help us help you or go read the stickies or something its all there
here’s a tip. don’t play her. she fucking sucks in ssf4. I just saved you hours of time trying to learn FFF and feint mixups just to be flashkicked or shoryu’d for half your life. Or even cooler…command grabbed out of your thunder knuckle pokes.
You can thank me later.

What do you need help with?
i wanted to pick up viper but her thunder knuckle cancels always mess me up…its always random if it works…any way to make it less random and more intentional?
Don’t let yourself negative edge. Your tks will come out before you expect and then you won’t feint in time. then you’ll try to compensate by feinting earlier, but instead you get EX tk.
Took me a while to learn why it seemed random, but with Viper, more so than any other character in the game, you have to push your buttons and very deliberately let off the buttons asap.
For instance, if you try a c.fierce to fierce tk, even if you aren’t trying to neg edge, if you don’t make a conscious effort to tap the fierce button and let off as quick as possible, as you do the motion to cancel into fierce tk, due to ease of inputs and negative edge, it will you letting off the button as the input for fierce tk. You’ll then hit fierce when you reached the end of the qcb motion (thinking you were putting in the input for fierce tk but the game was already canceling into fierce tk via neg edge. Then you tap two punches trying to feint, but you don’t feint… you’re too late. you wasted too much time hitting the c.fierce you didn’t need but you thought you needed.
solution: Avoid negative edge screwing up your timing by making your button inputs very clean. As in, tap them when you want them and get the hell off as quickly as you can.
If this doesn’t make sense to you, try doing the following feint:
get next to the training dummy, and do:
c.lk xx fierce tk xx tk feint.
Watch how many times you get c.lk xx lk burn kick inadvertingly. It’s the negative edge.

ye one of my biggest problems is that i hold my buttons for to long and i get negative edge out…its really annoying , and i pull my fingers off the buttons really quick…and i can c.lk xx fierce tk xx tk feint without getting a lk burning kick out …im pretty good at that actually.
Right, and the problem with neg edge is due to the special cancel window. What I mean by that, for instance, is that c.fierce has a window that is so many frames wide (not sure how many) to finish inputting the special you want to cancel into. When you neg edge, you inadvertingly cancel sooner in that window than you intended. When you speed up your button presses and get your finger off fierce and then tap a clear second time after the qcf input, you cancel into fierce tk exactly when you want you… therefore the randomness is gone.
So, blackrayne, take notes.
Also, good job djv on being good at c.lk xx fierce tk xx tk feint. That took me a long time to get down well and I still screw up chains of 3 iterations sometimes and I’m weaker doing it on player one side than player two.
Maybe just a few more days in training…
She seems pretty low tier in most popular character match ups bc her low health and her 50/50 (I argue ssf4 is 50/50 guessing game, reversal shoryuken, ultras, el fuerte, blanka’s ultra, etc). But i would try to learn the FFF combos first. I hardly have opportunities to land them bc the start up. I would learn to zone with her and use those burning kicks properly, if you just go in rushing first, you will die in three combos. Knowing to use her seismo in combination with the burning kick. Learn her bread n butter combos, or her only combos.
If you are attempting to learn fff, I’ll tell I use negative edging bc it doesn’t require much inputs. You much cancel immediately! with jab and medium. Immediately! after the fierce tk of course. But when in doubt, feint. Learning to tk cancel, is pretty gimmicky to me. Don’t be flashing with her and you’ll do alright starting.
Also, properly doing a super jump is important. When I started, i couldn’t control it (could be the dam square gate). I remember how much force I put on the stick to get her to jump. it doesn’t take much energy to do one after you get used to it.
