This petition is for Capcom, they are the ones who hold the rights to the game. They can’t “just add it.”
if Capcom’s saying no, I think MLG should just take the hint.
though MLG is still in debt to some winnings.
Is MLG that thing that bans a load of stuff in the games they run and has online tournaments or am I thinking of something else?
FADC has pointed out before they’d be in a legal kerfuffle if they tried to charge money for SFIV footage, which is why they sell shirts and crap instead. Since MLG are sponsorship partners with Bungie and Microsoft, and beyond that are a corporate entity that doesn’t want to promote other for-profit stuff on their site, you can sort of see the issue with someone having paid membership LAN streams. (remember Sega not allowing VF footage on the Evo DVD…yeah)
I guess MLG is after the actual rights from Capcom to use the game because their streaming and tournaments are for-profit corporate broadcasts and events, whereas your average fighting game tournament is just trying to cover their costs and pay out.
make it 2
thats contract was not given to all pros, but for the guys who were kinda the face of mlg halo. i think its was like 1 million for the team, so 250 000 per player for the year.
i am not sure but i heard the lan site using game footage for profit is illegal and could be part of the reason they dont want to affiliated with it. this lan site is the first time i have see a crack down like this on mlg.
i think it would be good for the community as its another tournament and mlg usually helps to boost top players in the media.
oh shit… how do i remove my support?
Fighting games need their own league.
One thing wrong with many “pro” circuits and organizations is that the people that run them don’t usually give a damn about the games or the kids that play them, they do it for selfish reasons. Think arcade owners back in the day, where many didn’t even like games or nerds, they were just in it for a quick buck. Now, as these leagues grow and develop, they are less likely to be shady and become much more legitimate. Everyone points out that MLG fucked up Evo2k5, but that was 5 years ago and when the league was still very infantile. Much could have changed by now, you never know.
I bought this documentary (http://www.fragmovie.com/) at Quakecon 2008 and it has shed a lot of light on the subject of professional gaming and the people in charge of it. Think of it like IGotNext but about PC gaming. Unfortunately some organizations screw kids out of money and get them to sign terrible contracts that barely benefit them but they have no choice in the matter: they need that sponsorship to play and if they don’t sign the company will just move on to the next willing participant. And there’s no union or anything to really fight for the rights of the gamers if the company doesn’t pay up.
I feel split on the decision for SF4 at MLG, because both bad and good can come out of it. For one, I believe it would place more focus on people doing it more for the money than for the fun of it, which is never a good thing IMO. Second, I don’t want to see people get shitty deals or have anyone turned away from MLG or any other events. However, the FGC has had much more time to grow and mature compared to other genres, so I believe many of us would be able to make educated decisions and protect one another from bad leagues or organizations. Then, of course, more tournaments and more new players is always a good thing to any scene.
So while I am still skeptical about MLG involvement, we have to understand that WE are in charge of the community, not them or anyone else. MLG is such a dominating force in the Halo and Gears communities that it seems hard to distinguish what started what. Companies like Capcom, that are Japanese in origin, probably feel skeptical about a large organized league, especially an American one, that they wouldn’t be directly involved in. I mean, Evo is just one tournament really with just regional qualifiers to get into it, it’s more of a manifestation of the community. MLG is more like a business, so everything gets more complicated when it involves business. So the point is, I have faith in the community that even if SF4 did get onto MLG pro circuit and people do start signing contracts, we would at least have the balls to not let them take advantage of us and stand up for our peers.
Yup. That’s them.
You’d have to splay me open and devour my entrails before I’d even consider playing side-by-side with Counterstrike players.
3 pages and still no one can explain what exactly happened there?
MLG partnered with Evo for Evo 2005…and left without paying the prize monies to the winners of that year.
I don’t see why we need this. Most of the people who want to play competitively have their own tournaments and whatnot to go to anyway. Why do we need MLG?
Signed. If you truly love street fighter, even just a little bit, now is the time to take a stand for it and help the community out.
@ Shiawase: Because we’re tired of the same old Halo MLG being shown on TV, and just the same stuff over and over again. Seriously, like Mike Ross said, I don’t care about kids memorizing words out of a dictionary, let’s get rid of the Spelling Bee, already. Get some mainstream exposure for this!
Oh, and signed.

i don’t trust police, wikipedia, and mlg.
still have my evo 2k5 shirt…
And, on top of stiffing people on their money, I also heard that they were irresponsible during the setup/teardown.
I dont think it’d be a good idea to have Fighting Games become an E-sport and all the problems that comes with it.
