Right guys, may have noticed I popped up recently and started posting. The Cammy forums is a very nice place and I enjoy it here, but that’s not what this is about.

This is sort of like a hybrid, Newbie-Cammy problem so I felt i’d post it here because it’s sort of more fitting.

So i’ve been playing this game for a long time but only what i’d consider “properly” for the last few months. I bought this on a whim and haven’t really had any exposure to FGs for most of my gaming life. I’m primarily an FPS player atm, playing H3 competitively on EU ladders and stuff. But anyway…moving on.

So I started this and picked up Cammy, purely out of love for the character. Did the new to fighting game guides, learned basic inputs and stuff like that. Practised a few things on training mode, played Trial Mode to death to get better at execution stuff (though I seemed to lose sight of that eventually and went back to training) and played with a few friends who to be honest, are at a similar level with me so it wasn’t really anything special.

Anyway so I ventured to online eventually and started playing. I took my beatings and kept at it, struggling to get better and stuff. I calmed down eventually and stopped jumping in as much, tried to approach a bit wiser and poke a bit better.

The problem i’m at is that I don’t really know HOW to learn this game properly. I’ve read tonnes of stuff but I don’t really know where to go with it. In matches I seem to crack under pressure and get sucked into the other guy/gal’s high damaging shit then crossed up continually. I play around with a few basic things like:

St.HP xx HSA to punish and
Cr.HP, Cr.MK xx HSA for just other stuff (not great at the execution with this one. Also understand this doesn’t work on Juri and maybe some others?)

But in actual matches I barely get them down. I understand this comes with practise but I tend to spend more time getting beat down than managing to get these out.

I’m heading to a small local tourney next weekend, mainly for the casuals and to see if I can learn some things from people in person but, from you guys i’m just looking for suggestions on what to actually do to learn the game. Feel free to ask me to elaborate on parts, really looking for some decent BnBs to learn as well just to get me started.

So to recap or TL;DR:

Semi-new FG player
Need help learning Cammy

I maintain the best way to get better at anything is to do it. Play more online. Play till you hit a wall then start spending time in training mode or watching vids or cross training with other chars.

You don’t need to know everything going in and as a matter of fact there’s certain things you’re probably only going to get after you’ve made it to a certain level so it’s not necessary to go too hard on the analytical side early on.

It sounds like you did a fine job building a base to get better from but now it’s time to get real comfortable learning how the mind works when the pressure is on.

Combos I use are:

cr.lk > cr.lp > cr.MP > MK or Ex arrow
(hit confirming to a medium > arrow off cr.lk is awesome)

cr. lp(2x) > cr.mp > arrow
(a lot of times I like to mash out crouching jabs)

cr.lp > c.HP > HK arrow
(I like the wake up set up this gives me on a lot of characters but can be for advanced execution. You also have to take into consideration HK arrow is changing soon so it might not even be worth it to get used to this one at this point)

cr.HP > cr.mk > arrow
(For damage)

Watch replays of your matches and try think about what went wrong. Keep it simple, like “okay, I lost control here and stopped blocking altogether”. Try to put yourself in the other guy’s shoes.

Come up with SOME response to what you think he was doing. It doesn’t matter if it’s crap, because you won’t know if it’s crap until you try it out in a match.

lol more like play till you hit a srk.

but yeah I completely agree with m2thebrady, despite how frustrating online can be sometimes I think its a good tool for practice. personally I think it’s awesome for learning safe jump ins and defence.

It seems like you got the basics down for punishes and m2thebrady has already listed some bnbs. I think you should also keep hitting up training mode and try to figure out which combos you are consistant at at the moment. So during matches you can just use those, while trying some higher execution combos when you feel more confident.

