Hooking EVERYTHING up to a modern HDTV - A Guide (Update for the Framemeister coming soon!)

I prefer VGA it always seems to have the least processing with best picture

Hello Mr. First post.

I am thinking

Unless someone has a better alternative

The scaled I linked has 2 VGA put for about the same price.

thats what I have and love it you need an ac adapter 5v-12v I didn’t purchase one I ended up finding 2 different ones laying around the house its a pretty general round pin connector

Actually, now that I look at the links that’s EXACTLY what’s in the first post.

Although I might hold off until taxes are over. I already spent alot this month and I still got Christmas shopping to do.
Just doesn’t hurt to do your research ahead of time

Seriously, I went ahead and did all the legwork/asking. You don’t have to research a THING.

If that board doesn’t output audio make sure to buy the SCART cable that does. She has one with two RCA out. That’s what I’m using along with that stereo adapter I linked to earlier. That way I can easily swap a pair of PC speakers between the Genesis headphone jack and this.

Good deal. If one intended to use only a GBS, I’d go this route as a cheaper alternative to a Sync Strike (although not as nice). Also, this bit in the item description caught my eye:

Looks like the competition in the SLG market is heating up.

Yes, you can, but…

Not always true. As much as it is possible for a Composite video cable manufacturer to use good shielded 75 Ohm wire for Video AND Audio, it is more likely that only the Video is 75 Ohm and the audio is whatever. That being the case, you will have impedance mismatching using that cable for Component Video, which would lend to signal degradation (probably most noticeable @ higher resolutions).

In short, if you just want it to “work,” you are probably ok. If you want optimal performance, buy some decent Component cables. With the rise of digital formats, the cost of high quality analog cables has plummeted, so there is no excuse for using low quality analog cables these days

My money is on Toodles. That guy can make anything work out.

Its just a scanline circuit you can make for super cheap, and mount to the bottom or side of the scaler

Yeah I know there is often a difference of quality between different brands and the el-cheapo dollar store specials will give you terrible picture.

But if you grab the same brand RCA for example, 1 set is composite and the other is 1 set component. There all be the same except for those colored ends and the number of phono plugs you have. I also assuming the wring is the same for each lead.

Images are both from Cables-to-go brand video cables

But you are telling me the quality would be different, I guess that would be true for component cables if the wiring isn’t the same for all 3 lines
As in this picture the Yellow video co-axle cable appears thicker than all the others.

I also remember some audio cables do not use co-axle cables instead the wires are 2 straight leads alot like a lamp power cord.
Which you can get away for audio to a degree but noticeable drop in performance if the cables are used in videos.

Dude I thinking of getting these for my self, any one who dose not do there own research is [S]doomed[/S] deserves to fail if they do.

Your guide, as well as every other guide on this website (or any other) is just that a guide.
They are not chiseled into stone. You take what you need from a guide do some more research before going forwards. Its why some guides will refrance other guides or sources.
Even with the best intentions, guides can leave out details or get a fact or 2 wrong.

Everyone is ether going to look over some detail or someone will find a different procedure or method to get the same results. Even someone with an alot of creditability to there post like toodles or jdm or Markman, they still encourage people to check as many resources as needed in order to get all possible info.

I am way too OCD for “work” after going this far. That being said, I just hooked up a pair of component cables and could not observe any difference. I must have had decent composite cables. I am also at 240p on an SDTV.

I really must thank you for this perspective. I hadn’t thought about it that way and when I really think about it, a lot of my guide comes from other guides. I think I’ll write something in there to reflect this new perspective.

crediting your sources is always a good idea

When you’re right you’re right. I think I have most of them up. Just gotta add the people section.

Yeah, same article that inspired the new Toodles SLG. What I’m saying is that now we’ve got yet another person selling a pre-built one (potentially). I wonder if benaco and the shmups gang are going to trollolol her like they did Toodles.

I’ve never had a bad set of composite vs component. Of course, I always bought high quality composite as a few people in my family are DJ’s so I learned that the right cable changes everything. (I sound like the Michelin Man commercials, LOL) Anyway, it’s not much of a big deal even if cheap cables are used at high res.
