Remember when blacks were considered inferior athletes? Babe Ruth got to hit all those home runs without having to face non-white competition. If blacks were so stupid and inferior during the time they were enslaved, then why would anyone have needed laws which made teaching them how to read illegal? Can a mule learn to appreciate and read Plutarch or Shakespeare? And, if they could be taught to read, and to learn, then why were they made perpetual slaves in the first place? Truth is, If China had taken gunpowder to its logical conclusion, and had needed goods and materials from other places, we all might be Chinese slaves right now. Coincidentally, that still might happen.

I’d wager slave owners not wanting blacks to learn how to read is due in part to not treating them like actual people, not because they feared their intelligence.

And what standard did they use for not treating them like actual people? If intelligence level, education level and or bad behavior were not reasons for enslaving them, since there were almost certainly unintelligent, uneducated, ill-tempered white people during that time, then what other criteria is left? Surely, the founders were aware that whites were just as capable of committing serious crimes as anyone else. We know this to be true since laws against all manner of crimes were part of English society (like any other society) long before they started enslaving Africans.
So if they didn’t enslave them because they were unintelligent, uneducated, or more prone to violence or lawlessness, then what other reason could there have possibly been? hmmm…If white people and black people can both be dumb, uneducated, and murderous, I wonder what else is left that makes them different…hmmm.
