I recommend the opposite from that. You need to pressure Dee Jay and make him consider doing something besides the basic sonic boom trap. What Dee Jay wants to do in that fight is throw fireballs, see what you do and then anti-air properly. Jump strong beats slide, early neutral jump fierce beats Dee Jay jump fierce/rh, changing timing beats stand strong, etc. Honda is not going to win this battle very often simply because Dee Jay will be right way more than you will and from that point when I can completely pack it in on down-back, it’s pretty much over.

If Honda walks forward though, now Dee Jay has to consider jumping in order to stay out of the corner. If you get good at anti-airing the knee on reaction or at least trading in your favor it completely screws up the match. Personally, I’m 0 for life against Mike Ross because he’s very good at walking me down with hands pressure and then reacting to my crossups/knee shots with neutral jump fierce and s.fierce. At that point when Honda has the lead and Dee Jay is in the corner, the match is over, you get to react to what I do. I think this is the best way to play the matchup.

K, I’ve spent a good 30 minutes watching this video and having loud conversations with my self concerning this match up (primarily because I’m having problems with the match up to). I’d say your main problem was spacing. I’m not an expert, but I’ve been fighting pretty high level DJ’s lately (the dude I was fighting was the #1 ranked American on PSN, which, say what you will about PSN but when you have 5800pp you probably know what the hell you’re doing) and you really have to keep your distance or you’ll get picked about and jumped in on. And at that close of a distance, DJ’s fireball / slide strate will not fail. And DJ (as pretty evident in the video) has a very good answer to NJ F.ing those fireballs. And the only time I’ve seen jumping medium punch beat slide is when the slide is poorly spaced on DJ’s part. Even in that video, it was only beaten ONCE at the end of the first round when the dude got over-eager.

Keep to the ground at a safe distance (enough to block rolling sobat when you see it) get into the corner and smack him around by poking him with standing medium punch or fierce ALWAYS watching for the jump in’s. I suggest jumpback roundhouse or fierce or maybe medium punch. If for whatever reason he jumps out and you have the lifelead, lame it out. He can’t do anything but throw fireballs. Thats the best I’ve got on this one.
