Has the Soul Calibur series fallen from grace?

I find it funny, most of the people hating on Soul are 09 people. Theres depth to fighting games that aren’t Street Fighter.

The Soul Calibur series is fun, though it may not have quite the staying power as other franchises.

At first the series was a good bit innovative. Beginning with Soul Blade for the PSOne and finalizing its particular style with Soul Calibur for DC, It did for Weapons-based 3D fighters, what Samurai Shodown did for 2D weapon fighters at the time.

However, i think the formula may be “maturing” now, or whatever you want to call it.

Plus the last two games appeared a bit on the lazyside. SC1 & SC2 were fantastic, whereas SC3 & SC4 just seemed to coast along with the momentum from the first set and gameplay mechanics weren’t as “sharp”(no pun intended) as before.

Heck, the overall presentation with storylines, characters, cinematics, etc. Just was NOT as good on the last two either IMO.

That Hong Kong video was pretty good stuff. I think my favorite part was the Santa Claus Rock player.

I’m not on 8wayrun, but was on CaliburForum for quite some time, under the same username, AuhsojSivart.

Also, here is an example of a combo from SCIV - Ivy, while in CL stance, and only as a counter hit, also shakeable (lol, no depth in the game at all, right?)

33A, 214**, SE 4B+K, CL 4B+K, SW 214K (78)

And one from SFIV - Sakura’s challenge mode (Hard 5) [in number notation]

5HPxx214LK, 2HPxx214KK, 214214KKK

Can’t see how that’s any more difficult to do than anything in Soul Calibur. I’m not saying it’s definitely easier, just that it’s not a million times more complicated.

And, just for fun - MvC2 combos (which kinda make Soul Calibur and Street Fighter combos look like child’s play)

in the lord of the rings/star wars argument… SC will always be lord of the rings to street fighter being star wars … it came later, beggingly attempted to appeal to the masses, and has blatant homo-erotic elements.

Hey a Cedric post on SRK!

I’ve just gotten this vibe of hype kinda dying down, at least from my friends in the midwest and EC. Heard some stuff about nationals being fucked up somehow (beyond the online qualifiers, I don’t know how specifically), and it seems like overall turnouts have really dropped since last year.

Sup Josh.

Maybe it’s different on the east coast, but here we’re pretty excited. Nationals isn’t really fucked up, people just seem to really like to make a big deal about problems. DFG has been pretty good about changing nationals to fit with player needs, the only problem is that the whole ‘ban everything’ movement was going on back when nationals were being planned out. They had to make a judgement call and they chose to go the banning route… which really sucks but it’s been known about for a long time as you know.

Evo being a week before Nats doesn’t really help anything, but I’m looking forward to it all.

SC definitely took a dive in 2, then ruined the series in 3 console. For all the time I invested in SC, it’s the greatest betrayal for me in fighting games. A good analogy would be Street Fighter ST coming out, then the whole SF franchise gets turned into a Smash Bros clone for good-- it would still work as a fighting game, but it would be the ultimate burn for SF experts and enthusiasts.

Anyway, no matter how much better SC4 supposedly is, I’ll never take that franchise seriously again. I’m not going to bother studying and attempting to master it, after it shifted priorities to attract a casual crowd.

This is what its all about.

I eagerly wait the day when people actually play SCI and see what they’ve been missing. I note almost all the people that say SC4 is best thing EVA or ride it have NEVER played SCI (or even II) or played it enough outside of casual sessions.

The game is a joke now. I don’t even want to consider SCIII and SCIV “Soul Calibur” anymore.

Like I said, it wouldn’t matter if the series started out sucking like that, but it was clearly so much more respectable so it makes it all the more painful to see.

Soul Calibur: The tale of money and swords, casually retold…and the greed still burns

SC2 probably is one of the top3 fighting games i have ever played. I personally think it’ s one of the most balanced fighters, i hardly touched SC1 but Sc is fun at a casual level. I was unsure about buying SC4 because i heard the net code was shit and i thought it would have small tournament presence.

even though i like sc2 over 1 i totally agree with this statement… also, sc 1 was still an awesome game. 4 is like playing a 2d fighter…

-dime

Yeah with myself or my girlfriend or your mom. Same shit…either way.

Soul Calibur = Pure Shit.

only 3D fighting franchise worth discussing or playing is TEKKEN.

End of discussion.

And dont reply with VIRTUA FIGHTER , BLAH BLAH…once again…TEKKEN was the only franchise to do it right all the way through.

DOA also goes into my list of games that are pure garbage.

Now tell us your thoughts about Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat…oh boy.

Alright…MK3…fun game.

Fast combos , interesting fatality’s but…in the land of 2D fighting I am going to have to put this in the " Not Worthy " pile.

Dont get me wrong. I have alot of love for the MK series , its stayed true to its completely ignorant bloody claim to fame but still…for me it just doesn’t make the cut.

Oh Also when the MK series went 3D that was just embarrassing.

For the Record I back Killer Instinct but only the original version.

How is playing 4 even remotely close to a 2d fighter? Step in this game is still extremely good, it just isn’t the godly thing it was in sc2 (step guard, the super turtle game). I hear things like this but it seems to be mostly from people who only played it for a short amount of time casually, then they complain it isn’t like ‘the best soul caliburs of the past’ (I’m not even a huge fan of 2, the system was great in some ways but it was extremely defensive).

Sure sc4 isn’t perfect, but it’s a pretty damn good start and has been successful. It just seems like because of sc3 everyone wants to jump to conclusions and hate on the game.

Sc2 is kinda like marvel, it was broken but every character could potenially win. It was just so much easier to win with characters like X.(not the case in marvel)

The game wasn’t all that trutly either considering how good step was in 2. It kinda just worked. Also it’s the most popular of the series because it was the very 1st pretty 3d fighter on console and arcade. There wasn’t a thing hitting on sc2 when it was released for dreamcast, as far as fighters go.

The 3 came along and it was poo, and 4 is more simiar to 3 than 2. And the move list changes yet again.

Anyway the main reason people go back to sc2 is because it was a gem in it’s time. It has since just been ok. The most cool things about the game have been the bonus characters

SC series was never grace … it was just a good side game to take up time when i was waiting to get back on 3rd strike… Tekken is the same way, i like tekken, but its still a side game from sf4.

SC was pretty epic, it went downhill after that…
I had small hope for IV, the only reason (for me) was playing Darth Vader looking back afterwards… I dunno, the presentation was good etc. but it didn’t feel like it was back in the DC days…

Now Namco turns to a God to save their franchise…
Is Kratos up to this epic task?

I think Tekken is my all time favorite series. I cannot wait for 6.

SC was always one of my favorites, and I was really into 2, but it just seemed to die off after that so I never really invested anything into it. Now I hear 4 is all lame and everything, which is disappointing because I am still thinking of buying it. I never did because the big screen in the house is broken so I figured it would not be worth it. The screen is overly blue, lame :stuck_out_tongue:

SC4 sold a crap load of games, I don’t think they need anything to save their franchise on the part of making money…

Also you hear 4 is lame, from who exactly? 4 has a good competitive scene and again as I’ve been saying, a good tournament scene. The game is fairly balanced with a few characters that fall out of that spectrum (even then, the highest tier characters aren’t the ones dominating the entire tournament scene.) Try it out for yourself, you might end up liking it. Just try to drop the bias that comes with people complaining about the series because it isn’t SC1/SC2 and you will have a good time

Also Darth Vader is fun to play
