But seriously though, WTF?
It is nice to see that the YT comment about there being only two GG players in Hawaii has stirred up some interest/discussion to say the least from the ‘other’ GG players here. Hell, if it took a comment like that to light a fire under your ass for some GG related hype talk, what does that say about the current state of the GG scene here in Hawaii? Leading up to EVO 09 there was barely much talk about any GG stuffs, but it’s only after EVO 09 is said and done that there is some sort of backlash related to the YT comment about there being only two 808 GG players who showed up to play the game at EVO. If you were to also include the sisters, the number of 808 GG players is bumped up to a total of four, although they don’t live here anymore cause they moved to Arizona they are still known as the girls from Hawaii. In the end though, Bears and myself went to EVO 09 as GG players from Hawaii. What say you?
I think the YT comment was taken out of context and was supposed to reflect that there were only two ‘active’ 808 GG players that are still playing the game at the time. You would probably take offense to that downplayed version as well. What were we supposed to tell people when they asked about 808’s GG scene while we were at EVO 09? That there is barely a scene in the 808 much less players and interest in GG? That there were some players that were supposed to come to EVO but didn’t? That people are pretty much doing their own thing when it comes to GG? Despite whatever could be said as a response what it comes down to is that Bears and myself were present as the only two guys to fly out from Hawaii for EVO 09 to play GGAC. We were repping ourselves primarily as individuals for the most part and not you guys, though in a way repping 808 was a secondary effect. Things would probably be different if you guys were there to rep yourselves but to my knowledge you weren’t, so whatever.
Activity for GG is hella limited because only a small amount of people actually play the game and are interested in it. The last few times I played any GG comp on Oahu were at the three HVGL events I attended in the latter part of the first half of 08. And even then the amount of comp started to drop off a bit and by the time June 08 rolled around only Bears and myself played GG at the HBB event, lol. I don’t know how you guys felt about playing GG at that point in time in 08. Maybe your interest level in GG dropped off a bit and you didn’t want to play, or maybe the HVGL event locations and time were inconvenient for you, or maybe it had something to do with me even. Who knows? It’s a bit hard to keep active in a scene when there really aren’t many people playing GG at all much less communicating and keeping oneself interested in continuing to play regardless of what is going on as far as the scene is concerned.
Fast forward to EVO 09 where GGAC is back in the main game line up as a singles tournament along with the likelihood of a side event team tournament as well. Add along the possibility that this year is likely to be the last year for the game in the tournament because of the advent of new games that just had/or are soon to have a console release in time for next year’s EVO, is that not enough reason to go and play a game you like or liked at one point in time? If anything, wouldn’t you at least want to see where you stand as a player amidst the rest of the US player base? I was like “Fuck it, I’m going to EVO.” Bears said he would go as well which was awesome. The sisters said they would be in attendance too. What resulted with GGAC at EVO 09 was some pretty hype shit in both the singles and teams tournaments as well as in casuals that took place in the same area after singles was over, in the BYOC area, and also in various hotel rooms throughout EVO weekend.
As an individual player in the FG community, I think you have to make choices based on the game(s) you choose to play, the current state of the game’s competitive scene based on what level you are able to play at (local, statewide, regional, national, international, online/netplay), and what you personally want out of your gaming experience. Shit, I have to fly out from my island to in order to play some comp because there’s no local scene for the games I play due to lack of interest. It’s crazy I know, lol.
The main thing is though that Bears and I both chose to go up to EVO 09 and play GGAC there. That’s two people from Hawaii out of supposedly how many GG players? Who knows how many people actually still play GG in Hawaii? So far there are two people that are seemingly butthurt about the YT comment so that could bump up the total number of GG players in Hawaii currently to a possible total of four, maybe. I mean it’s hard to believe that there were only two 808 GG players at EVO but that was the case. Maybe you guys don’t care about that part but more about the possible misrepresented number of actual 808 GG players. But since only two 808 GG players showed up for EVO 09 does that mean there are currently only two people that play GG in Hawaii?
It’s quite possible because…I don’t think there were any other GG players from Hawaii that went to EVO 09 to play GGAC besides Bears and myself.
If these ‘other’ GG players had gone up to EVO to rep as GG 808 players maybe our collective attendance would’ve meant something, like possibly stating that Hawaii must have a GG scene if there are players present here. Oh wait, Hawaii doesn’t really have a GG scene right now just some GG players that are doing their own thing. Yet only two of those players actually went to EVO to play GG. That alone speaks volumes right there. Two players that actually give a fuck about GG end up going to EVO to play that game. So I take it that you guys don’t care enough about GG anymore otherwise you would’ve gone to EVO as well, that or you guys are on a hiatus from playing GG or something right?
Either you are continuing to play GG in some sort of capacity or you’ve chosen to drop GG and focus on playing another FG instead. So can you really say that you guys still play GG here in Hawaii and not even go to EVO to rep yourselves and state that there are possibly more than two people from Hawaii that play GG? As it stands right now, Bears and myself were the only two GG players from Hawaii that went to EVO 09 to play in the GGAC singles tournament. Maybe next time you guys can show up and make it a total of four GG players from Hawaii, if there is a next time. Or not though, it’s up to you guys if you choose to participate or whatever. I don’t give a fuck, lol.
