Homosexual undertones of Street Fighter: The Movie

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has a “Hey Homo!” screening night downtown every wednesday or some shit. They showed Top Gun for one of their screenings. The movie is rife with homosexual undertones. Hell, I wouldn’t call them undertones.

Anyways, I’ve always wanted to make a movie to see the crazy ways people would interpret it. It would be like someone almost doing a character study of me from afar.

You know how I know you’re gay?

Brian: Naw, Pooks. How do you know?

Have you ever listened to Scott Sigler’s (all hail the FDO!!) Nocturnal?

Bookmarked for 2010 Awards. I don’t even know what category this would fall in, but it’s going to fall in somewhere.

I also move that everyone nominate this thread for an article. THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW.

Doesn’t get any better than this.

he doesn’t play SF4 anymore?

OP isn’t too shabby as far as armchair theoretical criticism goes.

Seriously.

Up next on the docket: superheroes.

I can’t believe not everyone thought this was classic

My guess is he was gonna do this for SF II V the anime series but decided that was way too easy.

His post wasn’t exactly enlightening, but that doesn’t mean his central thesis is incorrect. Street Fighter the Movie is in fact about two homosexual lovers struggling for dominance in a complicated relationship. Consider the following:

M. Bison: You have made me a very happy man.
Colonel William F. Guile: And next, I’ll make you a dead one.

This symbolizes the perpetual love-hate relationship between William and “Master” Bison, as they struggle to come to terms with their own sexuality. Notice how Bison’s position as the “Master” relegates Guile to the position as the slave, which of course inevitably leads to resentment. In Marxist literary theory, this is what’s known as class conflict. The bourgeoisie (in this case Bison) exploits and alienates the proletariat (William). This exploitation will only stop when the proletariat takes a stand and initiates a revolution. We see an example of that in the following scene:

Colonel William F. Guile: That bastard Bison! I know you like to look at yourself on television, you sick son of a bitch. So look at this!

The practice of “dirty talk” combined with videotaping one’s partner is fairly common in homosexual and even heterosexual relationships. By using vulgar and demeaning language one hopes to arouse their partner while simultaneously inspiring feelings of humiliation and subjugation. What is not made clear by the text is exactly what William wishes to show M. Bison. Whatever it is, William seems to believe it will firmly establish him as the dominant male in the relationship. Of course, this is still under the general guise of Marxist literary theory. If you look at psychoanalytic literary theory, you realize that the castration anxiety is a consistent theme throughout the film, as is the importance of the male orgasm. Take the following scenes for example:

Colonel William F. Guile: You hostages! If you can hear me, we’re coming! We’re coming! Charlie! Charlie, hang on, buddy! We’re coming! We’re coming! Hang on, buddy!

Dee Jay: Jamaica, here I come!
Victor Sagat: [appearing abruptly] Here WE come!

Bison: You will choke on those words, Guile.
Colonel William F. Guile: Anytime, dickhead. We’ll go worldwide, just like now.

A.N. Official: Colonel, have you lost your mind?
Colonel William F. Guile: No! You’ve lost your balls!

T. Hawk: Hey, stop! Stop! You don’t have a chance!
Cammy: Stop! Stop!
T. Hawk: What a screw-up!
Colonel William F. Guile: What a woman!

Ken: I’m sorry I talked you into this.
Ryu: I’m sorry I listened.

In conclusion, Street Fighter is a movie about passion, lust, and sex, but more importantly… it’s about love. I hope next time people watch this movie, they’ll approach it with an open mind, and then maybe they’ll realize that it’s a beautiful expression of homoerotic man-on-man action. And not, as so many simpletons put it, about “street fighting.”
