Thing is, capcom are aiming for true balance in AE (think of project street fighter four as project street fighter balanced edition).
Fireball characters by virtue of having a fireball have a clear and distinct advantage over those that don’t (even though the entire cast bar one [makoto] has at least one special move DESIGNED to let them through fbs…). So the only way for a complete 5-5 character match up tier list is to nerf the crap out of fireballs. I think that’s why Daigo said FB characters were worse off in AE.
Guile’s match ups revolve around his two (or is that one) special moves…they were designed to stop him getting ass raped (see vanilla for more details). But as we all know FK doesn’t work properly, so he’s left with SB. The meter nerf means they want Guile to get up close to his opponent, thus making it easier for them to get a hit on him (i.e even up the match a little).
But, Guile is not a rushdown character; his X-up is bad, his overhead is even on hit, his damage is low, super/ultra requires down-back charge —> all these are not rushdown qualities (because Guile was never designed for that purpose). So this means you need to play smart; you can’t powerhouse your way through but at the same time if you want meter (which looks to be very important in AE) you can’t sit in the corner all day firing sonic booms.
But, even with the nerf bat smashed against Guile’s head, the word from the Top Guile’s so far is that he’s still playable. So it may look bad from all these posts and the announced nerfs, but in AE if you are good with guile, you are good with guile. He’s not vanilla guile:** you won’t get punished because your moves don’t work**.

Is this counter hit on recovery thing true for all projectile chars? Would suck if it was only Guile and DeeJay. I’ve only played one night and almost no one used a fb char, and I haven’t been able to watch vids since that night either.
^ There was a video posted earlier where Ryu EX fireballs through a boom for CH(where it normally wouldn’t have), but the same didn’t apply when Guile EX boom’d through a hadouken a few seconds later.
I know what you mean Pakman. Guile can be played as a rush down but it doesn’t mean he excels at it. He only has a few fair tools in order to be played that way but after that, they can tell what you’re going to do next. But Guile has no reversal, no comeback, no get out of jail free card without first having charge and finding the right time to use it. Because if you use it in a block string that they didn’t screw up, you’ve got to hold down back again and wait all over again. Guile has to be played almost perfectly because just one or two screw ups and you’re in a bad situation with many characters. Yun does not look friendly. That’s all I’m saying. I mean, Rufus was scary at one point. Now give his moves to a smaller character with more options. I can’t take uphill battles anymore. I feel good when I out think and outplay my opponent but I hate the super-happy-fun-time-cross-up-super-party-for-everyone-other-than-guile-special-all-you-can-eat-buffet-extravaganza-banzai that’s going to come. Can’t there be something that they gave Guile to make it a little more bearable? I’m not asking for a win button, just something to make at least the combos more manageable.
Yeah, I think that’s what I’m going to call it…super happy fun time cross up party.
Speaking of cross ups. I had this Guy player doing super happy fun time cross up stuff to me last night, so it was a good chance to test out if capcom fixed Guile’s autocorrect FK.
It still sucks. Seems like they didnt fix his turn around animation, so FK still goes the wrong way.
Anyone think this systemic nerfing of fireball chars is Ono’s way of prepping players for his Street Fighter x Tekken crap, in which fireballs have to be negated to let the other side have a chance?
If they removed some of his 1 frame links, that might help (they don’t reward him huge damage anyway and in no way would it break him). As a matter of fact, there’s no reason why Guile should have ANY 1 framers; it’s just a needless execution barrier (in the same game that rewards sloppy technique…)
Some of the nerfs I can actually see justifications for (they fit towards overall balance equation/5-5 match ups) but the U2 nerf is a giant F you to any Guile player that dares use his workable ultra. Frame and damage nerf…yeah thanks a lot capcom.
Still, I will continue to main him regardless. And who knows, maybe there’s a hidden buff somewhere that noone has picked up on (In Super, everyone forgot to mention Guile’s cr. mk suddenly being awesome). Maybe shades gives him a damage boost!
Really? I haven’t noticed any difference between Vallina cr.MK and Super’s. On a side note, Makoto has gotten a lot stronger thanks to the buff to her AA.
iirc it got a hitbox buff. Unless I’m thinking of a different move. W/e point was he did get some buffs that went under the radar, so I’m hoping something similar happened in AE.
Let’s be optimistic. Once everyone knows about Guile taking beefy CH damage if they predict a sonic-boom properly, doesn’t this change actually have a side-effect of increasing the mind-game factor a little? People are going to have more incentive to hit us through sonic-booms so they might be a little easier to bait into doing something punishable like a tatsu or EX-Neckbreaker. If we get hit during SB recovery it means we really shouldn’t have thrown it in the first place right? Right?!
One of these random videos showed this situation. It was poor quality video, but it didn’t look like Guile takes counter hit damage on an U2 trade. It made me lol
I played some guile yesterday at CTF…Man I think his days of being top tier are far far behind him. I cried on the inside after i saw the SH damage. And FADC SH damage. I will miss the good old days of super. Also Yun rapes guile so bad…He palms SBs all day and builds meter so fast off it. I need to learn that match up. Zoning does not Work on him lol. Since guile builds bar so slow off SBs…The more i talk about it the more it makes me sad…Imma go cry now…I hope when i sleep tonight i have a dream about SSFIV AE guile playing like SF2 guile. I want flash kick to hit crossupers even though i am not facing him. I want Flash kick to rape any air moves like the old day…I want god like status of SF2 cHP…We can only dream…
That’s what im saying…give SOMETHING back. I mean i really don’t care that i have to get up close and personal with a zoning character, just atleast give Guile the tools to do so successfully is all.