BnB I use

c.lk>c.lp>s.lp>spiral arrow
(this one is muscle memory for me, but when I started it was a dead easy hit-confirm>knockdown)

c.lp>s.mp>c.lk>spiral arrow or c.lp>s.mp>c.mp>spiral arrow or c.lp>s.mp>c.mk>spiral arrow (left to right=easy-hard)
(I feel that these combos are a lot easier in AE and I like the positioning you get from landing the last two variations)

So back to learning safe jumps, I think online is awesome because there are a lot of nice mashers out there to practice on. Of course you have to score a knock down first but once you do you can start to get a feel for the timing (as well as distinguishing the timing between untechable and techable knockdowns)

so for example, after a back throw I usually take a step forward and press c.mp then jump in with a CS or a lk crossup. If the opponent tries to go for a reversal, if done right, it’l get stuff by my jump in or I’ll block it.

and lastly, practice that lame timing for dive kicks…every time I try a dive kick and a whiff lk or whtever comes out, I die a little inside.

lol yeah if it’s one thing playing online is good for, it’s practicing reversal safe wake up pressure. If you don’t learn it, you’re not winning online

Lots of helpful stuff guys  thanks a bunch. I’ll get to it right away

Also don’t be afraid to talk to your opponent at the tourney. Ask him what you fell for, and how he beat you. He might say he has a tricky set up that confuses lots of people or that you fell for basic baiting/punishes. Even ask him how do I beat what you did? Sometimes players run ‘easy mode’ characters to weed out no thought games, and maybe you fell right into it. A decent player will tell you how to beat that shit, after he just eliminated you.

I just want to say the best way to improve yourself is to look at your own replays from a neutral standpoint. Yeah I know, it seems obvious and boring, and no one ever does it but there is a massive difference between the way you think in a match and the way you think out of it. You’ll see about 20 different things you could have done in situations that made you seem trapped. Once you start realizing these things and applying it to your in-match mentality, you’ll notice a massive improvement.

Yeah you’re so right. I started to sit back and think about my rounds after a match I lose and see what happened. Starting to see where I get too excited instead of remaining calm and throwing games away. Being a bit more cautious with finishing out rounds now.

Will try asking the tourney yeah  I know a couple of guys going so shouldn’t be too awkward

Something new players ignore is the clock. You’ve got 99 seconds to play with so don’t feel like you need to bang rounds out as soon as possible. There’s plenty of time to hang back and collect yourself if you’re getting knocked around.

Been working on it hard, tried to take my time a bit more. Had some ok games today, I think the combos are slowly starting to appear in matches

I think we all came to this conclusion in AE about not getting better or not sure how to get better. When It happened to me, I just watched many videos/streams till I could apply that knowledge with my own. Eventually your going to be a full fledged cammy player. Just keep working on execution and look out for gimmicks

PS. when you lose 2-3 matches in a row. Sit back or go walk around your house and clear your head. It seems to do wonders for me.

Yeah I have a really bad head after a few losses :stuck_out_tongue: I usually take a breather and bounce around in training for a while.

Won some ok matches today too, though getting stuck in the corner seems to be my new major weakness. Lost a really tight game I should have won because I got corner stuck :\ What do you guys like to wake up with?

Just block… seriously, this is the most underrated and overlooked option on wake up. I see so many players that always gotta do some kind of reversal on wakeup. Good players have ways to force you to block, or eat either a huge combo or reset

Sometimes its not just about execution. Street Fighter is really a lot like chess and you really have to play against people to really get a feel of what to do until it becomes second nature. For instance a friend of mine was a training mode king with Rufus. Problem was he didn’t really know how to deal with cross ups and tick throws. Eventually after getting smacked for so long he realized that a random close light normal that was blocked could possibly lead to him getting thrown so he started crouch teching.

Yup, I agree. If I had to choose between training mode or just going at it in the arcades, I choose the latter. Back in the old days, you don’t even have training modes.

My suggestions is to always play someone who is just 1 level above you. Say out of 10 matches, you can only win 3-4 matches. This will force you to think on how to win because you can win. Don’t play with players that are so high above you that they can beat you while texting their BFFs nor with those who have completely no idea how to play.

Oh and last thing, to improve, don’t play online. Whether you win or lose, it doesn’t make sense at all.

So didn’t do too bad for my first. 16 people played and I finished in the upper half. Sent to Loser’s by a Blanka player, I let him in with balls WAY too many times and knew i’d beaten myself by the end of the first game :frowning: Faced a friend’s Cody in Losers who I beat out from experience of playing a million times then had a tight game 3 against a Chun Li who I kept giving health too with unsafe SA’s everywhere.

Was eliminated by a Dan player, think I wasn’t blocking too good and then didn’t take advantage of punishable misses.

Was an awesome experience though playing new people stuff  Hoping it’s helped me learn a few things
