money to play arcades back then… But a few years later SF2 came out,
it had Ryu in it… naturally curious about the character I saw in SF1 I started to play him.

because of tits.

try going to training mode with a list of characters you personally like, and whoever you like from training the most, is it

Character design, combos and type (Charge, etc) are how I decide characters. Lately I haven’t been interested in charge characters, as I always feel I am going to break the stick.

I chose my main Chunny just because I have fun using her when fighting. As for my sub I sometimes use Ken or Sakura if I feel like doing Shoryukens ohohoho!

I just pick up the characters that look cool and they usually end up being top tier.

When I first started playing SFIV, I used Blanka and Dhalsim 'cause I thought they were funny. Eventually, my friends taught me some of the basics, and recommended that I use Ryu while learning things like how to do a Shoryuken, Hadouken, Ultras, Focus Attacks, Throws, etc., because he is a well-rounded character. Eventually, I came to the realization that I hated doing DPs and Quarter-circles, so they recommended that I try a charge character.

I looked at the move list of each character and saw that Chun-Li’s was really big. Erroneously, I thought that this meant that she was hard to use and that there would be a large reward for learning her. (Editor’s note, this was not the case. Don’t be like me.)

I chose makoto because I found her cool in TS, the moveset looked really smooth and the Hayate was fun.

Just watched a bunch of games and Akuma and Ryu seemed interesting. Well-rounded, solid and positioning-based. Just how I like it.

Isn’t thinks the story of the century. Akuma has cool hair and he seems dark and edgy, my teenage self was all over him.

Well for me, I was looking up sf4 tutorials while learning stick. Came across Gootecks’ Balrog guide, which made Balrog seem pretty easy to learn.

Characters I thought were fun. Plain and simple lol.

I ended up experimenting a lot before settling on Guile. I knew I wanted a projectile (which didn’t stop some Fei Long experiments…those did not go well) and didn’t want a shoto, so I went back and forth between Juri and Guile before deciding I liked Guile’s strong suite of normals more. For me it was as much about knowing my own pitfalls as the characters themselves, as I knew that a character with strong normals would force me to focus more on the fundamentals as I was learning. I guess the biggest thing is you have to find the thing that motivates you and go with that.
