@Serpent - This is one of those moments where I guess you’re being serious or, at least, more serious than usual so that I can actually tell.
Yes, I have a copy of Mein Kampf actually. No, I haven’t read most of it; I forget how much I read before I got invariably distracted by something. I think I’ll start it back up now that I’m not reading anything at present, having finished that Auschwitz book.
My calling Mein Kampf delusional has less to do with the legitimate problems that the Weimar Republic was going through, especially after the way WWI ended with its Treaty of Versailles basically paving the way for WWII by fucking over Germany hard, and more to do with Hitler’s self-importance of both the “Aryan” race and himself. I’m obviously not dismissing it entirely because then I wouldn’t bother reading it all, much less bother having a copy, but that egomaniac aspect was what I was getting at: Mein Kampf’s delusions of grandeur and victim-blaming are bullshit even if some of problems that he points out, such as on an economic level, were actually legitimate; some of them invariably were, just not the ones that were “the Jews did such and such, like being the reason we lost WWI, so we should totally deport or kill them.”
Delusions of grandeur, victim-blaming (or more like everyone-else-blaming in this guy’s case) and being racist are rather parallels that Adolf had with this nutjob, who doesn’t deserve attention at all to his “manifesto”, especially now that we no longer actually have to deal with his egomania. Mein Kampf would and will be interesting to read from a historical perspective given its historical impact whereas this guy’s manifesto won’t even make it into any footnote in history that isn’t directly related to how fucked up gun violence is in America. He and it will be forgotten about and ignored like pretty much every gun violence incident that isn’t Columbine in the space of a month at most, save for on anniversaries.
After all, it’s not like anything is going to change from this. If nothing changed after the fucking Sandy Hook shooting, where a bunch of prepubescent, white children got slaughtered, then absolutely nothing is going to change from this save for some more people’s lives being ruined or ended by gun violence. As such, history will repeat itself unfortunately whether his “manifesto” gets read or not; hell, history may repeat itself quicker because his “manifesto” and his videos are getting such unwarranted attention.
I mean, I’d be down for reading this guy’s manifesto/autobiography if there was anything to actually learn, but people are mostly reading for either a) laughs or b) trying to “understand” why this happens, even though they always ask that after a mass-shooting and no one ever really seem to learn or care to learn or do anything about it if they have gleaned anything. The cause always invariably gets blamed something that has absolutely nothing to with shit like video games or being a “loner” or whatever. That or it’s chalked up to being an individual-based thing or both. I’m all for knowing your enemies–I’m with you on the Bible front–and such, but this prick is thankfully already dead (finally), so it’s also pointless on that front; it’s just a shame he didn’t kill himself sooner. So I’ll pass on being someone else to give him needless attention.
Getting back to Mein Kampf, the translation thing basically depends on the translator of that particular edition. I’m not sure about it either, but I vaguely recall being told years ago that the translation I have was one of the better ones. It’s translated by Ralph Manheim under Houghton Mifflin’s publishing, so you can try looking at/for that one if you wish. Don’t blame me if you’re disappointed one way or the other, though I doubt you will be, especially if you don’t know German.
