I think this is a really accurate assessment. GTFO assist, versatile DHC and passable on point as a last resort.

Its just weird that Ryu would have all these awesome powers in his first showing (TvC chains, Dash cancelable normals, special cancelable overhead, double jump) and then randomly and systematically strip them away for some random reason. The overhead thing has to be the stupidest, IMO. I mean, E supposedly counts as a special move, so Ryu should at least be able to do overhead>E>Air combo, but Capcom decided to make Ryu the one and only exception to the rule. I mean, Deadpool can do it easy. Ryu, though? Lol no.
I’m still liking Ryu despite all this. Aimable, superfast Shinkuu is still awesome.
He may be my AAA and third character slot if his SRK is -that- good.
Dash Cancellable normals and special cancelable overhead are the two things that he looks like he really needs for viable rushdown.

I am sold on using Ryu now just because of this move.

Ryu currently has the best AAA, and the best beam hyper in the game. He just doesn’t have much else (that’s outstanding- I know he’s decent, but by comparison he’s pretty poor outside of those two features.)
Frankly, if you already have two solid characters, Ryu is an excellent choice for most any team, especially if you don’t have a AAA already. I’ve yet to see a character who doesn’t benefit from SRK and Shinkuu.
Random note, you can combo into shinkuu tatsumaki off a sweep. I haven’t tried it myself but I’ve seen several players do it at the Food Fight Event in L.A.
Using Ryu through 3 TGS builds though, I really don’t like what they’ve done to him. His TvC chains are gone and he feels really clunky to me. A version of tatsumaki has some crossup potential if you do a regular hop over them and staggers on hit. Plus maybe it was just me but it seemed like in addition to Ryu’s good damage output, the hitstun on his moves seemed really good. And his tatsumaki assist seemed good enough since it became my preferred assist to use during my time with the game. He travels at a decent speed and if he catches them it’s a fairly easy to combo off of.
I still think Ryu was super bad though lol…

AAA means Anti-Air Assist.
From what I’ve seen, and keep in mind I haven’t touched this game since the Evo build but have been watching it all the way through SCR and this new CES build, His normals seem to do pretty good damage and he can combo into tatsu. His donkey kick still as some nice tricks too.
Dunno. Like I said, haven’t played it. But he doesn’t seem like… terrible. He seems fundamental heavy I guess.
