We decide, because we have a conscience. If you decided all of a sudden to go and punch a little kid, your telling me you wouldn’t have second thoughts? Or go and cheat on your girlfriend or wife? The consequences wouldn’t bother you. No that isn’t left to chance, the only thing chance is left to is the things we can’t physically control. Ethics and morals are lessons that consciences uses to tell us what the consequences could be, not just things to live by. So your basically telling me you don’t have a conscience since you just do, which again states back to primitively since animals just do.

Your argument would be valid if chance was not the whole reason for our being and for who we are. All of our thoughts and perceptions of reality are caused by mere chemical reactions in the brain. We were molded with a certain “conscience” due to chance deciding when, where and how we were born. Chance is the origin of our WHOLE being. Our conscience is only one aspect of our being. EVERYTHING IS MEANINGLESS as one man puts it. We are just beings who sprung by mere chance and now are trying to put some type of meaning into all of it. And of course if I punched a kid I would have second thoughts, well I should say, would had if I did before my enlightenment. Those designs given to us by the flow of chance through the chapters of human existence, I no longer find useful so I throw em away. We all die. There is no “karma” or sht like that, just do. Again you are an animal yourself, so I dont know if you mean that to be an insult, but hey thanks I guess. Btw you also just do but in the confines of ULTIMATELY meaningless ethics and morality, while I strive to throw away those barriers and just do as well.
Not fighting back = because he is in a state of trauma and is also scarred to get hurt even further if he fought back.
